I have (1) 12" Rockford Fosgate P3 sub (500 rms, 4 ohms) hooked up to Rockford Fosgate P500 amp (500 rms, 4 ohms bridged) in bridged mode.
I just installed both the sub and amp a week ago and everything was working fine. To properly break-in the sub, I kept the volume low, until today. On the way home from work, I just couldn't resist the urge to turn up the volume and hear my P3 do what it's supposed to do. Well, it thumped pretty good through a couple of songs, and all the sudden I completely lost bass. Like as if the amp just turned off. But the amp is on. The sub is getting power from the amp because the cone moves, but there is barely any sound coming out of it. I'd have to turn up the voume way up just to hear the faint distorted bass from the sub. I pushed on the cone and don't hear any scrathing noises. The cone flexes and no visible external damage. I hooked up the voltmeter to the sub and it shows consistent 4.4 ohms which seems alright since the sub is rated at 4 ohms.
There are no visible external damage to the amp other than it gets warm while it's on. But I think that's what the heat sink surrounding the case is supposed to do? Soak up the heat from inside and disperse to ambient? Anyway, the power light is on, and no smoke or burning smell. I parked the car and came back later when the amp is cooled down to see any changes. Nothing. Still faint distorted bass out of the sub.
I'd guess the P3 is blown but I'm just not sure since I never had blown subs before. And my P3 behavior doesn't seems to match the common blown sub symptoms. No scratching noise when I push on the cone, no clearly audible (but faint) distorted sound output and the cone stil flexes. Do I really have a blown subwoofer? Could it be the amp? Or something else? Would my sub be covered by warranty if it is blown? I only had the system in for a week....
