Any suggestion of graphic card for linux HTPC?

Thread Starter
Hi all,
Looking for using my old desktop as a HTPC with my new HD plasma TV.
I believe the first one I need to upgrade is graphic card.
However, after search around the website, did not get enough information for my need.

My desktop is Acer Veriton 5700G P4 3.5GHz
specification as below
CPU P4 3.4G Hz
Ram: 1.5G
PCI Express slot

I only use this HTPC for AVI or other dvd movie (720P) no blue ray.

I found the Nvidia GT210 was the best suggestion from last year.
I also found some thread said the passive cooler of ATI card has less noise and very good for HTPC.
But I can not found if ATI graphic card works well under linux system.
Any suggestion or advice will be appreciated.

I wouldn't try an ATI card with Linux right now.

The Nvidia 210 or 220 would suit your needs.

Several passively cooled options at newegg, even under $30.

I have the nVidia 210 and it plays 1080p just fine using VDPAU at 11% cpu using Ubuntu 9.1 and XBMC. The drivers installed automatically.

I have a fanless 210

that I bought for about $25 a couple of weeks ago and so far so good. It's in a P4 3.0 system and with VDPAU it plays back 1080p x264 material with ease and little CPU usage (displaying to a 1080p set).

I'd stay away from ATI in Linux if you have a choice.

But does anyone make one that doesn't occupy two slots? Some might be interested in making the most of their expansion capabilities with an internal tuner or some other card.

Also, is the GT220 a significant upgrade over the G210? Depending on your timing, the difference in price could be $20 or $30.

The 220 will allow you to use the more advanced deinterlacers and scalers while the 210 will choke on some.

Here is a great (long) thread comparing performance. The later pages talk about the newer cards:

(there is a 220 on this page)
