2 channel 3-D

It seems that with 3-D broadcast you get less resolution.

If DirecTV were to send a 3-D broadcast over two channels and if you had two boxes and some kind of combiner--could you get 3-D with most all of the resolution intact?

I look forward to 3-D--I'm just not that hip about lesser resolution 3-D.

How many years will we have to wait before we could actually get full 1920 X1080 resolution in 3-D?

It's my understanding that the halved resolution is a result of them making use of existing hardware in the field. A new generation of cable/satellite boxes would allow for full 1080p in each eye. Who knows how long the companies will take to roll these out, but my DVR is already about 6 years old...

The real problems with what you suggest are:
  • "some kind of combiner" would need to be digital processor that could take the two uncompressed HDMI video outputs from the two Directv receviers then apply a lot of high powered processing to create the 3D digital video in the HMDI frame packing 1080p format. This external processing box would cost hundreds to thousands of dollars (depending on quantities made/sold).
  • Using two 1080p channels to send HD would mean that twice the satellite capacity would be used as compared to a 2D channel. Using the new 3D encoding extension for MPEG-4 (called Multiview Video Coding - MVC) allows both the right and left video streams to be encoded together with only approx. a 50% increase in the total data rate (i.e., using about 1.5 times the satellite capacity as a single 2D HD channel).

So the bottom line is wait a year or two until Directv comees out with a new generation of HD receivers and DVRs that include the hardware to support full 1080p 3D.

I'm just afraid of the DirecTV COMPRESSORS!

Should I be afraid given their track record?
