Now that's a nice BIG screen! Looking forward to seeing it in place. I love my XD fabric..

Thanks Moggie! Pondering now whether I should use the standard mounting, or come up with something that would give me easier access to behind the screen when needed (like piano hinge and hatchback shocks?).
Mines mounted with a "french cleat". I can offer that I underestimated how frequently I go back there. I assumed it would be a set it and forget it sort of thing, but I've been behind the screen over a dozen times in the last year. MAKE IT CONVENIENT AND EASY.
Definitely make it easy to get back there, Ive been behind mine a lot.

I used a piano hinge on the top and some bolts through T-nuts at the bottom which I threaded in or out to fine tune the "level" of the screen since the top was hinged. I simply pull it out and use a prop once its swung out.

Being able to swing that thing out go back there tweak whatever, swing it back, and hit play without adjusting shift level or zoom is worth its weight in gold....

Thanks guys - started shopping for piano hinges. . I'll check your build thread Nick in case you documented your approach - I think I recall seeing it. Not sure you mean about the adjustment mechanism. What do you do about the top false wall panel above the screen, do you remove it when you want to lift the screen up? Since it would interfere with the hinge otherwise.

No, I actually mounted a 2x4 horizontally on the screen wall so back of screen is 1.5" off wall. That way when screen swings up it has room to rotate without hitting wall. Also this makes it easier to level the screen horizontally as if the 2x4 is level just mount the piano hinge across it and the screen should be level also. Not sure how you feel about other pics in your thread so if it bothers you let me know i'll take them down and publicly confess my transgressions.....

I never took pics of the adjustment mech, ill do that now and post it because I think its pretty nifty.

Also looks neat to have the screen stand off wall it kinda looks like its floating.....

Ummm...

well...

you know that thing they say about what happens when you install the projector...

well...

yeah.

I was going to change a burned out light bulb - but I decided to watch Pan's Labyrinth on the new screen instead.

burned out light bulbs are the best cause they don't interfere with the picture quality.

Nick,

I like your hinge idea. I've often thought of how many times I might need to go back behind the screen but even then I think that it's probably a good idea to have easy access behind there.

Brad,

Can't wait to see your screen all put up and done.

Hey Brad,

What type of bulbs did u use for ur lighting to get that wash out triangular effect on your panels?

Thanks Jman - hope the hinges and other needed parts yesterday and started at it, hopefully later tonight will have it up.

The standard bulbs that came with the halogen fixtures: 50W GU10.

Yesterday I finally got around to hanging the screen. I used a pair of 4' long piano hinges from Home Depot. Because the square metal tubing that stretches the fabric sits proud of the wood frame by 3/4", I first added 1 1/2" x 3/4" poplar under where the hinges go. The poplar strips connect to the poplar frame with 1.25" gold screws; the hinge is connected to the poplar strip with the dinky 1/2" long screws that came with the hinges; the other side of the hinge is connected with 1.25" gold screws to 2x3 cross bracing I added to the false wall. Those 1/2" screws seem a little iffy - but there are going into hardwood, and there are a LOT of them (about every 2 inches along the hinges), so hopefully it will be OK, as the screen isn't all that heavy.

I still haven't painted the vertical braces, you can see the reflection from the flash. I'll need to take one of them out, paint it, wait for it to dry, put it back, and then repeat for the second one - so the screen stays stretched. Or maybe I could make a temporary wood brace to keep it tensioned and work on both braces at once.

The faint circle on the left of the first pic is from the camera, not the screen material - tiny raindrop landed on the mirror when I was changing lenses during a holiday trip, and I haven't gotten around to cleaning it.

Here's the screen, under full light:

under low / screen wash light:

hinge detail:

reference screen shots:

more screen shots - 2.35:1:

16:9

stretched 16:9 (zoom to widen, throw away some content on top and bottom) - I accidentally watched some 16:9 this way because the velvet frame eats light so effectively that I didn't notice I was overshooting quite a bit. Not bad depending on the content.

Wow Brad! Stunning! Hey, my screen is on a french cleat, but the thing is so big that I have nowhere to put it when its off! I think your hinges look great, and I'm going to amend mine to be that way. Having it pinned to the ceiling when up is about the most convenient solution.

Screenshots look great too. You're going to be having some fun!
Brad for me to form an opinion I am going to need MORE screen shots........LOL

Looks awesome. The piano hinge idea is perfect and the 1/2" screws will be plenty since there is a few dozen of them. Looks great but the new screen shows me why your MW2 skills are lacking a bit

There you go again, thread padding Brad's...thread and not getting on xbox.
Actually since I sold my projector we only have 1 tv available down there to play on. I am actually sitting down here watching my son play MW2 as I search AVS looking for answers to my column building issues. Where are you on that front???
Screen shots look really good Brad. I had to go back and threadsearch to remember your choice of the ever-popular screen size ratio you went with (what was it, 2.125?). Has getting it set up made you reconsider (even a little?) your current plan for no masking?

Yeah I'll have to add some more screen shots for you for sure.

I went 30-4 and 30-2 in FFA this morning ;-) - the 30-2 was basically 7 kills and then lay in the grass haha (harrier-pavelow-chopper gunner). Got accused of boosting which is always fun.

Oh he was on this morning, I joined his lobby for a while until I got tired of being flashed and rapid fire shotgunned.

Thanks Tony! Yeah that was my concern too - it's not that heavy, so taking it down wouldn't be too bad - but where to put it?? Still need to make some things to prop it open when I open the hood.

I've seen many DE builds with hardwood columns - maybe it's not really big deal (as long as they don't land in first reflection points?). As far as surround height - can you set them up temporarily at the proposed height and test some surround material? Ear is the best judge.

Correct on the aspect - no concerns yet with masking need. Only ones where it's really noticeable to me is on low bitrate rips, where the overall black level is elevated.

Yeah, I love being a little s@#$ on black ops sometimes. I've gone to the gutter with my latest gun setup: FAMAS with grenade launcher, RPG, Flak Jacket...people don't like me on Domination much.

I think I'm finally going to sell Black Ops when I take back Crysis2 and Assassins3 next week. Then again, I saved Halo 3 and threw that in with some buddies when the BOps server went down Thurs night.

What is the next game you guys are getting?
MW2 until November when MW3 comes out then ITS ON!*

*This is assuming that MW3 is better than Black Ops and maybe even better than MW2

Yeah probably MW3 - unless you guys talk me into something else FPS related.

Wonder what this COD Elite thing is - signed up for the beta, didn't research it much. I figure its free, and it will be part of MW3, so why not.
