I'm new to the whole streaming thing so please have mercy. I bouht a new Buffalo WZR 300GN N router which has a built in media server. I also have a hauppage tv capture card which I am using to recrord tv in divx fornat. I 1 hour recorded show is approximatly 1.8 gig and I am copying that file to the nas on the router. The video plays back smoth on my pc but when I stream it to the xbox it is choppy. I am using my laptop as a wireless bridge to my pc and I am seeing around 20 - 30 Mbps throughput while stream to the xbox and that is dedicated 100% xbox. No other devices are accessing the network. I would think 20 -30 Mbps should be plently of throughput to not mae the video choppy. I've tried using a free video converted to reduce the video size to around 600 mb and that file plays back fine but I have to reduce the quality and would prefer to not have to spend an extra 15 minutes to convert each video after it is recorded. Am I just fooling myself and thinking that 20 -30 Mbps should be enough throughput or is something else going on?

what source are you capturing? ~2gb isn't unreasonable for hd, but thats quite a bit for sd

Its a standard analog coax cable, nothing HD. Regardless of the size should the 15-30Mbps be enough to stream the video?

too many variables to consider when using wireless, rather than convert or transcode all of the videos, i'd edit the capture settings, seems like a lot of wasted space.

properly encoded SDTV content can easily be streamed over wireless G

I would love to do that but unfortunatly the pincacle tvcenter pro does not allow me to change the settings.

What about running a wire?
I think most of us on here that move movies around network have bit the bullet and gone mainly wired with some exceptions (laptops)

I have a Hauppauge card too. Why are you converting to DivX? Are you in need of HD space? I leave everything as is. MPEG-2 for both the HD and the SD. and if I really like the show, I convert the WTV to dvr-ms and then on to MKV. 1.8GB for a 1 hour show that is Divx quality??? That doesn't sound good. MKV files are smaller and better quality.

and wires all the way. house is wired completely. one of the perks of a house.

well he said his software wont allow him to change the method in which he captures, i know for a fact how he's encoding is extremely inefficient, but he insists that it has to be done that way.

Hauppauge comes with WinTV which has the option to record video as-is from the source.

So even if you don't use Windows Media Center or MediaPortal or SageTV or GB-PVR or any other number of apps, you at least have WinTV.

So I don't see why he's stuck to this software that does only Divx and you can't adjust settings? Pinnacle makes some decent stuff so I don't think they would make such limited software.
