Advice needed - Boston Acoustics setup

I am a novice audiophile (pardon the oxymoron), and I'd like some advice on this setup I'm considering for my home theatre system - assume it'll be used 50% for movies and 50% for music.

Floorstanding: Boston HS 450 pair
Centre: Boston HS 225
Surround: Boston HS 50 pair
Sub: Boston HPS10
Receiver/amp: Denon AVR 1610

I am getting this whole set up for around US$1100 - is it worth it? It's to be used in a 15ft X 20ft living room and I place a premium on clarity. Would love to get the Wharfedale Diamond 10 setup, as it is remarkably clear, but I'm afraid they're a bit out of my price range.

I've heard this setup, and it sounds good - just wondering Polk Audio's similar setup (Tsi400 pair, tsi 100 pair, cs10 and psw110) is better? It costs $300 extra - is it worth it? Also, should I plump for Denon 1910 to enable upscaling? I'll be watching quite a bit of TV on this, so might be worth it. Is th4e audio quality that much different between the 1610 and 1910?

Also, what's the general impression of these Bostons - are they respectable for an entry-mid level system? Thanks a ton guys.

Boston Acoustic speakers are very good - maybe my favorite in their price range. I would pay $300 more for Boston than for Polk but others disagree.

Why do you want floorstanding speakers for L/R if you are going to have a sub? Things can get more interesting with better bookshelf speakers. PSB Image B6 spring to mind..

Ask in the sub forum for a good sub in your price range, rarely is the best choice a matching brand.

Thanks Ron - it's just that I'm getting this whole system as a package in clearance, so it's actually cheaper for me to get these floorstanders than go with something like PSB Alpha B1 5.1, which sounds great, but since they are all small bookshelf speakers, they dont really compare with this setup. Plus, I'm not a huuuge fan of the PSBs in my price raneg - a bit too boomy.

Like I said, Wharfedale Diamond 10.5s are the best ones I've heard in this segment, but they're just a bit out of my budget.

Any thoughts on the 1610 receiver vs 1910? Or should I post that in the receiver forum? Thanks.

I saw some really good info on the 1610 v 1910 on the receiver forum, so that seems to be settled - have decided to stick with 1610 as I don't really need the extra bells and whistles.

Is getting the floorstanders AND a sub actually worse than getting bookshelf speakers and a sub? I mean, I can always turn the sub off if it becomes messy, can't I? Just wondering, coz I'm really getting these Bostons at a bargain, and they sound great. Only problem is the horrible Mist colour.

I expect you will be happy with Boston Acoustics, IMO they are very underrated. Sorry I can't help with receivers. I like the ones with really beefy amps like HK, Marantz, Rotel, Pioneer Elite, etc., but I understand Denons are good and have really good features esp. on the HT side of things.

Before you buy try and listen to Energy RC-10s or RC-30s, they are very good too.

No, not worse, just in the lower price ranges can be money poorly spent since you should be crossing them over at 80hz anyway, sounds like your bargain deal is negating that.

Don't minimize hating the colors btw, that can end up mattering more than you think.

Just for fun - here are a couple of my other favorite alternatives:

Energy RC-10 (2 pairs)
RC Mini Center
HSU STF-2

OR

PSB Image B6
PSB Image C5
PSB Image B4
Same HSU Sub

I've heard good things about Energy - unfortunately, they are well out of my price range where I am. I think I'll stick with the Bostons - thanks a lot for your help.

As for the colour, I'm lucky enough to have a partner whose response (when I pointed out that the colour would clash with the room was - "function before form. If you like them, buy them." Truly awesome reply.
