Current (original) setup is 2yrs old and includes HR21 w/ home theater in living room. An SD DVR in bedroom. Basic SD rcvr in guest room. No inside or attic wiring possible between rooms, just outside, exposed on flat roof. I have a SWM connection for D, supplying all 3 DTVs via coax. I have a Qwest high speed internet connection, modem is in the LR and wired to HR21 and putting out my wireless network signal.
Desired upgrade: HR24 in living room, HR21, 23 or 24 in bedroom, eliminate guest room and return that rcvr, add MRV between LR and BR.
I called Dtv CS and was told I qualify for a free HRxx but can't be guaranteed of the 24; might be 23. I'd need a DECA for the existing HR21 and could move it into the bedroom. She say I'd need the installation, but when I reminded her I have SWM already, she started sounding very unsure and said I might be able to just plug everything in.
What is the best course here? I'm thinking take the the free HRxx and if it turns out to be a 23, send it back unused and then buy a 24 from 3rd party. Or send the 21 back, keep the free 23 and buy/ lease the 24 as well. Will the DECA for the older HR21 be included with the installation? Do I need additional wiring for MRV?
OK, there are a few variables here.
Currently all your receivers are on a SWiM, but there is a modification for DECA/MRV, which is a filter. This can be added externally or simply have the SWiM upgraded with one that has it internally. The installer would figure this out, along with changing out all your splitters which is required for DECA.
The SD receiver isn't going to do MRV, but works with SWiM. You are looking to replace this with an HD receiver, so either adding a H/HR24 will work, or any HR20/21/22/23 with the DECA will work too.
Whether you want to refuse the receiver if it isn't a 24, is up to you, but not the determining factor for MRV & DECA, since you can still have the upgrade without a 24.
The $99 upgrade + $49 service call will get everything setup. You need to ask/make sure you have the internet connection too. This would be the only additional wiring that would be needed, so the DECA can connect to your home network & the internet.
When it's done correctly, all the receivers are networked with the coax and DECA and this bridges to your home network with another DECA.
