AP reviews Shrek 3D

This is the type of thing that will kill 3D. Someone other than JC has to start doing it right.

" As for the animation, presenting it in 3-D doesn't add a whole lot. This is not a deeply immersive experience; more often, it consists of stuff being flung at you in gimmicky fashion. After this summer, when about a half-dozen movies will be leaping out at us in 3-D, can the whole trend just go away? Please?

And the frustrating part is, the "Shrek" movies didn't need an added dimension: They already had an impressive visual scheme all their own. The texture of the surroundings that made the franchise stand out among a slew of animated fare the tactile nature of the grass and trees, the water, Donkey's fur gets obliterated when rendered in 3-D. And so in theory, all that's left is the story, but that doesn't reach out and grab us either."

If you believe the forum, the author must just be a 3d-hater who probably was against cell phones, and his ancestors probably were late-adopters of "that glowy, warm fire fad" in the caves of old...

I think he's just another typical consumer who is sick of the hype and the trade-offs in other critical areas for the sake of 3D.

And why not. As I've said many times, innovative scripts will have more staying power.

That makes no sense. James Cameron didn't use any dark magic, he used a standard stereoscopic camera rig. Shrek was done the exact same way (with virtual cameras of course).

Yeah, stuff may be flying out of the screen in Shrek, but the overall immersiveness and depth should be just as good as in other stereoscopic movies.

Throwing things off the screen is a big mistake and makes things look gimmicky. That's why I like Samsung's 2D to 3D conversion - much more subtle with lots of real depth! It certainly has room for improvement, but is a lot less gimmicky than most applications of "real 3D"!

I am old enough to remmember the old "throw it at the audience" 3D.

I was positive they would avoid this at all costs this time around. Looks like I am wrong.

When is the last time you saw a good pie fight ? You just know one will be coming down the pike in 3D very shortly !!

The Three Stooges did the 3-D pie fight thing in 1953.

Producers really need to move away from the gimmick of throwing things out of the screen at the audience. It's NOT the way to produce enjoyable 3D.
Frankly if I wanted to keep ducking and avoiding missiles, I could visit and park, stand in front of a ball game and do so without shelling out ten plus pounds for the privilege.
