Optical through HDTV or PS3?

Hello, I have a quick question about optical hook up. I have a PS3 with the Z-5500 as my surround sound and I am planning on buying the Sony KDL-32EX500 HDTV. Right now I have my optical hooked up right to the PS3 not my tv. But when I get the new tv will I be able (with out any loss of the sound quality) to hook the optical to the Sony? I hear all the time that optical to the tv will down grade the quality of the audio. I dont want that if so I will just leave it hooked up to the PS3 but I was hoping it would so I can use the Z-5500 for my computer, my Oppo and my cable box with out unhooking the wire every time Thanks guys.

Most HDTV's do not pass digital audio from an external input to it's output. Run all digital audio into the surround receiver for surround sound.

If you want TV audio, use analog l/r.

So what your saying is PS3 to HDTV using HDMI then from HDTV to Z-5500 using optical is a no go. shoot

The TV's optical can provide surround sound from OTA or clear QAM HD sources connected to it's RF input. On my JVC the optical audio is dead when any other input is active. My set uses a cable card so all the HD programming I subscribe to from Cox provides optical audio. The L/R audio is active for all inputs. I understand that the optical audio is active from all inputs on some sets.

It depends on the tv, and unfortunately most manufacturers wont list this feature in the manual, so the only way to know is to look on here or ask somebody with the same set.

Or... try for yourself if not clearly stated in the manual.

Unfortunately, most sets will downconvert audio from external devices connected to the TV to PCM Stereo on the optical output. Typically, Dolby Digital is only supported on the optical output when using the TV's internal tuner.

I have never seen a tv that passes the 5.1 through the optical port on the back of it unless its from the OTA tunner

My Vizio XVT does this.
