Official JTR Orbit Shifter Subwoofer Thread - Page 12

Both my sub's will be in the back. Once the new OS arrives, I will play arround with placement. Having 2 will give me more options for evening out the bass in my room.
My Lexicon does have seperate Lt and Rt sub outputs so i will have the capability of setting different delays to each sub if needed.

I have just ordered an Orbit Shifter for my dad's media room. It will be replacing his Epik Conquest/MBM-12 combo.

I will have plenty to report when it's all setup as I'm making a bunch of changes at the same time (moving from Jamo D7s to JTR T8s and Slanted 8s). I've owned plenty of subs myself (SVS PB2+, JL F113, Hsu ULS-15, currently have a Submersive). Excited to join the OS club and add one more of these awesome subs to California.

By the way, for anyone trying to get a hold of Jeff, as has been stated before, just give him a call. He answered the very first time I tried him this morning and we exchanged numerous calls after that while I was deciding on what to order. He was very helpful and I think we reached the right decision in the end.

I was debating between a powered Captivator, Growler Duo, or Orbit Shifter. Room is 13x21x9 with a completely open back wall to the rest of the house.

Congratulations, and welcome to the club. 1 OS is plenty in my room and I am sure you will be more than happy. 2 will be pure bass nirvana.... Hopefully i will be able to turn it up without my neighbor lady complaining too much.....lol

So this is where all the cool guys hang out.

With my other sub's i always had to keep an eye on the amp lights to make sure i didn't clip them when the heavy bass scenes came on. That worry is gone now and i can keep both eyes on the movie without worring about pushing the OS into overload.

Any updates? Hopefuly mine will be delivered next month. i have the spot picked out for it already.

Can this sub be laid on its side? And can this sub be stacked? Thanks!

Just did a cursory read through this thead; would I be correct in saying that the Terraform XL will best the Orbit Shifter LF under 25hz, but the OS LF is unrivaled above 25hz?

Thanks again.

That is the best guess but as the Terraform XL is still not a finished product verification is impossible.

I am very happy with the ELF capability of the OS's and like the trade off of having virtually unlimited capability in the 20-100Hz range.

I spent some time with Jeff last night at his shop near Chicago. I spent some time with my newly completed Orbit Shifter as well. I now cannot wait until this thing arrives.

To avoid cross posting, you can read all of my impressions and see some pictures in the JTR Speaker thread here:

My second OS is shipping out tomorrow...... Will post some pic's and stuff once i get it set up in my room and dialed in.
ok, the sub is here stacked on top of the other and i still have tweakin to do. Playing FOTP i was able to hit 120db from my LP at -10 on the Lexicon. I have the volume on the amps at 8 and it goes to 32 and the sub output on the Lexicon set as low as it will go. I have to to take my son and his gf who is visiting from oot to SF today and will play more tomorrow. What I can tell you so far is 2 of these subs fill my whole 2,000 sq ft house with bass.

Hi haskin1234

How did you stacked them, where are the mouth exit looking at ..... any pictures
post #346 of 572
They are stacked on their sides with the mouth firing accross the back of my sofa.

I'm sure this is a silly question, but why on earth would you you need two Orbit Shifters in a little space like that?

Would it be better to face them towards one another?
I will b moving them to another location today. I don't have many choices in my room tho. I went from having a huge dip at 60 htz to a big peak which should b easier to flatten out.
Man, thats alot of bass behind the listening position.

Haskin,

After some listening time, what audible differences do you hear going from 1 to 2 OS.
Here is where I am at in new position
LL
Ok, so I moved them from behind my listening position to Rt side wall in front of a window and about 3ft from the corner the mouth is facing the corner and also my rack with all my equipment.......hope that's ok? Anyway, huge difference in ouput as I had my first bass casualty.....lol knocked down a glass globe from the entry way ceiling fixture when I was playing FOTP.

First off I should apologize for helping set you on this path of destruction . Assuming there is room, have you thought of putting them on either side of your TV? You could place the mains (COAX on the bottom) on top of the OS's sort of like I have done. Would be good to order a couple of Sub Dudes (the larger ones) to iso the mains from the OS's. You would have to relocate stuff on either side of the display but that might be easier than trying to place the OS's and would give you all of the sound energy emanating from the front stage. I have found that to be a good thing .

Again, my apologies to your wife...

Lol, no Rob actualy you did me a favor. I moved away from high end 2 channel speakers to pro audio speakers that actualy perform better. Because of the length of the sub's I don't think I can move them up front yet, but i will be changing my room arround as soon as I get a new 58" LED TV and my plan is to put both the center speaker and monitor on top of the subs.

You're not replacing that Rear Projection unit, are you? That has to be a valuable collectors piece.

Glad you're happy with the decidely non-audiophile setup. They don't know what they are missing, do they...

Can anyone comment on the plusses and minuses comparing 1 Orbit Shifter to 2 Captivators?
Thanks in advance,
Joe H
Are you talking 2 powered Caps? For a little more you can get 2 OS's which will out perform 2 caps.

The OS pair would certainly play louder in general, but I'm thinking the Caps would most likely have more strength in the 15-20hz area.
Below the tuning of the Orbit Shifter, which is I belive 25hz it acts as a sealed sub. So not taking into acount room gain either the 20hz or 15hz tune Captivator should have an advantage below 25hz. Both the OS and Cap use the same driver just different parameters tweaked for their perspective alignments.
