The Official Sony Bravia KDL EX500 Calibration Settings Thread! Post yours!! - Page 2

I know this is an old thread but if someone can help, I'd appreciate it.

I have a KDL 32EX500.

HDMI-1 goes to my Rogers PVR (used daily).

HDMI-4 goes to my Oppo BDP-93 Blu Ray player (weekly use).

I also use the PC input to connect various laptops (occasional use, mainly XP).

Room is somewhat dark (dark, not pitch black) most of the time.

=====

1. Can someone offer optimized settings for this TV?

-----

2. Also, does anyone know why when I connect via a shielded 6ft vga cable to my PC's (ati/nvidia/intel chipsets), although my PC desktop seems ok, if I open a browser window for example, the screen is fine for a few moments, then goes very dark, almost impossible to see. It's not frozen, I can still navigate but it's not of any use if I cannot resolve this. If I minimize or close the browser window, the display is fine again?

Example laptop would be a Lenovo T-61, XP w/SP3. The display resolution for the TV (in XP) is locked at 1920x1080 and cannot be changed.

-----

3. It is also listed as a 'Generic TV'. Is there a profile available for this TV that I should be using?

-----

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's hoping some kind soul trips over this old thread and can help me

Here are the best settings I have found online
picture-custom
backlight-2
picture-90
brightness-54
color-48
hue-0
color temp-warm2
sharpness-10
noise reduction-off
mpeg noise reduction-off
motionflow-high
cinemotion-auto1
ambientsensor-off
advanced settings=
adv. contrast enhancer-low
black corrector-medium
gamma-0
clear white-off
live color-medium
white balance all on 0
These are the best settings I have found online. These are professional specs. They said to leave the adv settings off but I changed it alittle. It looks like it is suppose too. If you spend this much on a tv you should get the best pic. I have these settings on blue ray and my xbox 360. Looks really good

I have had my 55EX501 for about a year now and this is what I have using the Spears&Munsil BD disc.

Picture Mode-Custom
Backlight-1
Picture-81
Brightness-51
Color-51
Hue-R1
Color temp-Warm2
Sharpness-1
Noise reduction-off
MPEG NR-off
Motionflow-Standard
Cinemotion-off
Ambient sensor-off

Adv. settings
ACE-Low
Black Corrector-off
Gamma-0
Clear white-low
Live color-off
White balance-all set to 0

Display-Full pixel

Everything looks good for blurays and dvds except that reds look a little too much like orange. I don't know if there is anything I can do to make the reds look more like red. Thanks.

What do you use as the source to calibrate the antenna TV input? Also, how is a set calibrated for playing streaming internet video, such as Netflix, through the built-in Netflix player? I have a DVE DVD for calibration of the HDMI input serving my player, but the main use of this TV is for watching OTA channels and internet video.

BTW, as far as I can find, none of the OTA stations which I can tune broadcast a video test pattern.

As for streaming video, the set supports separate calibration for each input source, but there is not a separate source that I can find which corresponds to streaming internet video.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

It's amazing that you can play video games with the sharpness set so high. I wouldn't be able to stand it.

What is the range of the Sharpness setting on this TV?

I have 46" EX521 and managed to get the perfect settings in the store (I brought my laptop since I am *extremely* anal about getting TVs to act like true monitors). The thing is, sharpness is 0-100 and 50 seems to be the proper setting to not affect the input quality. 0-50 actually blurs the image. Why would you want that? Especially for PC/Xbox/PS3?

The main thing for me is setting SCENE to Graphics, and from there most of this is already set properly for PC, etc. The most important settings being the Full Pixel aspect ratio and the disabling of edge enhancement and color enhancements.

Anyway.. maybe the range for the Sharpness setting is different for the EX500 than most TVs?

I'd always suggest leaving it at 50 on a TV where the range is 0-100 (which is equivalent to not sharpening at all, and not blurring at all).

For the record here are the settings I ended up with after calibration with CalMan Chroma5 colorimeter:

Mode: Custom
Backlight: 4
Picture: 85, 52, 52, G1, W1
Gamma: -2
Gain: Red -13, Green 0, Blue -13
Bias: Red 0, Green -1, Blue +2

This set looks amazing, especially when viewed dead-on (viewing angle is not so hot). Enjoy!
