3d Autoview is supposed to help with 3d over an hdmi 1.3 connection. I noticed that when I switched it off, I got more depth and pop and noticed less crosstalk.

When I had it on the default setting (ON), I saw crosstalk in movies where there were supposed to be none (i.e. Open Season). The review on Blu-ray.com stated that Open Season was a reference quality 3D Blu Ray with almost no crosstalk and excellent depth. When I watched it before knowing about the 3d Autoview OFF setting, I thought the picture was flat and saw alot of crosstalk. Last night, I turned the 3D Autoview OFF and was blown away with the clarity and depth of the 3D image. The improvement may appear subtle to some, but I really noticed the difference.

Thanks for the details. To confirm your observations it would be a good test to watch again with 3D Autoview ON and see if you still feel that way.

I'm not doubting your observations however I am skeptical that this feature would have anything to do with HDMI 1.3 versus 1.4 cables. After all, its a digital signal so its either going to work or its not. Can't imagine certain info would be present one way but not the other, or how the info present on the cable could change. Also from everything I read the only difference between these cables is their speed rating.

I would think the 3D Autoview would be something more along the lines of the TV automatically ("auto") switching to 3D view mode ("view") when a 3D signal is sent from the blu-ray player. Just guessing though.

Recently there have been a number of owners here weighing in to say that their TV blanks out for a second or two periodically. One person described it as a "blink".

I've had my PN63C8000 now for about 3 weeks and it is fantastic in every way, except for this blanking problem. It seems to happen within the first say 10-15 minutes of the set being turned on, then usually does not occur again (but sometimes it happens say once every few hours).

As others mentioned, you CAN hear the sound when the picture goes black. It lasts about 1-2 seconds. I do not believe it is a HDMI handshake or cable issue, because in those cases, you would see signs of a resolution or HDMI handshake when the picture establishes itself. However that does not occur. Basically the picture is on and fine, then for 1-2, seconds the picture goes blank (completely black) and then pops right back instantly (no resolution change, no handshake etc).

Since it is happening to many owners, it seems more likely that it can be resolved with a firmware update and not a problem with the hardware (speculating). Then again I've had my set about 3 weeks and this issue seems to be more prevalent now than when I first got it, so who knows.

Has anyone contacted Samsung about this? Their support leaves a lot to be desired, to put it extremely nicely. We should try and organize our complains with the same supervisor so we can be heard as a group and they cannot try and blame things like bad cables, which they are most likely to do.

Night number 2.

I really feel pretty Lucky with this set. I cannot hear any buzz, I cannot see any stuck pixels (although I will continue to look), I have not seen any banding, I have not seen any IR at all, I do however have a slight line bleed ( I believe all plasmas have this)

As of now I still feel like the c-net settings look the best, however I'm not sure I should be using these settings on a TV this new. I still hope someone can offer some break in settings for me.

"Pop" As I stated before this TV looks good but doesn't blow me away. After thinking about this some I might have an answer. My old TV was a 50 inch and the new one is a 63. I sit about 12 feet away. So, I'm thinking that with my old TV any slight blemishes or artifacts while still there they can not be seen as easy due to the screen size. Then going to a TV that is 13 inches bigger it just blows up these artifacts and they can bee seen better. Any thoughts on this?

I watched Dexter last night and some scenes looked pretty good (not quite as sharp as I would like) while other scenes looked washed out.

While cooking dinner we put on the VH1 salute the troops that was just aired and this live show looked great. Crystal clear and very sharp. (of coarse as I'm typing this now I remember this I was in the kitchen so I was farther away then normal. I think even if I was in my normal sitting position it would still look great).

3D. I have not been able to watch any 3D yet. My HDMI cable was not long enough since now I need to run the HDMI from my PS3 direct to my TV and not my receiver. I have placed an order for new cables so I hope to have them soon.

3D from Direct TV. I tried to watch channel 103 - 106 last night and every channel said that my TV did not support 3D TV. So I am assuming that I will need to run HDMI from my Direct TV box straight to my TV and optical to my receiver? Is this correct, can any one help answer this?

Also, Does any one know any other settings I might can try to increase the POP? Kind of wondering if this is something I'll get use too or if a smaller TV might actually look better? My old Sammy 5064 50 inch was looking very good lately. I swear it looks better now then when I bought it.

As of now I kind of feel like I spent a lot of money only for a bigger TV with better blacks. Other than that I'm not sure this new TV is any better or worse.

Yes, I reported it to Samsung UK Technical Support (based in Egypt). They said they had never heard of the problem - and yet I believe others in the UK have reported it to them also!

I see that Samsung in New Zealand and Australia now have firmware 3005.1 listed.

Has this intermittent video dropout happened when watching BD DVD? It seems to only happen to me when watching cable (Fios). Hasn't happened while watching via Samsung BD7900, but haven't watched an inordinate amount of BD yet.

You need a 3D capable receiver or run the hdmi directly into the TV and run audio from the box to the receiver.

Another question.

Should I download the 1032 firmware?

Will this help my picture?

I do not want my set to start turning off on its own.
I too recently purchased this set and I cant say that I'm blown away at all. Im coming from a 3 yr old Samsung (non LED) LCD and I dont really see a huge difference. Some things look really good but other times the image seems washed out. Also, video games dont look all that great either. COD looked a bit better but nba 2k11 looked worse... washed out colors.
Im running my HDMI through a H/K 254 avr.

Went by Ultimate Electronics today to shop for a tv for the bed rooom and found a 8000 sami 50" for 990.00 open box...some guy returned it for a larger model...I slapped a deposit on it to hold it. No bundle or bluray but for the set I thought I should jump on it. Pull the trigger? I feel that is a damn good price on a top quality 3d set. The salesman is also trying to sell me a new hdmi cable for 3d...is this necessary? Thanks in advance for the advice.

upgrade to 1032 (from 1027?) improved my 3d performance a *lot*

i didn't notice any 2d picture quality difference but i'm not a nerd about that stuff so it could have gone unnoticed.

not sure about the set turning itself off - are people complaining that is a bug in the 1032 firmware? i have not had that problem before or after the upgrade. been running 1032 for about a week.

You can get a high speed (new terminology for 3d capable) hdmi cable from amazon for under $10. regarding price, i dont think we can discuss prices in the forums, but thats good price for any 3d TV I think.

If you're going to get an HDMI cable, get one from monoprice.com, or Amazon, make sure it's a "high speed" cable. Otherwise I think you'll be wasting you money, IMO. Also be very careful with open box items, I've had some bad ones.

I have read that the new firmware has introduced a "bug" where the set will turn itself off for a second or two and then turn back on.

I'm almost like "Hummm am I spending this money for nothing"?

I just upgraded to 1032 this morning. Nice doing it straight over the internet.
I hadn't seen any reference to the blackout being a firmware issue induced by 1032...aren't there reports of the issue that predate 1032?
My new cables just arrived from Amazon this afternoon so I can feed optical out of the set to my rcvr.
Still haven't had time to check out 3D...hopefully tonight.

It is a good price for open box but I would go NEW since you dont know what the reason for the return was and especially why it was not taken back by Samsung. I see in my system that they are on promotion right now with free shippint, you are spending more money on new unit and stock goes fast but I would invest in a new one.

So I downloaded the new firmware to my memory stick using the directions listed on the Samsung site.

In one of the direction pictures is shows "6 files successfully downloaded"

However, when I did it it showed 21 files? Is this OK?

Anyone know how many files it should be?

E.

I am very glad you mentioned this. I too have only had this happen while watching TV - never with the blu-ray. Then again, it is only intermittant and I watch probably 20x TV compared to blu-ray, so with probabilities they way they are, its much more likely to happen during TV viewing. Then again it could somehow be related to the source, not sure. Although I can say that someone else reported this I think with DirecTV, and in my case I'm using a Comcast DCX-3400 STB.

Not sure about your question but just a heads up that the firmware on the website is sometimes a version or two behind the latest. Best to download via the online option if you are connected to the net. However they may have updated the web site by this point to use the latest version - not sure, but something to keep in mind.

id have to say to give it a month and keep the pic settings half way to break it in. in a month you should see a big difference. call of duty looks incredible i think. i too have a lcd ( polaroid 46" ) and led ( lg 55" ) and i think this plasma crushes them. led-lcd and lcd have more pop and are way brighter but i like the speed and video processing of this tv. i have the 63" and games are beautiful on this. i also had the panasonic 58" vt25 3d plasma and hated it. give it some time and play around with the pic settings [especially advanced and picture settings like black level(low), black tone(dark) and dynamic contrast(low). when i have black level on low i put brightness at around 80, contrast at 70 and cell light at 17. if i have black level normal i put brightness at 55, contrast at 75 and cell light 15. just something to think about.

I hooked a (500GB Passport) USB drive to our 8000 last night for the first time. Wow, the vids looked good. Especially the HD stuff taken with our Flip. Played with the TV's apps and widgets today for the first time, as well.

I don't have a receiver hooked up yet and was wondering... When watching video from the USB or streamed to the TV, can the TV send 5.1 audio via the optical or ARC outputs?

Thanks,
LB

get the panasonic 3d blu ray player because it has dual hdmi ports in the back. run one straight to the tv and the other one to your reciever. thats the way you get that true surround sound.

Yes if the source is DD or DTS. However by default it outputs PCM 2.1. So you have to hit the Tools button and change the Sound option from PCM to DD (or to DTS, depending on what audio stream it is). I didn't realize that at first but someone was kind enough to point me to it. Otherwise I would have been very disappointed. So I'm passing this along to share the love.

The above works whether you use ARC or the 5.1 optical output. I am using the latest because the HDMI CEC required to get ARC working causes odd things to happen such as forcing my receiver to the wrong input when the TV warms up, resulting in no sound, etc.

If you have Netflix or want to use Vudo or some of the other cool apps its worth it. I couldn't get the wireless part going and while waiting to get a wire run to the TV I wanted to download the latest firmware. So I just moved my cable modem to where the TV was temporarily, then plugged the Ethernet straight from the modem to the TV, then downloaded the firmware, then moved everything back. Was easier than taking the TV to where the modem was. Might be an option for you if you want the latest.

You filed a report with their message takers, err, I mean "tech support"? It is so frustrating as there is no line to anyone technical. I'll file a report tomorrow but will insist on a supervisor before doing so. Just from prior experience with their "support".
