Samsung UN55B6000 - Calibration tips?

Thread Starter
Found a thread on this forum for calibration for the Samsung UNXXBXXXX models and tried a few last night but just wasn't completely in love. I tried cnet's calibrations for optimal movie watching but found it a bit too dark though I understand their logic when they say it's truer to what the filmmaker wanted you to see.

My room is very bright and I like a bright, vibrant, sharp picture. The TV was originally a display model at the store and the calibrations it had made the HD picture have that "bluray" effect where everything is so enhanced and sharp and digital looking. Is it weird that I sorta like that look for normal, standard HD TV watching?

So basically, if anyone has any awesome calibrations I can follow, please let me know! Thanks!

Sounds like you like an uncalibrated picture to me. Dynamic, Standard, and Natural pic modes on the Samsungs will give you three varieties of such a picture. Movie mode (usually with Warm2 color tone) will give you a starting point for a calibrated image. However, it doesn't sound like that's what you want. Calibration is about reference viewing and not personal preference (except for peak white light output and gamma, which have a range of acceptable values). If you wish to 'calibrate' a mode like Standard, you can adjust the basic settings with a disc with test patterns on it, like this one.

if you have a bright room, calibrated settings with increased backlight and a lower gamma is what you're after.

As they say in THX training, it does not matter whether or not you like it, the question is whether it is accurate or not.

Adjusting to where you like it is not calibration and that is ok. It is just not calibration.
