This may sound like a weird question, but are the latest DirecTV receivers capable of both IR and RF control via remote? Reason i ask is when I upgrade my current HD box to one of the newer ones that are 3D capable, I want to continue to use my AR remote and the RF mode. I have a HDMI splitter on my signal and a cable feeding a small LCD TV in my kitchen, about 25' from my Family Room TV where I have the DirecTV receiver now and its set to receive RF instructions. So with RF enabled, I can use a 2nd remote (set to RF) to change channels in the kitchen.

Thanks in advance... don't want to order the wrong model and then find it is not RF/IR capable.

The H25 needs an adapter to do either.

I'm hoping this is an either/or for IR & RF, since none will do both "at the same time".
So what comes with the HR24 or HR25? A remote that doesn't work? Or one of the "adapters"

That aside pardon me for adding something else. My HR20 HD works fine but has one annoying glitch. Channel 356 MSNBCHD is received, but doesn't show up in the guide. You have to manually enter the three digits (356) on the remote and then it switches to 356. On the guide, I see 355 then 357. Is there a way to "add" a received channel to the guide (and hardware) so it does show up in the guide?

Thanks!
Are you using a custom guide IronHorse?
Whats a "custom" guide?

In settings, do you have you Favorite Channels set to All or Custom. If custom then you have to add it. That's one problem of using custom, if they add a channel and your not aware of it, it doesn't show up until you add it to your list.

Just got an email from Directv stating the Tivo is now available in my area. I wasn't able to discern the advantages(if any) over my HR24-500. Can anyone comment?

Don't think there are any advantages. There are disadvantages - like no MRV integration with any other receiver in your WHDVR setup.

If you are a fan of the Tivo software, then that is an advantage. However, you do lose multi-room viewing, TV apps, and 3D ability to name a few...

What kind of credits are they giving for new DVRs now? I'm out of contract, have been waiting for Tivo and now that it's announced, I rather get at least an HR24 or the HR34.

I just got a new 3D Panny plasma so the HR20 in the living room won't cut it any more.

Does HR24 require SWM? I don't have SWM.

Do you still have to go to the retention, threaten to cancel dance to get the new DVRs and any necessary install (such SWM) covered at minimal out of pocket?
If you have an hr20, but need 3D, they'll replace it for free with a 3D capable receiver
post #1185 of 1937
A 3D DVR would be at a minimum an HR24?

Does that require SWM install and an MRV fee?

As for "deals", check your account online and/or call in and see. They vary by account.
I had an installer out a few weeks ago [mover's connection] and got my HR20 swapped for a HR24, by "complaining" it didn't do 3D [though I don't even have a 3D TV ]

No, a 3D capable DVR would be anything other than an hr20

And a bummer is, if you call for a 3D swap, they can/will send anything form the HR21 up as a replacement, which can be a step down in speed.
This was why I did mine with an installer, since I was able to ask what hardware he had.

I simply can no longer stand the 8 seconds it takes my HR-21 box to display a new channel after switching. It does this whether routed through my Denon 4311 or directly to my kuro.

The new box is much improved, correct? I've read there's an HR-25...if so, is it better/worhthwile over the 24. I've had DirecTv now for 4 years, so I'm now month to month, correct?

What needs to happen for me to get a new box?

I'd appreciate any advice...I've read a dozen pages of this thread and have yet to unearth this.

Oh and btw: when did the top banner start taking up a THIRD of the screen while staying on for THIRTY-FIVE seconds after switching channels!!!!!!? There is nothing in the settings for this, correct? Absolutely insanely annoying.

There isn't a HR25, only the H25.
The HR24s have a faster CPU.
If it's been over 24 months since your last receiver upgrade/install you're out of commitment.
Sounds like you're still using the old blue GUI, and exit should clear the banner. It's a pain, but it shouldn't take 35 sec to clear. The setting used to be 2, 4, 6 sec, but the latest blue GUI removed the 2 sec option and added 8 sec, which IMO was stupid.
The new HD [black] GUI "may help" when you get it, as it was developed with the HR21-23 to improve their performance.

Can't remember if someone linked to it in this thread or the other DirecTV HDTV thread, but have you tried the remote tip?

After seeing multiple threads regarding how slow HDDVRs respond, I figured I'd post this here as a quick little fix. It helps a bit to make the receiver respond faster in most cases. It doesn't improve by leaps and bounds, but definitely noticeable in most cases.

Start by pressing and holding mute first, then select at the same time until the green light on the remote flashes twice, just like any other programming remote step.

Next, press the numbers 9 6 3 and the green light should flash twice again.

Finally, press the "Chan Down" button and the green light should flash twice again.

This disables the model id on the remote, basically meaning the remote doesn't send a sort of verification code of what model of remote it is with each key press that requires the receiver verify it first before processing the command. It just sends the signal straight through, providing faster response time.

Try this and see if it improves the speed at all.

I was getting really frustrated with my HR21 response time as well, and I did the above, and it did wonders. Just got the new HD GUI last week as well, and things are moving along very well.

Checked my account, all it shows is I can add a DVR, including the Tivo, or WHDVR service, though I know I don't have SWM.

I would be okay with an HR24 but there's no guarantee I'd get one. Plus HR34 is suppose to be available to existing customers starting in February.
thanks for the tips guys.

Well, outside of their fantastically rigid "box policies", after a 45 minute phone call with them, I ended up receiving the typical customer service I've come to expect from them.

First, (2) (I just had one in the living room, formerly) FREE HR-24 DVR's (the tech's been instructed to wait until he has two 24's to install)- tenatively scheduled for Monday.

The Ultimate Choice package for 1/2 off for a year. And (6) mos of Showtime and Starz, free.

Along with a $100 off my current bill.

Not to sound like a fanboy, but I simply cannot argue with the service I've received from this company over the last (4) years.

I'm not sure if this will work for me with my Harmony One remote seeing it seems to affect the remote control and not the box.

Thanks. Ha ha, yes, it takes about 32 seconds for it to clear off...timed it about a dozen times. REAL REAL PITA jumping between football games.

"Well" something ain't right there.
Have you gone through the clear NVRAM steps?
tune to channel one, wait for sound.
press red red blue blue yellow green [quickly]. It will show "NVRAM cleared" in the lower left.
^ I have not tried that. Will do when I get home. Is there additional info I need once that screen propogates?

thanks,
James

Not quite sure of your question.
The steps are fairly simple, and once you see NVRAM cleared "you're done". if you don't see it, more than likely you didn't hit the buttons fast enough, so try again.
This isn't a total "cure all" for all the woes but has helped when the memory "garbage" is the cause.
^ Got ya, I missed those steps being the beginning and end of the process, sorry. I'll try and see what happens,

thanks again,

James
