Should I buy it!!? (Samsung 55")

I've come accross a reasonable price for the new Samsung 55" 7000 3DTV, but I can't decide whether or not to pull the trigger. Here's my situation - any and all advice is welcomed.

I have a "3D-ready" 73" Mits DLP, for which I will either (a) replace with a 3DTV of equivalent size or (b) "upgrade" with the 3D kit whenever it comes out.

Since I'm not willing to replace the 73" with a 55", the 55" would probably go into a secondary room and I'd probably also have to buy a new receiver + surround sound set-up for that room.

Still, I'm tempted to get the 55" because of:
(a) the reasonable price I found
(b) have a "full 3D" set-up until I replace the 73"
(c) use the 2D-3D feature to get by until more 3D content is readily available

Side factors - I have the wife's stamp of approval and the kids are begging for it (although that would require several more pairs of glasses).

What should I do!?

Life is short. Even with the Mitsu you still won't have full HD, if that is important. Truthfully though make sure you see a Panasonic plasma before you pull the trigger as for many of us once we saw the Panny nothing else on the market yet compares. (If the presently "available" 50 inch isn't big enough and you want one equally sized, there should be a 54 inch version of the Panasonic out soon as Best Buy already has a skew number for it. Of course by late summer the 58 and 65 inchers from Panasonic will be out and there will be offerings from Sony, LG, Vizeo and Toshiba (which will have the 2D to 3D feature like the Samsung.) Wait till the end of the year and Sharp will have yet another choice with supposedly superior color (adds yellow) and absence of ghosting technology that apparently is the achilles heel of the LCDs.

Thanks for the reply. A couple thoughts:

One of the reasons I'm so tempted to by this NOW is because of the price I found, and I'm not sure how long that's sticking around. For the price of the Panasonic a BB.com, I can get the Samsung, the 3D Bluray player, and the kit.

Since it's going to be for a secondary room anyway, I'm looking more for "value" than it being "the best." Although, I haven't seen the Panasonic (my local BB isn't a Magnolia store), I've been impressed with the Samsung. What makes the Panasonic stand out?

Also, since the Samsung has the 2D-3D conversion, it can give me at least a "fix" until more real 3D is available (which adds value). Plus, it at least comes with one movie and two pairs of glasses (which also adds value).

Finally, I desperately want to see the World Cup in 3D, so I want to have a 3D viewing option by then (value).

and some follow-up questions:

1. Is the Panasonic exclusive to BB/Magnolia?

2. Can anyone point to the differences between the 7000 and 8000 series Samsungs?

I read somewhere as well as the guy at HHgregg told me that yes, for now BB/Magnolia has a lock on the new Panasonic. Some special deal.

You should be keeping up with the thread in the LCD forums, like the one titled something like official samsung 7000, 8000 owners thread. But the main difference is the 8000 has the silver/titanium frame and precision dimming.

I thought the problem of 3-D plan is very few BD titles but it's worth trying out.

I too have a 73" Mitsubishi. I don't want to downsize much either. I will wait to see the new LG and Vizio 72" screens coming out later this year. Panasonic announced prices today on their new models.

"Perhaps Panasonic is releasing pricing information early so you have time to save your pennies. The 50-inch TC-P50VT25 will list for $2,599.95, the 54-inch TC-P54VT25 for $2,999.95, the 58-inch TC-P58VT25 for $3,399.95, and the 65-inch TC-P65VT25 for $4,299.95."

Interesting situation there. The wife approves, the kids are excited, and the price is right. New toys are hard to pass up. I take it you don't want to use the 3d feature on your 73" Mitsu DLP. I can tell you from first hand experience the 3d feature on the DLP rear pros looks absolutely fantastic. However if you got the money, why not? If the 2d to 3d conversion is good, I have no doubt you will get your moneys worth out of it even if there aren't alot of 3d discs out there. I have 3d blu ray on my 67" Samsung and I can definately say the effect is much more compelling on a bigger screen. The DLPs can't display 1080p per eye but I can't see the difference if there is any. So do what you gotta do but give your Mitsu a shot at the title when you get a chance, it can do 3d just as well.

Cheers

My vote is get three of them.

I agree with joel here I also have a mitsu rptv (wd-60737) I think it looks incredible as well. I have seen the samsung 55" led backlit 3dtv and I honestly think my 60" dlp looks better(haven't seen any panny's yet). I also see the mention of the extra color (yellow) use with the sharp. My Dmitsu has 6 color and I was wondering if that may have something to do with why I think it looks better even with the lesser res?(unsure? any thoughts anyone?)
Anyways my point here being I am way more pleased with a 60" 3D DLP RPTV at $1000 then a 55" samsung LED backlit 3dtv I saw at best buy. Seriously trying to be not biased because I own the mitsu. I actually expected the samsung to have looked better due to price but was surprised to see I was wrong and that my $2000 cheaper tv looked better. Could it just be that I have control over my own environment (Lights, sound, more cozy couch) maybe but I don't think so. If its about it being flat and wall hangable the samsung definitely wins. But if you haven't done 3d with the mitsu and are expecting less from it, try it out first and then decide. I think you will save even more (don't know how unbelievable deal you speak of either on the samsung so???????).

are you talking about the 7000 plasma or led?

I definitely plan to try out the Mits for 3DHD viewing, and I very much hope it performs well enough to warrant using it (as opposed to replacing it).

However, it won't solve the problem of:

1. viewing the World Cup in 3D (at least without the adaptor that may not be out in time).

2. converting 2D-3D, which gives me a bit more content (more use of the 3D feature) until more "true" 3D is available.

PS - I'm talking about the LED and if you want to see the price for yourself, just check out Amazon (you can only see the price at checkout).

I am beyond curious now...What is the special deal you are getting? How much? I got the tv, the blu ray player, the starter pack (movie and 2 pair of glasses) and four year square trade warranty for 3200, shipped and no tax. Here's something really sweet I'll bet you didn't know: Once you register your tv at samsung.com they will send you a survery. Complete it and you'll score yourself a free pair of glasses!

An extra pair of glasses?? That's definitely worth a survey!!

The deal is the 55" LED C7000 + C6900 3D Bluray player + 3D Starter kit (free shipping, no tax, 24 months no interest with Amazon.com store card) for $600 less than what you paid. This doesn't include an extended warranty, though.

New twist!! Just saw the 58" Samsung C8000 plasma for $400 more than the 55" C7000 LED.

What should I do now!??!?!

depends if you like plasma.

leds have:
uniformity issues
off angle viewing issues

Plasmas have:
Horizontal Banding issues
Image retention issues

Both sets are great, just have to pick your flaws

My bad, I forgot I also bought two extra pair of glasses and the extended warranty. My total was 2670 for the tv, the starter kit and the blu ray player. The warranty was another 233 for four years. I want to see the price fall much further. I feel like the tv needs to compete for the LED market out there and needs to be closer in price. People will spend a bit more for the 3D feature but with only 2 pair of glasses and one movie they probably know they will have to shell out more cash. I am very very happy with my set and the LED is amazing. Buy it! I might have considered the plasma but thought it might be too heavy to hang on the wall?

So, I went to BB yesterday to try to judge the LED vs. Plasma first hand. Obviously, it's not the ideal circumstances to make this kind of comparison, but it's what I had to work with.

I thought the LED provided a SIGNIFICANTLY brighter, crisper, more attractive picture. In my head, I kept telling myself it's being skewed by the bright lighting in the store, but in the end, I've got to go with what my eyes tell me.

Occipital lobe beats frontal lobe for this one.

Anyway, I pulled the trigger last night on the UN55C8000 from Amazon (which had dropped in price). I hope I made the right decision, especially since the C7000 has gone back up in price (+$700) as of this morning, which is actually $200 more than the C8000 at this point!

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to play with it very much.

My glasses (from the 3D Kit) just came in on Thursday. From my VERY limited viewing to this point, I'll say the following:

The 2D-3D conversion is a MUST HAVE. It made a BIG difference watching the Celtics vs. Cavs game on ESPN-HD.

I also thought it did a good job with Avatar, though I only watched the "first flight" scene.

I definitely need to tweak some settings and I haven't done any firmware upgrades, but so far, so good.

Edit: Also, I just registered the TV at Samsung.com - when and how do I get the survey for the free glasses??
