Look at the Epik Legend. Dual 12's like the Empire for $499. http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/legend.html

For what its worth, I just wanted to say thanks to EndersShadow for putting this list together. I agree with speckdzl4shzl, this should be a sticky. Great resource.
Definitely worthy of a sticky. Just please try to clean up the list now and then so there aren't 5 year old subs on it that no one can find.

Which ones listed are in that category?
I don't think any are. I think what aviphysics meant by "now and then" was a request to keep the list current as time passes. JMO

Gotcha, I do plan to try and update it as stuff comes out. I do however want to give "new" subs time to be tested before throwing them up on the list (i.e. Tweak City sub)
must be a sticky thread...
but it should be limited to $1000 range...

My future wife would have me killed, skinned and stuffed before something like that would fly....

In the meantime I will just sit on the forums and enjoy living through some of the other builds I see here

My wife didn't blink an eye when I asked if I could get a Dual Drive. And I am not the only one who has an understanding wife. So choose your future wife carefully or get a DD system before the future wife.

Well too late to get it now, getting married on the 21st. I am pushing my luck as it is with aquiring a Carver AC-705x 125x5 amp this weekend. She is aware we will be rolling with dual SVS PC-12NSD's once we can afford them.

Once we get a house with a dedicated theater I might have more leeway with purchases like that, but honestly I would go DIY before spending that much (think dual Danleys )

Congrats.

I do not have that sort of time and a total lack of woodworking skills to tackle DYI. I even hate to paint. And the last I look Dual DTS-10 will set you back 6 grand. But as they say to each his own.

Hope you have a wonderful life with the misses.

yeah, neither do I, but I have the interest in learning (and carpenters as uncles ), but I have seen the kits going for 1k on ebay unassembled...and thats what I would probably do...

I would like to hear a bit more about what got any given specific sub on the list, as some I have not heard of, and outside of this thread have no comparable review site or thing to check and read more succinctly about them

Also, any reason Klipsch isn't on the list? I was just curious, I went into a store today and they reccomended it pretty highly, but I couldn't tell if it was a "monster cable" type of sell, or they really were still known for good quality.

I will be adding that one to the list, however I wanted to wait until its a little more widely available and we have some user opinions on build quality, etc...

I am going to try and not list as many Big Box Store offerings, but rather the Internet direct subs that seem to be recommended again and again here.

Obviously you can go to a Big Box Store and hear Klipsch and even Polk, but you cannot hear many of the other subs listed. As the Internet Direct subs tend to offer a better price to performance ratio I wanted to give you something to compare it with. I personally have never heard a Klipsch sub so I cannot comment on quality (however company is decently well known). I just dont see those subs recommended too frequently on this site so thats why they havent made the list. I believe its because for the price there are better offerings from Internet direct companies. I am however not against adding them to the list, but I wanted to keep it as Internet Direct specific as possible.

The Polk subs are on it because while their performance isn't the best, their price point makes it hard not to recommend them for folks with smaller budgets..

I vote for a $1,000-$1,499, a $1,500-$1,999 and a $2,000+ category.

Oh, and thanks for all of the work. I really like this thread.
