The main reason is smb (windows) share. Built in player requires dlna server.

It supports samba shares and so doesn't require a dlna server (like the Logitech Media Player) or additional software installed (like Plex). I'll play back all natively supported formats in hardware depending on device (see the Market description for a complete rundown).

Because native code & HLS is not yet supported on Google TV, it might be awhile before we see software decoding of more codecs or a Plex-like transcoding solution.

I was just reading about this and it sounds like there is a lot of video and audio support missing from this app on the revue that the Sony has.

People have complained about no dts hd ma support on the revue, since the Sony bluray player hardware is capable of dts hd ma, it seems like dts hd ma should work on the sony bkuray Google tv no prob.

Like another poster replied, samba support is the biggest (i.e. not having to install additional software or rely on dlna). Additionally, GTVBox has support for additional features that some users require like external subtitles and switching audio tracks.

Also, as hard as it is to believe, I don't think that the Logitech Media Player supports all the file types/formats that the Revue can handle. I can't give you specifics because it's something that I read somewhere.

The Sony NSZ-GT1 Blu-ray player with Google TV does have additional codec support. DTS is definitely supported, but I'm not sure about lossless HD audio. I own the Revue or else I'd test it.

Something really weird happened. I put the avsforum app in my dropbox app on my phone and installed it from dropbox on my revue. I opened it up and it seemed to work fine and I was going to post on here from my avs app installed on my revue but I hit back a few times to many and it took me to a screen id never been to before, it said "forum runner" and let me choose from many many forums, all of wich I assume when u open them up look like an app.(not the forum as on a browser). I opened up avforum wich is europes answer to avs. It looks just like the avforum app I have on my phone but says avsforum at the top but it is av forum. Now I can't get back into avsforum or the forumrunner screen. Weird!!!

Personally I like the Airdroid option because I find it easier to copy files to Dropbox using my pc/Mac rather than doing 1 file at a time using Dropbox/Astro on phone (since the latter option is only 1 file at a time). I actually use both options depending on where I am. Nice to have so many ways of doing it!

I have both the the Sony blu-Ray and Revue units. To me the Revue feels so much snappier than Sony with the Honeycomb update.

Thanks for the SlideMe solution, Joey. Works great. For whatever reason, Maxthon is sporadic for me. Sometimes it works and sometimes it chokes with the "landscape" error.

As far as SMB support is concerned, I've had luck just navigating to my PC-based media files using File Expert or ES File Manager (my preferred app) and clicking a media file. You get prompted for the filetype and, if the Revue supports the format, it plays.

And, although it involves the dreaded transcoding, until we have a better solution, I'm using the Subsonic media server on my PC and just playing videos on the Revue through Chrome. Yes, it converts the DTS, but at present it's a good alternative to limited format support (which I fear will not get improved anyway).

So with a 7.1 setup, is it still sending 5.1 in a 7.1 wrapper so no post processing can be applied? (and the same goes for a title with 2.0)

Remote TV viewing is now available for both Sony and Logitech Google TV products.

Google TV had a rough start, but there's starting to be some real movement thanks to an operating system update and a few new apps. The latest to be introduced to Google TV is the SlingPlayer.

Order 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2'
Available from November 11th - December 29th, then it's gone!

They're calling it the SlingPlayer for Logitech Revue - it works on the other platforms so we're not sure why - and it allows you to do the things that you'd expect from a Sling app. You can watch the shows playing or recorded at home from anywhere you have an internet connection.

The SlingPlayer is available as a free download on Google TV now.

Does this mean I could buy this box and put it in a room connected to internet and to a TV that doesn't have a DISH receiver/DVR connected to it and access my Dish VIP722 DVR downstairs via SlingPlayer app (much how I can use SlingPlayer app on my Android smart phone) and play content that exists on the DVR?

I have a SlingAdapter (no longer a Slingbox which I sold) connected to my VIP722.

I just tried a test with my Android smart phone, I had something recorded on my DVR playing back on my TV downstairs then started up SlingPlayer app on my smartphone and selected a DIFFERENT recorded program on the DVR to play on the smartphone and it worked fine. I saw the TV downstairs display "Dual Mode" or some such so I guess it's smart enough to do this if two different recorded programs on DVR being accessed to play.

So it sounds to me if I get this box I could use it much the way I use my SlingPlayer app on my smartphone, right? And that means I don't have to activate the Logitech Revue Dish integration ($4/mo) since I won't use the GoogleTV box integrated that way?

CORRECTION: I'm using the Dish Remote Access app on my Android phone which must be different from the SlingPlayer app which I believe can only be used with actual SlingBoxes, not SlingAdapters, right?? So GoogleTV's SlingPlayer app won't work for me since I have a SlingAdapter, not a Slingbox?

Does anybody know if there is a way to change the Default apps, especially the media player? I have managed to sideload a bunch of music and media apps so far, all of which work well, and a few of which function on an android phone as DLNA/UPNP renderers. These include SoftMedia Player and 2player, both of which support FLAC and some more formats than the stock Sony Media Player, and can do gapless playback.

While these player apps work fine, what I would like to do is be able to playback music on the Google TV unit from my Logitech Media Server via a UPNP control app (bubble UPNP, Softmedia player, imediashare, etc) on my android phone even when the TV is turned off. This actually does work pretty well, but I'm not enamored with the limitations of the stock media player. Is there any way to make it so that when the player is picked as a play to upnp renderer, a different media player starts? I figure the only likely way to make this happen is to change the default app. Android phones easily allow to choose a different default player, but I havent seen any way to do it on the Google TV units (either one) yet.

No, this does not work with the dish sling adapter.

Has anybody try this with their Revue?

I have tried a couple amazon on demand rentals on my review. I can't get over 480p. is that normal?

I need a solution for Google TV/Direct TV 3D.

Unfortunately the Sony Google TV box is not 3D ready, so the only way I can get 3D is by connecting Direct TV > 3D Receiver (Denon AVR-591) directly to my 3D TV (Mitsubishi 82"). I'm trying not to lose my GoogleTV integration for the 95% of viewing I do, but also not have to fumble around switching HDMI cables whenever some worthwhile content pops up on ESPN3D.

Will an 1x2 HDMI Switch work? If so, which one?

Potential Connections would be:

3D Viewing
Direct TV > HDMI Switch (port 1) > 3D Receiver (Denon AVR-591) > 3D TV (Mitsubishi 82")

Non 3D Viewing
Direct TV > HDMI Switch (port 2) > Google TV > 3D Receiver (Denon AVR-591) > 3D TV (Mitsubishi 82")

That sounds like it would work to me, never used a hdmi switch or dealt with 3d and Google tv together but in theory it seems like it would.

You really need a splitter, not a switch. Check monoprice product id 7522.

Am I missing something with flixter via gtv? I cant find movie times...
Quick question: can the revue keyboard act as a universal remote to all of the typical AV equipment that harmony remotes can work (i.e., xbox360 (media center), bluray player (panasonic), Denon Receiver, Panny TV)? If that's the case, i may end up getting one, as it's not all that much more than Logitech's basic harmony remote 700.

What is the difference between a splitter and a switch?

Wouldn't they be inter-changable?

Thanks!

Hello,

I've read the five first pages and the last 5 pages as well. I've seen a rough start for Google TV but everything looks different today.

I have a question for those who currently have a GTV. Would you buy one today over Boxee, Dune, Apple TV, etc???

DO you regret?
For what it's worth, I do not regret buying 2 of them (1 Revue and 1 Sony GTV). If I needed another I would certainly buy another. I like them and use various parts of them every day.

The revue is on my main TV. Used for streaming my media (movies and music), netflix, occasional web browsing, youtube, etc.

The Sony GTV is in my daughter's "toy room". Used for streaming *her* media and netflix.

I'm a music lover. I really want to hook up a SONOS connect to my HK AVR 3600. The Sonos is sweet because I can control it from my Android phone. A NAS would be hook up and music would be available through the network...

Then, I really need to have a Computer plugged in to my TV so that I can surf on the internet, play games, check e-mails, do whatever I need to do. (pretty impossible to do them all on a Boxee or Google TV solution).

I want to get a Boxee or Google TV in order to see some movies, videos...

I wanted to combine everything in a single box, which is pretty much impossible.

I like my Revue, too. It makes a good mate for my Roku XD/S. I mainly use it for the browser, ESPN3 and YouTube.

If I were to buy another box with Goggle TV, though, I'd probably wait for that new Vizio model to come out.
I like mine too. I don't really regret buying it but I rarely use it. I just never found many apps that made it that much more enjoyable. I actually have it unhooked right now because I got a new DVR from comcast. (DCX3501).

I was considering just selling it instead of connecting it back up.

I bought a Revue when the price dropped. Kind of neat, but it never gets used. I now have a Roku2 XD hooked up to it. Far prefer the Roku.

If you want to browse on your TV then the Revue is ok. I wouldn't buy a GTV over any of the players you mention. I feel that Google TV has no future. Of course that could change but Sony appears to be backing away. LG will still be pushing Media Link and Samsung has tons of apps for its Smart TV's.

How good is the Samsung Smart TV comparing with those gears ??

Sony has 2 or 3 (can't remember) devices coming out early summer. Another blu ray player and a streamer like the Revue.
