"My Reel Time" Theater Build Under Way!

Our dedicated home theater build is under way! Actually, we started the addition of our home in late-March. The addition consists of a basement below acting as a garage. The home theater is actually on the first-floor living level off of our current family room. The room above the theater will be a new bathroom for our youngest son, closet, and storage.

HVAC

We found out in February that our HVAC bit the dust and we really needed to replace it. The ductwork was always crappy and the system was undersized for our home. It was a single 5-ton unit running all three levels and just wasn't enough. So, we just went ahead and said "let's move on the addition and get a whole new HVAC system installed at the same time".

The previous system was geothermal with a ground loop, but it just pretty much first generation and we always had problems. With newer technology and reliability, and tax credits from the fed, state, and county, we stuck with geothermal. We replaced the existing single 5-ton unit with a 4-ton unit with three zones (basement, first floor, and HT room) and connected it to the existing ground loop. Two 250ft wells were drilled for the second unit (3-ton) to condition the whole second floor. So in the end, two systems, four zones.

We went ahead and had the drywall ceiling pulled down in our basement and ripped out all of the old ductwork. We changed the layout a bit to have a dedicated workout room and reinstalled all new ductwork.

We are now waiting for the addition to be sealed up and under roof so we can have the second unit installed. No HVAC at all on our second floor, and the Maryland heat and humidity is coming soon!

HOME THEATER

Of course, the big reason for the addition is the home theater. I really wanted it on the first-floor. The layout of our current house allows it to sit off of our family room and behind the garage to the right of the home. The addition will not change the look of the home from the front at all.

The HT will be 18'6" wide by 28' long when finished. There is a two foot air gap behind our existing family room (FR) and the rear of the HT to allow for our FR fireplace, FR closet, and A/V closet for the theater.

We built the floor for stadium seating with 1' drops at each level. So, the back area is 9', second is 10', and the front at the screen is 11'. Viewing distances are 12', 18', and 20'. First two rows will be 4 or 5 seat HT recliners and the second row will be a bar with 4-5 chairs/stools so you can eat and watch.

We will then have a 10' wide cabinet/bar area on the rear wall. There are no windows in the room at all.

We built a 2' extension at the screen end of the HT to allow an AT screen with the speakers behind. I haven't committed to that yet based on my desire for a large screen and AT gain not much above 1.0. We'll see. At least the extension gives me an option without eating up viewing distances.

I'm hoping for a 12' to 13' wide 2.35 scope screen. Scope is an absolute requirement for me.

I'm working with Ted White (THANKS!) on soundproofing and will be doing clips, DD/GG on all walls and the ceiling. The rear wall will get DD/GG on both sides. Doors will actually be heavy 3-0 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 sealed, solid wood doors on the HT side for entrance and A/V closet. I'm trying not to put a single hole for electric or lighting in any wall or ceiling. HVAC and electric will be in side columns to be built on top of wall. Ceiling will have a box-beam/coffered ceiling and I will install the light cans in the beams.

Planning to do a starfield in the center of the coffered ceiling.

FAMILY ROOM WALL

The current wall between our FR and new HT has a fireplace with a HDTV above as our primary viewing area in the home. We have a design for the entire wall from a carpenter for a new mantle structure and doors where the existing two windows are now. We want hide the doorway and closet in this wall as much as we can, so the doors are actually being designed to look like built in wall cabinets.

EQUIPMENT

Don't even have a clue there yet. I'm a spend to where I get a difference guy. I don't mind buying used either. Looking for at least a 7.2 sound system, if not 9.2. We'll see.

Okay, it's a start. Don't know how long it will take since there is so much else going on in the home. I'll try to keep this post up-to-date with photos and logs of my progress. Wife says she wants to watch Christmas Vacation this Christmas. That's a pipe dream I believe!

New walls constructed and ductwork pretty much finished. We moved the HVAC unit from the side of the house (not efficient) to the center of the house. Room in second photo shows new room constructed to hold the new HVAC unit. Very cold house with no heat except for a gas fireplace!

Photo below is of our current family room wall and interior view. The fireplace is gone, and to be replaced with a new and better unit. This entire wall will be a custom wood unit made out of mahogany and stained a warm brown like the furniture you see there.

TV will be recessed in the new wall unit and a Sanus VisionArt retractable canvas artwork frame will hide the TV when not in use.

The window to the left will be the entrance into the HT. The window on the right will be a matching door to the left, for a storage closet.

The ceiling will become a coffered/box-beam ceiling very soon and integrated into the new wall being designed and built as we speak (type).

The drawing from the carpenter was tweaked a bit this morning and he will be redrawing. I'll need all the specs exactly in order to tie the new ceiling design when I build that in June while the wife and kids are at the beach. Better to have them all gone while the room is a mess!

Ceiling fan will go!

Okay, I'm all caught up on the photos I've taken to date. Now that I've created this thread, I can add as I go and keep it current. Let the comments, feedback, and suggestions pour in. AVSFORUM has been a great place to learn over the years, but also gave me a lot of reasons to build this room FINALLY! Thus, the "My Time" name...

Thanks Drew - but please don't remind me of the cost! I'm trying to add so many other things into the build to keep me from saying it was just for the HT! At least labor costs are down significantly, but materials are going up! Ply jumped from $5 to $20 the other week! I'm doing all I can to keep the running total down. Electric and plumbing right now. But that damn custom wall for the family room, combined with a new fireplace is eating big time into my HT equipment funds! I just keep saying, " I'm sure it will look great when finished!"

Gosh, this is my kind of project!

Take heart....if judicious decisions are made, the expense of finishing out the Theater can be quite reasonable. As for the "building" of the structure itself....to really rule the roost over costs often gets a Contractor's teeth to grinding, and can be quite detrimental. Hopefully your man has a good business ethic and understands how saving money along the way makes for a Happy Customer / Builder relationship.

Thankfully, I'm the GC and my brother has been doing all the framing. Things are slow for him in residential construction, so this works out for both of us. I have been doing all of the design, electrical, plumbing, some of the basement tear out, etc.

In the HT, everything is pretty much me after insulation and drywall. After I put up all the clips and channel on all walls and ceiling, they'll come in as I want no parts of drywall! The rest of the HT is mine to build out including all the molding work, which is quite extensive if I stick to my gameplan.

The custom woodwork on the family room wall is probably the single biggest ticket item with the carpentry work, new fireplace, and VisionArt retractable art frame to cover the HDTV above the fireplace. However, that's the wife's part of the whole deal! Got to consider the WAF!

Sorry to those few that might be following my build thread. It's been a busy summer and it never seems like I have time to take photos, download them, and post updates. That being said, I'll post away now and hope to do better in the future!

Shots of most of roof being sealed up. Don't have shots of top, but suffice to say it's about a 3% flat sloped roof. It has a rubber membrane over the entire surface. Hope it works out!

With a full bath above the HT and a sink for the HT, need to run all the plumbing supply and waste lines. Hate purple primer! Stuff goes everywhere it's so thin!

Cleaned up the HT space before I start pulling wire everywhere.

This is a shot of the back wall of the HT. You can see the stud wall that sits off of the existing house exterior wall. The doorway on the left (photo left) is to the space that will be the equipment room. So all the electrical wiring, conduit, etc. for the HT pretty much starts from there. Grafix Eye units will actually be in there also with a wallswitch by the entrance.

Doorway on the right (photo right) is the actual entrance into the HT. There will be a door in that stud opening, then another where the window is now.

Center area sits back and will have two studed out columns on each side with 5' of cabinet in the center.

This is the back of the existing house exterior wall. Opening is where the old fireplace used to be and where a new one goes for our family room on the other side. White PVC pipe is temporarily holding the wires that go from one side of the family room to the other. I have to reroute all those! Thick black cable running vertically down is from our plasma on the other side. That's gotta move too!

Just a closeup of the entry area into the HT. Plan is to use one side of this "hall" to have a ticket booth front. I'll use a motion sensor in that area, so that the light behind the glass comes on, as well as the ceiling light.

Just a clean shot of the HT

The roof is done!

I cannot believe the amount of electrical wire I have pulled just for the HT! The second floor space (bath, storage, etc.) was a snap compared to this. With all the separate zones off the Grafix Eye systems (10), that leads to a lot of pulling.

I ran flex conduit to each speaker location. That's 11 (1 Center, 2 Front, 2 Width, 4 Side, 2 Rear) in total not counting the subs which go below the floor to the front of the room.

Need to clean up a bit! You can see the blue flex all running back to the A/V closet on the left. Grey solid conduit in the top center is running from closet to projector location.

Outlets (one not shown on right) with conduit in center in each riser. Power for seating and conduit for any future runs.

Shot of ceiling and how I did the electrical boxes for each of the lighting zones and remote outlets. The outlets will stick through the drywall and serve as junction boxes to the various outlets/lighting needed. They are 3-1/2" deep, so after clips, channel, DD/GG, they'll stick out 5/8" beyond the face of the drywall. I'll build the soffit all around them before hanging the final layer of drywall on them.

Here you see the conduit for the A/V cables to the projector. Two boxes on the right are for the star field ceiling (one for the stars, another for the "horizon" lighting to go behind crown). Box on left is a remote power outlet for the projector.

Shots of electrical set up in the A/V closet

Fan in ceiling to pull hot air out. Vent in floor pulling in air from finished basement to supply cool air.

The 11 flex conduit feeds for the speaker locations coming into the ceiling of the closet. I'll make a nice trim plate to cover in the end.

For future help, I ran conduit to the basement below and the second floor above, which then connects to the attic. This will let me pull any wire in the future without ripping up everything

Boxes on left are the closet light switch on the bottom, then a thermostat location above to operate the fan. Two four-gang boxes with 12/2 wire running to them are for the two (6-zone + 4-zone) Grafix Eye units. Conduit is to run to wallswitch and lower box for RS-232 control box. Each unit runs off its own 20 amp circuit.

Other side of closet. Bottom box supplying power for the eventual rack. Two 20-amp circuits there. Top three-gang box is remote power to (1 - Family Room Plasma, 1 - Family Room Closet, 1 - HT Projector) so I can hook them up into power conditioner/surge/UPS.
