Just thought I'd share my experience with the 50PK950.
I was originally undecided between technologies but decided that either the Panasonic 50" G25 or the Toshiba 47VX700U was gonna be my next set.
After viewing both, the Toshiba won me over as the Panny seemed unimpressive and aesthetically unattractive (The Toshiba also has a single pane glass look which won me over)
I figured to wait until Boxing Day to see whatever sale on until I saw at a Vizio XVT472SV for sale at Canada Computers for $950 brand new. After reading various positive reviews, I decided to see it.
I went to Canada Computers last Friday and thankfully they had a display model. I was impressed with it's picture while thay played a preview of Tangled on the set.
They only had a few sets displayed but one that seriously caught my eye was the 50PK950.
All sets played the same HD signal and the PK was the only plasma displayed. I marveled at the PQ but dismissed it just as fast thinking that it was in a completely different price range.
While the sales person compared TV sets he wanted me to look at an LG LED and while it looked nice, I commented how difficult it was to appreciate the PQ of the LED or the Vizio I originally went to the location to see because they were all being slaughtered by the LG plasma. It was then that I realized the undeniable difference between the technologies (the Green Lantern preview was particularly obvious as the green was so rich on the PK950).
I asked the salesperson the price (for a laugh I thought) and he looked it up on their site. The display model was the last one they had and was selling for $999.
I was at first in shock but then thought that being a display model it would obviously be cheaper.
I left the store undecided but as soon as I got home I googled everything about the plasma and was surprised to see how positive all the feedback was (I never thought I'd own an LG TV).
Sunday arrived and I couldn't hold back. I kept thinking about the extremely rich colors, the sexy design and the awesome price which was $50 more than the Vizio I originally wanted to see.
I checked the TV again and looked at everything up close. No IR anywhere, no faint image at all. I check the TV hours: 1360. That part I didn't like but the TV showed NO signs of wear, no flaws, nothing.
At the price, I took a chance. They repackaged everything, and left with, what I thought, was one of the best looking TV sets I've ever seen.
After 4 days I must say that this set is just incredible and at the same time a little disappointing, but not because of any fault of the set.
While anything in 1080p looks simply fantastic, 720p does not. I learned something about a native 1080p set displaying 720p and unless I'm missing something in the settings, it's a bit of a letdown. 480p and under, forget it. This tech, like LCD, is made for HD period.
As for IR, after playing a few games, I did notice ir on the top left corner and took a few hours to go away. After playing a movie, it took less time. Pretty much every game will leave some form of IR.
I admit that if I have disappointments, it's also because, other than my PC monitor, it's my first TV set that wasn't a CRT.
My other set is a Panasonic CT-34WX54 34" CRT HDTV and was used to having ANY signal look good on it because as a CRT, it doesn't display the faults with lesser resolutions as much as the LG. ANything 1080i. 480p, o even S-Video looks fantastic still on that set.
Regardless, despite learing something about resolutions, I'm very happy with LG 50PK950. Blu ray looks stunning (My Panny also does great with Blu Ray but this is in another league now) and even the PC looks great through RGB.
I have to get used to the IR issues, something I'm not used to on my CRT, but otherwise no worries or complaints.
Actually, is this display ok for a PC? I'm not interested in using it as a monitor, just to stream movies or play PC games on it.
Since this TV is very susceptible to IR and I've seen it, the PC has me worried but to be honest, it was the main reason I would have bought an LED over a plasma.
Regardless, very satisfied PK950 customer.
