Pimp My Garage - Page 28

Brad, I've been missing all the fun around here looks like. With the holidays and starting up school, I've been swamped. Looks like you filled up the space behind the screen quit nicely! Those are some fun pictures! The kind that make everyone not into home theater think you've lost your mind!

Glad you're a few steps ahead of me on the XBMC machine too. I'll remember your thread when I need to find all the answers in a few months.

Oops, didn't see this post, sorry - the center is a CHT SHO-10, the L&R (and all surrounds) are CHT PRO-10s. The subs came out really well, I'm very happy with them (well, except when I have to move them around - getting the second one in place was interesting!).

thanks

I'll have to measure when I get home, I don't remember off the top of my head.

Thanks Tony - so far so good with XBMC, although its a pain to get everything "just right". I had a frame dropping problem, which I figured out how to fix; the fix caused a tearing problem, which I figured out how to fix; I seem to have a color space mismatch problem somewhere (0-255 vs. 15-240 or whatever it is - crushed blacks), haven't sorted that yet; and my Harmony remote programming for the HTPC stopped working somehow, haven't fixed that yet. Never ending!

I started building a pair of TLAHs for fun - not sure whether I'll use them in the living room or home office or what, just knew I felt like building some speakers. I'll post some pictures soon.

I have been extremely lazy/indecisive about actually installing the treatments since the projector went up. The downside of having removable panels is that I was able to put them up and make the room useable, and put off taking care of the treatments (well, other than bass trapping). The indecisive part is due to the fact that I only allowed for 1.5" depth, and second guessing based on dialog discussing necessity of deeper treatments. Don't really feel like reworking all the furring strips, etc. though, so I'm planning on using the depth that I have.

How much depth would you recommend? So a person could at least put 2" treatments up?
I always thought that a great bang-to-buck amount was 2" with a 2" gap between the panel and the wall. But that means a 4" loss all the way around that many of us can't sacrifice... Hopefully someone else will chime in with a different rule of thumb.
Yeah, I would have to say that the 1.5 inch scenario is the best for most people. I would suggest using 2 inches at the front andback to make those areas sonically dead as possible. That's what I'm doing.

Brad,
That's why I went ahead and bought the treatment insulation already. So that WAF would be really high and I could just finish it .

I've heard 4" + 2" air space - but I'm not going to sacrifice a foot of width in the room, and I imagine most people wouldn't want to either.

The best way really is to measure the room with REW, and do before and after spot treatment to verify that it does what you want it to do. That's what I plan on doing - after I watch just one more movie. Or two. And play some MW3 in the theater. Oh, and after our friends come over this weekend. Well maybe after I finish the TLAHs I'm building. Yeah then definitely.

^ So on that very subject....have you got your wiring dilemma under control so that you "can" play MW3 in the theater??? Heck I havent played with ya in forever.

Awesome.

Yeah. I'm doing the same thing soon. But I'm going to have to leave soon on a business trip and it'll be a while. I'm not sure when I'll get started on the speakers. I would love to do it soon though.

Yeah, the ethernet to the HT is all sorted out now, have played in there a couple times - sometimes I'm lazy though and play in the living room, if I don't feel like being totally sequestered - and so the family can enjoy my cussing out campers, etc. When I see you online, I usually check to see if I can join the session, but the lobby is usually full. I need to add more AVSers to my friends list, I only have you, Husker, and a couple others on my list.

Friend request sent - will you be my friend? No, not creepy at all. What are you wearing? Never mind, I can see you through the window.

Brad you can add me to your friends lists. I'm ImmortalJman. I've been pretty darn busy getting the theater done though and so I haven't gotten on almost at all lately.

Brad do u have multiple ps3s for different rooms to play in. I've had an installer tell me he can centralize my gaming systems (control4) and I can play them on any screen in the home. But it seems to me that would introduce some delay and not be conducive to on line gaming. So it seems to me I'll need separate systems in the theater with Ethernet hard wired to each. Is that what you've done?
Don't know if this responds to your question or not? but. I use one PS3 in my basement. My Integra Processor does video switching to another HDMI that runs upstairs to the living room. The controllers work right through the floor and walls. So we have one PS3 and two different rooms we can game in.

I'm actually on XBox 360, not PS3 - in my case I bought a separate console for the HT - the HT is connected to a detached garage, not the house, so wiring to the house would likely cost more and be more hassle than just getting a separate console (bought the Slim when it was on sale before Christmas). Sounds like Tony has more experience related to what you want to do.
Actually both answers are relevant. Didn't know the controllers would work that way. So I can hardwire the ps3 run it thru the matrix to all my displays and use the controllers any where. Tony what's the approximate furthest distance? And I'll try it with my xbox too. If this works I can put them all in the closet and run thru the matrix to the displays and the projector in the ht.
My living room is right above the equipment closet in the basement. So when in the living room, we are say...20' or so from it, and that's through the basement ceiling and upstairs flooring.

The kids are playing right now and I just took the controller and walked off into the upstairs bedroom. 45' or so and it still had signal.

Do you have your subs all under control now? Couldn't for sure tell.

I could probably lend you a couple real subs....sealed units...once I get all the parts in for a few years until I get a house built.

Still loving that projector? Saw a great deal for that model on craigslist and almost jumped. Not...sure...where...to...put....it.

Yeah, subs are more or less under control - the real test for me was getting the two subs dialed in to the point that I could deal with the THX "Amazing Life" demo (I think that's what its called - the one with the fat mushroom animation that hits real deep and hard) without digital distortion, when playing back at my usual listening level and a bit above (I usually listen at -13 to -10, so if I can play back anything at -8 or so, its mission accomplished for me).

I could still do some work on the crossover region though, have a bit of a dip there to fix.

I keep seeing amazing deals on projectors and speakers, and get tempted too - have to tell myself that putting a projector, drop down screen, and line arrays in the bathroom probably isn't a good use of resources. Especially since I already have 3 speaker building projects already in the pipeline.

I don't remember if I wrote down the names of the other samples unfortunately, but I'll do some more digging in case I did.

Shameful isn't it. Well, I'm on vacation this coming week, first half out of town, but the second half I should hopefully have some time to work on some things and resurrect the thread from "you hung the projector and all work will cease" purgatory.
^ I know this purgatory all too well. It is where I stand........it's tough to pull yourself out of.
