RCA vs Optical Confusion

I am confused on the best way to hook up the audio end of my receiver to both my blu-ray player (Oppo BDP83) and Sam B8500 monitor. Question is that my receiver does not have HDMI so in the past I have been using a Toslink optical. What has confused me is with the Oppo player came a disc on how to set up the audio and the narrator ranked the best way to hook up audio from HDMI>DVI>RCA>Coax/S/PDIF>2channel. Should I be using the 6 channel direct ouputs on my HK AVR520 instead of the Optical outs? Btw, both the BluRay and Monitor are connected directly via HDMI but only for the picture. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes

Until you get a HDMI receiver..

Hi mmajoril, since the receiver does not have HDMI Input use the 6 CH Multi analog connection. This way it can play the new codecs TrueHD and DTSHD-MA.

I would just use an optical connection and not mess around with multi-channel RCA cables. The benefit is that you get to continue to use the bass management capabilities of your receiver which are sure to be better than those of your Oppo.

The other major point is that while you won't get lossless audio, the high bit rate lossy codecs present on BRs are nearly indistinguishable from lossless.

Check out this link for some interesting reading.

^^^ agree, I suggest trying both way and let the OP's ears decide .

I hooked up the Oppo Blu Ray via the RCA and wow, much better and "cleaner" sound. Unfortunately my receiver only has one set of 8 channel inputs or I would run this from my Direct TV receiver too. Any ideas on how to do this too would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi mmajoril, sorry but cable box doesn't have analog mult channel, best would be HDMI or Optical or Coaxial cable connection.

TV broadcasts are limited to DD 5.1. So, even if the set top box had multichannel analog outputs, there'd be no advantage to using them. An optical or coax connection to your receiver will give you the best possible audio. Blu-rays have lossless audio, which is why multichannel analog may sound better.
