So, I send this email to Sony Larado (what the heck):
This is to respond to your email I received yesterday.
I am surprised at the cost to repair this flagship unit that I paid nearly $30,000 for. I understand that it is past warranty, but I'm also quite aware that many 004 projectors are failing in the field with the exact same problem, and numerous owners (whom I've been in contact with) have had their units repaired at little or no cost.
When I decided to spend an amount comparable to a mid-sized sedan for Sony's top of the line front projector, my expectation was that the unit would serve me for many many years. And up until the failure of the power board, my expectations were met and I considered the 004 the finest AV product I'd ever owned. I'm also aware that even flagship products from one of the world's leading AV companies could suffer breakdowns. But there appears to be a common issue with the power boards crapping out after 4-5 years of operation, and therefore I find it difficult to cough up $900 for a replacement board.
I propose that Sony consider providing the board to repair my 004, and I'll pay for the labor.
I await your response.
And here's the response from Cesar:
