Need help with master bedroom remodel!

Thread Starter
I got no input in the owner's thread -so I thought I would repost here. I took the plunge and purchased the UN46B8500 yesterday from Amazon for my master bedroom/bathroom remodel. I also bought the Yamaha YSP 4100 sound projector, the SPM-K130 mounting bracket for it, and also thanks to Kizo in the mount thread here I got the Peerless SP-850 for the Samsung panel.

The new toys won't be here for about a week, and it will be another month till I can hook it all up once the work is all done, but my question for you guys is about what size to make the recess for this hook up and what should I do for cables. Framing is on Monday. With the swivel mount I don't have to worry too much about access to the back of the TV,I think. Below is a simple diagram of the room for perspective.

The power outlet and the HDMI outlet will be inside the recess and then the HDMI cable will go from point A, up and above the doorway and down to near the floor at point B - about 14 ft in total. I'm getting a 3 X 1 HDMI switch that will sit in a small corner unit at point B, and I just plan on putting the DirectTV box (switching from Comcast-arrgh!!) and a PS3 in there. So I am thinking to just run one 22AWG HDMI cable in the wall. Should I add an optical digital cable too? I thought I read somewhere that without that you can't get the TrueHD sound via the HDMI, but now I can't figure out where I read that.

Dimensions (I think) for the recess are 46" x 38":

16"

Should I put the sound bar on top or on bottom (~8.5" high)? Does anyone have this in a bedroom and think there is an ideal height watching it from bed? This seems too high, but as we won't be sitting on a couch it is hard for me to judge. The bottom of my family room Panny (TH-50PH9UK) is only 27" from the floor so I am worried that this is too high, but there is no bed in that room to judge better now.

Any input on the cabling or the recess dimensions is much appreciated!

For cabling it wouldn't hurt to run a couple rg6, a couple cat 5, and an extra hdmi. The run is relatively short so the incremental cost shouldn't be much. Wouldn't hurt to run component video and stereo audio too but that may be overkill.

For the size as long as it is smaller than the tv and big enough to fit the mount plus some extra room for cabling, etc. you should be ok. When I did a similar thing I just looked up the dimensions of a few mounts I was considering and made sure I could accommodate any one of those. This is assuming you are just recessing the tv of course. If you are recessing the speaker too then you would have to accommodate for that.

The depth could be tricky. Are the walls framed with 2x4's? If so it might be tough to fit in normal electrical boxes in the recessed portion. You might want to consider mounting the eletrical plug and any other boxes on the edge of the recessed portion (so they are perpendicular to what is shown on the diagram). If it is a 2x4 wall you really can't recess it that much because you still need lumber behind the mount to attach to.

If it is in a bedroom you can get away with mounting it higher than what you would a living room. Easiest thing to do is to sit on your bed and see where is most comfortable for your eyes.
