I'm dealing with overscan problems that make my HTPC useless. I bought an NVIDIA card thinking nvidia-settings would allow me to adjust overscan, but for some reason the overscan compensation slider does not appear in my nvidia-settings. I'm trying to hack a solution by using the "-vf expand" filter of mplayer, so that mplayer puts a black border around the whole video image. I have heard of people using this video filter before, but whenever I tried it, it simply did nothing. I figured it might be because I was using the Ubuntu mplayer package, so I downloaded the SVN thing from mplayer hq and ran ./configure, then make, then sudo make install. Now, when I use mplayer on a video file, there is no video window. The audio comes through, but no video shows up anywhere. This is not an improvement. What's more, I can't figure out how to go back to the Ubuntu mplayer package...so my video doesn't work at all right now. I'm having a hard time interpreting the console output, any ideas?
