DirecTV HD DVR - HR2*/ HR34 Master Topic: one thread for all - Page 51

I'm going to have to get one of my HR-24 recievers replaced. Is there a thread or link to find out what is new and different with the HR-34? I'm not sure if I should get that if they offer it or insist on another HR-24.

Also would I need additional equipment to use Whole Home with one 24 and one 34?

Thanks.

Oh ok. So have you ever tested an optical splitter? As in 1 input and 2 outputs. Not a switch. Seems like it would be a rather simple device and a good solution if my first thought doesnt pan out. Thanks!

Great question..... I wondered what the 24 would do for me in place of my 21. Didnt know there is a 34.

Not with the Dolby, but have with some fiber cable systems.

The 24s are fairly stable and are "simply" a dual tuner DVR.
The HR34 is a whole other animal, with 5 tuners and still suffering some teething problems.

As for moving from a HR21 to a HR24, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Yes, the 24 is much better than the 21.

I really don't care about 5 tuners but does it have a larger hard drive? Also, if you add external storage does it disable the intenal hard drive?

I think I read somewhere that if you have external storage you can only use it with that specific reciever. Is this true? So if you record stuff on an external drive and have the reciever replaced it will all be lost.

Yes (to all the above).

34 FL
Terse comparison.

The 21 has a 320 GB drive, while the 22-24 have 500 GB.
Currently adding an external replaces the internal and they don't combine.
All drives are branded/coded to the hardware, so they can't be moved/accessed connected to another.

One other question about the 34. When the reciever is connected to the TV with HDMI does it turn off the component output or can they both be used at the same time.

I have a service man coming out here tomorrow and I do use both outputs.

They are both active.

I just called DTV, they demanded a hefty $399 to give me HR34 HMC, they say it is not a receiver upgrade?
can some one help, what is the best way? and shall I be able to watch recorded programs on my Ipad perhaps?

All video outputs are active for most material at this time. However, HBO and Cinemax have recently required DirecTV to start enforcing HDCP on their channels, and that is causing issues for some people. If you have the TV hooked up over HDMI turned off and try watching HBO or Cinemax on the TV hooked up over component you will likely end up getting a blank screen with a note that the program is copy protected. You have to either have the TV hooked up over HDMI turned on, or you have to unhook the HDMI cable.

It has been mentioned that HDCP might be coming on Showtime and Starz channels soon also.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess the only reason I would like the 34 would be the larger hard drive. I don't see any reason I would need 5 tuners.

So I'll take another 24 if that's what they bring. No big deal.

I was hoping for more upgrades or features. Wide Open West Cable (which I'm not even considering) came out with a new DVR and the external hard drive gives you more space in addition to the internal drive. It doesn't disable it. And from what I understand you can swap the external drive with other recievers.

One thing I wish they would add would be the ability to play media files stored on hard drives or servers. Like WD Live or PopcornHour does. I know a lot of TVs/Bluray Players have it but it's very limited to file formats.

You can try the call back again and see if a different CSR give you a better deal. Alternative is to say cancel at the prompt asking what you want, which gets you to customer retention. Unless you actually want to cancel if you can't get a HR34 tell them up front you want to keep DIRECTV just seeing if they can make a better deal for your.

As for your iPad question, sounds like you might want nomad. It cost a one time fee of $150 and you have to have your HD DVR's networked so the nomad can access them (not sure if you need WHDVR service to make it work). Nomad takes recordings (not live TV) and transcodes them to a file that you can transfer to PC, Mac's iPad/iPhone and if not out already Droid. Once on your mobile device you can watch them for up to 30 days without needed a network connection to the device.

The 24 will play media files now. I store mine on a USB thumb drive connected to my WNDR 3700 router but you can use certain USB hard drives too. The feature is under menu/extras/music&photos.

It supports a very limited number of formats and doesn't work the greatest though. I've been told using a program like TVersity helps, but it's not worth the trouble to me. I prefer to watch either Blu-Ray or Satellite feeds anyway, so I don't have to many videos on my computers that I bother streaming.

Ah, found it. It found my Server and my GoFlex Network Attached storage right away. Problem is, out of over a 100 files on it only 1 didn't have an X in front of it and when I tried to play it, it played the video but no audio. Guess I'll just stick with my PopcornHour. I just thought this would be good to use in another room. The PCH plays everything including full BR files with menus and features.

Thanks again for all the input.......

Do you mean all existing HR24s or only the ones being delivered now? What are hard drive specs? And which audio video files are playable?

It will be great so I won't have to through $300 for HR34 upgrade

Many thanks Rad much appreciate your comprehensive response. I don't care abt 1TB drive neither 4 channel recordings. I thought HR34 being HMC shall play from your pc and USB drives stores files plus might have Nomad included.
Would you know why would we need hardware for Hd cinema?

MediaShare has been around for a couple years now and any network attached HD receiver can use it. See http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/conten...ogy/mediashare for some more info.

The guy from DTV was here and determined that the reciever needed to be replaced. The only ones he had on the truck or in their service center was the HR21. I told him no way, and he said I don't blame you. So he called DTV Case Services and they are shipping me a new 24. It would have been nice to get the newer one with the larger hard drive but between the two 24's I have enough movies to scroll through already. So I'm happy getting another 24.

All....I was hoping to utilize both digital audio outputs from my HR-21-100. I have the coax audio going to my AVR, and the optical going to a PVR. After a quick check, its looking like the coax to AVR is fine, but no sound through the optical. In other words, coax trumps optical. Does that sound right? Just trying to make sure its not something else ( like a setting or something) before switching to an optical splitter. BTW.....dual video output (HDMI AND COMPONENT) both work fine. Thanks !

I don't think that does make sense.
Optical and coax should both be outputting at the same time, along with HDMI.

Best of luck, but don't be suprised if you end up with something other than an HR24. It is extremely difficult to get DirecTV to actually ship a certain model of reciever, they usually just ship whatever is on the top of the pile they grab them from.

DirecTV called me today to see if I got the new reciever. He said they shipped a new HR24. He said it was in my record that I would not accept anything below the 24. I got the new reciever about an hour after he called. A new 24. AND it's working great.

It's nice to be able to tune to a channel on the first try now. I even tried the old remote and it works good. It was just a pain setting up my channel list again but well worth it. About an hour ago it downloaded the latest software and it's still working fine so I should be in good shape.

Some time back after enduring horrendous multiple in-home tech service calls I too insisted on and received a 24. Congratulations to you. I love my HR24-500.

Same experience here, and they didn't even count it towards an upgrade! Maybe I'll use that for the 34...

I was replacing a 24, so I was asking for the same equipment, not an upgrade.
