Need some advice - PN50C7000 or UN46C7000

Hi

I was hoping to get some advice regarding these sets. Past few weeks I spend my time reading impressions about them and it seems both sets have their own 'issues'. From what I understand the plasma has high black levels and IR problems while the LED suffers from clouding and flashlighting.

Now the thing is, I got a perfect deal on the 50 inch plasma for 1300 euro. The LED is more expensive retailing at 2299,- and smaller in size. However while in the store i was very impressed about the PQ from the LED. The C6500 plasma was standing on the other side and in comparison it just didnt look as impressive ( not sure about the settings do ). Then there is the fact that there where different demos running on the sets. On the LED they had a beautifull demo with trees and flowers etc while on the plasma it was a demo focused on explaining features.

All the help is very appreciated, thx!

Not sure if this helps, but....

I just returned a Samsung UN55B7100 for a PN58B860. ..I bought the LED b/c I liked the lighter weight and lower energy consumption/ cooler operation, etc.. ...Unfortunately, after watching it for 3+ weeks, I just couldn't ignore the flash-lighting and clouding. My wife and I watched Tudors on HBO and it was very distracting. It got to the point that every time we watched a movie with dark scenes, I was looking for it. ..The Plasma by comparison does have an every so slightly softer image. But, to me, I think it actually looks more realistic. And the blacks are sooo much more even. ..No flash-lighting, no clouding. Thankfully I have not suffered any of the buzzing that people have experienced and the set is only 30lbs heavier than the LED while 3" larger so I was able to hang it on a wall with only brief assistance from my wife and son.

..The PN58B860 also seems to have a better fit/ finish. ..The UNxxx had a wider black bezel around the screen that very obvious ripples in the plastic. ..I thought it was just my unit but a trip to Best Buy confirmed that they were ALL like this - including most other brands/ models! ..The PNxxxx suffers from much less b/c the bezel seems to be narror. ..It also seems to be far more rigid, perhaps b/c of the glass screen.

Thanks for your reply, really helpfull I will probally react in the same way regarding the clouding / flashlighting. Do you think Samsung can fix these issues with firmware updates? or is it really a hardware 'fault'. Also I was hoping you could share some more impressions regarding IR on your plasma. Is it really something to worry about? because now and then I like to play some videogames and i'm a little bit worried about possible burn in. Also Besides the softer image, what do you think of the overall PQ on the plasma regarding sharpness / crispness?

Others could probably answer this better than I but from what I've read these issues are inherent in the current technology and affect all LED sets to some degree, particularly all edge-lit units. The much pricier LED designs (local lighting I believe it's called) suffer less but still exhibit this.

As for IR i can't help here much either except to say that I've thus far experienced none of this. ...Though i don't play video games I do have Apple TV and will often stream music from iTunes and will have my TV displaying the song being played. ..Though the image shifts there are still parts that are stationary and could possibly burn-in. ..Perhaps I simply haven't done this enough for it to be an issue. ..If you are a gamer one other thing you might want to think about is processing lag. ..The LEDs, as i understand it, have more of this. ..So what you see on the screen will lag behind what you're doing with your game control. Though not a gamer this lag was a problem for me b/c I output the TV's audio signal via optical digital output on the back of the set to a 2-channel integrated amp/ DAC (Peachtree Nova). ...Due to the processing the video lacks behind the audio ever so slightly. If I used an A/V receiver that has a sync feature this would not be an issue, but I don't. ..This was definitely more noticeable with the LED than the Plasma I have now. ..i can't say if this is specific to the specific Samsung model I had, to Samsung generally, or all LED's in general.

As I suspect you're beginning to realize ALL these TV sets have some limitation. ..I think you need to pick the ones you can most easily live with.
