Denon AVR-2310Ci or Onkyo TX-SR608.. Quick! =) I'm planning to buy today

Hello,

After much reading and flip flopping as a home theater noob and almost starting with a HTiB until I heard them in person at a store... I have narrowed it down to the Denon AVR-2310 or the Onkyo TX-SR608...

I don't care for 3D for now.. maybe in a couple years when I see how the 3D wars/prices are going... I just want something that will be easy to calibrate (I know the Denon has MultEQ which I hear is a lot better than the 608's 2EQ)

Besides 1.4 does the 608 does have anything more or better than the Denon 2310CI... I have been looking at so many specs non stop for the past week I am about to have an overload and see some seasoned home theater people to throw in their advice to help me make a final decision. Price wise I know the 2310 is more than the 608 but that is not an issue as the 2310 is not a lot more.... THANKS!

Then you should be comparing the Denon 2310 to the Onkyo 707. Did I just make your decision any harder? Between these two its a toss up. I'd look at the 707's specs and do a compare of it with 2310. Now it becomes which do you think has the most options or connectivity you will use. Then it becomes not so hard.

Onkyo 707 There's 1 in Vann's clearance for about $470, or get the 706 for $410. Great bang for the buck, and they retain full Onkyo warranty.

I was ultimately debating between the exact same receivers and the Pioneer 1020.

I liked the Onkyo 608 for all the trickle down features of the 707 and HDMI 1.4. The biggest thing it seemed to be missing from the 707 was Audyssey MultEQ- it has 2ch EQ. I've also heard Onkyo's run extremely hot and are not the most reliable receiver out there.

The Pioneer 1020 had HDMI 1.4 and an ethernet jack. Again, this has Pioneer's version of 2ch EQ and not MultEQ. Also, the firmware couldn't be updated through ethernet which I thought was a big loss.

Then a sweet deal on the Denon 2310 came around for maybe $100 more than these two. I realized that I wouldn't be taking advantage of HDMI 1.4 any time soon and wanted MultEQ and a pre-out.

So notwithstanding HDMI 1.4 and an ethernet jack, this receiver is definitely a step up from the Onkyo 608 and Pioneer 1020.

Argh yes the 707 is very similar to the 2310.. since I am new to home theater I don't know what all the specs are? can someone tell any difference between the 707 and 2310 as to what would be the better of the two? Is it true the xx7 Onkyo models run very hot? Also which has a better GUI?Thanks!

The cheapest I can find the 707 is for ~$70 more than the 2310

The 707 and 2310 are virtually the same price on the Vann's site, on the Clearance Center.

Thanks but for a returned open box item or refurb I would only save ~$100 or less so I would rather get it brand new...

Still not sure of either the 707 or 2310.. input anyone? thank you!!

Toss a coin, the difference isn't worth the worry. The only thing the Onkyo has over the Denon is THX certification. The only thing the Denon has over the Onkyo is the video processor. Neither is that important to fuss over though. Get the cheaper of the two and be happy, either will do as they are supposed to.

Onkyo 707 advandtages are preamp outputs for adding external amp later, Burr Brown DAC, 6 hdmi inputs, volume bar overlay through hdmi. Don't know about the 707, but my 706 runs hot, even when I'm not using its amp section. Is this a worry? Some say yes, others say no. But from my experience with Onkyos, they aren't any less reliable than other brands out there.
Denon 2310 runs cooler, and maybe that's its only advantage over the 707

Ordered the Denon AVR-2310ci from 6ave.com today for $528, free shipping.

Glad to be back to Denon.

My first quality receiver was the Denon AVR-2700. Been purchasing Onkyo since then--price/performance/inputs were always better than the comparable Denon's.

But I missed the sound that my old AVR-2700 produced. So...ponied up for the AVR-2310ci.

You could be right--but I hope not!

The difference in sound when I purchased the 2700 might have just been from upgrading to a quality receiver. Still, my Onkyo's never could produce the surround sound as well as the 2700 when listening to CD's. Everybody is different, and do not hear sound exactly the same way as some one else.

No matter who the manufacturer is, I wish they all would hire some one whose first language is English, and not a "techie", to rewrite their manuals before they ship the product here.

Well im on the fence too.... onecall.com has the Onkyo HT-RC180 for 549 and the denon AVR-2310ci for 528.00. My understanding the onkyo ht rc180 is similar to the onkyo 807?

I am facing the EXACT same decision. Tough choice.... need to read up more this weekend and buy on Monday. Both seem to represent great deals.

Anyone know which has a better UI?
