Is skyrim the kind of game you can play on it's own without playing the previous one(s)?
Absolutely. The thing with all the Bethesda RPGs is that while you can sink hundreds of hours into them, there's no real time commitment required like JRPGs. Oblivion had a main questline that was like 10-15 hours, 4 guild side stories about 8 hours each, tons of side quests...and on top of that it's just fun exploring the world for countless hours. You could play the main quest and be done with it, or just keep going as long as you're enjoying yourself. None of it needs to be done in any order...you can do all the quest lines at once if you desire. You're just a dude in a wide world to explore....it's like the polar opposite of CoD.
There's a whole ton of associated lore and backstory to the world, but each game is self contained. They're not really sequels that continue the same story...skyrim takes place decades later than oblivion. I started just fine at oblivion, and that's number 4.
It's got a pretty steep learning curve at first but if you stick with it until you get it, there's nothing else like it. Its my number two favorite series in gaming...and I'm sure you can all guess number one.
