I have been reading this Dune Buzz, and thought that I would comment on the pluses of the HTPC.
I went the HTPC Route in two places, my bedroom and my living room.
I then added a 2TB WD20ears HDD drive to each (about $79.00 at Amazon) just for my TM700 files.
One HTPC has a Blu-Ray player and one has the LG BH10 Blu-Ray Player and Burner.
Both HTPC's have Cyberlink's PowerDVD 10 Ultra MarkII for Playback of Blu-Rays and my TM700 Videos.
They each have PowerDirector 10 Ultra.
They each have HDMI Out to Pioneer AV Receiver and on to HDTV.
The plus of the HTPC's beside doing everything that the Dune can do, is that
on the HTPC with my LG burner, I was able to Successfully burn Blu-Ray discs of my TM700 Videos.
Great Christmas gifts for those that have Blu-Ray capabilities.
I also converted my TM700 Files to VOB for burning to DVD's.
I can Stream Content from the Web, Search the Web, play Games and do everything that obviously a PC can do.
I was originally choosing a game console such as PS3 because it also played Blu-Ray's, but realized that I was really feeling limited as to what I could actually do with it and the Streaming world that is evolving!
So I went to look at the computers, I ended up buying a computer and yes I spent twice what I was going to spend on a PS3.
The burner was around $150.00 and the added software another $250.00, so granted I had a thousand dollars wrapped up in it and three times the cost of a $300.00 PS3 but I can also do the same and 8x + what I can do with a PS3 or a Dune.
If you have the money for a Dune or PS3, think about what you ultimately want today and in the Future.
If all you want or need is Games and viewing at Home then go that route...But..If you think that you may want more, then what you have is a start in that direction.
There are also much less costing computers out there than what I got and you can add components to it over time.
As long as the Computer Specs are Strong enough to do the the task!
A good Processor, Power Supply, Video Card hopefully with HDMI Out etc.
Just a FYI..Bottom Line Enjoy whatever you do...This Stuff is surely the Bomb!
I still Love my TM 700, I drive a lot for my job and the 700 is on the seat next to me everyday!
I do almost a Video Diary if you will.
I am now catching the change of Seasons here in Upstate NY with the Fall Colors and the soon to be Winter Snow!
I have some Great Videos!
Niagara Falls and Taughannock Falls State Park in Ithaca and near Cornell University. Great Country up here fit for a TM 700!http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/62/details.aspx
The attached Pictures were taken from a video that I shot at Toughannock Falls.
They are Snapshots take from my Video, the nice thing about PowerDVD is that you can pause and click frame by frame until you see the picture that you like,
then click a Snapshot Icon and it will be saved as a Hi-Res Bitmap Image, so you do not need to stop shooting Video to take pictures, you can extract them later.
Then I use ACDC to re-size and convert or anything I want to do with them.
I have never regretted the HTPC Route, it is of course just another option, and that is what this Forum is all about!
