Bitstream Audio using MPC-HC & FFDShow in Vista 32-bit

Hi All,
Here is my setup before I get into my situation:
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 240
MOBO: Asus M3N72-D
RAM: G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2
GPU: Sapphire 5670 (ATI CCC 10.4)
Display: Samsung LCD 4661
AVR: Denon 790
OS: Vista 32-bit

So as of now I have ATI 10.4 installed on my build without EDID Override and using the ATI HDMI Audio driver that comes installed with CCC. I am able to get bitstreaming audio using PDVD9 with any of the BD discs that I have. I would like to be able to play all of my ripped BD/HD-DVDs using MPC-HC + FFDShow. I have installed the latest versions of MPC-HC and FFDShow and have uninstalled any other codecs that were on my system. I followed the guide put up by dbone: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010...7-htpc-part-i/

However this guide relates to Win7 and I'm using Vista. The one big difference I see between this guide and my setup is that I can't seem to find the Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder to block it in MPC-HC. I am able to play some HD-DVD rips since I think these don't have HD audio tracks. When trying to play BD rips like Dark Knight or Star Trek or Quantum of Solace or Zombieland the video seems to be played back faster than normal and all I here is static for audio.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to correct my setup? Thanks for your help.

Your problem could be the version of ffdshow (and maybe MPC-HC) you're using.

For a excellent working version of ffdshow (x32) see this post by Stargazer at doom9.

Then get the latest MPC-HC from www.xvideo.ru.

Also, it is not strictly necessary to define any external filter for MPC-HC. You need only to check that ffdshow is the only audio decoder active during playback.

How do I make sure that ffdshow is the only audio decoder active?

See Step 7:

Right-click on the MPC-HC window while the movie is playing back and select "Filters". See that "ffdshow audio decoder" is the only audio filter there.

When I click on filters during playback this is what I see:

Default DirectSound Device
Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter)
Audio Switcher
MPC Video Decoder
ffdshow Audio Decoder

I have installed the latest MPC-HC and the ffdshow build that was linked. I am able to get lpcm audio with videos that have TrueHD but static audio with videos that have DTSMA. Still both don't get me the nice little blue light that shows that the true HD audio track is playing. Not sure what to do now. Thanks for the suggestions, hopefully something comes up to fix this issue.

hmm ... looks fine. Still, the symptoms you describe in 1st. post point to an ffdshow problem. So try uninstalling/installing completely ffdshow (even purging the folder in program files if necessary). Then recheck setup with dbone1026's guide.

Guess I'll keep on trying different versions of ffdshow. I am able to play back BD discs properly with HD audio in PDVD9. I'll uninstall the version that you linked and completely purge the folder and then reinstalling again. Hopefully one of these days I can get a copy of Win7 and hopefully be done with the issue all together. I will keep you posted on my purging and installing efforts.

Thanks for the link. I will give this a try as the clean install of ffdshow did not show any differences. Thanks for the suggestions.

I was able to follow the steps and get bitstreaming using Reclock and MPC-HC. Thanks for the link and now I'm a happy camper. Thanks to all for their help.
