Curious. How did you arrive at this conclusion.

+1 Everything is progressing nicely.....

Lots of action and excellent character development...

What a brutal murder and tragic suicide.....

started up Season 4 last night...watched all 5 episodes almost back-to-back...much more enjoyable for me...the slow, plodding stories don't feel as slow

as far as this season so far...Valentin Narcisse seems like a concerted effort by the writers to go for a more subdued, cerebral villain versus last season's loud and abrasive Gyp Rosetti...I actually liked Gyp better but Jeffrey Wright is a great actor and I'm curious where this is all headed...the Gillian story seems like the weak link this season but other then that everything else seems interesting...Hoover and Knox seem like worthy adversaries...Richard's story seemed like a different show but I guess they are trying to give him more backstory

the absolute best thing about this season is that finally Chalky, Dunn Purnsley and Capone are front and center and not relegated to the background...that plus no Margaret (but she will be back soon)...Eli's kid in college seems kinda weird but it's been semi-interesting...sad to see Eddie get killed off last night as he was also getting more screen time

at this point the show will never change it's identity...it will always be a show with great production values, costumes, actors but slow moving, deliberate storytelling which almost needs to be watched in 4-5 episode chunks to appreciate more

I think the Frank Capone killing was very close to what really happened back in the day. Of course, I'm sure there was no George Mueller pointing a gun at Al and all, but Frank was gunned down by plainclothes Chicago PD outside a Western Electric plant smile.gif

And how about 'ol George taking a little cocaine to the proboscis to fit in with Al and not piss him off!!! eek.gif

Like Agent Van Alden really needs a little *kick* to get his anger and juices flowing tongue.gif

I said it earlier but the show is a history lesson...most of the characters are real life historical figures and the show almost always follows actual events...some parts of the show are fictionalized such as Van Alden being there when Frank Capone was killed but it's built around history...if you want to know what happens to Joe Masseria, Johnny Torrio etc just Google it

don't know if anyone mentioned it but I'm shocked that the last 4 episodes have featured zero sex or nudity...must be a new record for the show...I wonder if they are making a concerted effort or if it's completely storyline dictated (not that it's ever stopped any HBO drama series before)...I knew something was up when the usual HBO content warnings before the episode airs that show 'Violence', 'Strong Language' etc did not show 'Strong Sexual Content' or 'Nudity' the past few episodes...Boardwalk Empire is not True Blood or even Game of Thrones when it comes to sex/nudity but they have shown their fair share of it

Anyway, also noticing a huge reduction in bobbies. Not liking that.

Was Capone that much of a jerk in real life?

StuJac mentioned it on the last page in a hidden/veiled way....at least I think he was talking about mammaries in his post and not cops..... smile.gif

Yes, mammaries and tushies are missing.

It would be an interesting twist if the show has Van Alden eventually cutting a deal with the Feds to help them build their case(s) against Capone. Obviously he hates Capone.

Van Alden was such a great character in the 1st season and now he's this sort of bumbling, goofy guy...in Season 1 he was the main guy trying to bring down Nucky...he seemed to be very smart and resourceful...now all he seems to be is a joke who is more like a Keystone cop

I agree. As I was watching Van Alden being alternately insulted by one Capone brother and manipulated by another, I was thinking he was a lot more interesting when he was a prohibition agent.

Agree. Where did THIS Van Alden go?

Absolutely right! A male chauvinist pig might say that Van Alden is p*ssy-whipped but that wouldn't be me. smile.gif

Keep in mind that Van Alden is on the lam, a revenoor gone bad. Even when he ironed a new face to that arsehole he was meek until provoked. He's continuing that scenario.....

Which will make his outward explosion even more awesome!!

It's only a matter of time before he goes off...no? And whether that is in the form of bringing down Capone, who as others have noted he can't seem to stand, or it's in the form of being a heavy for the wrong side of the law.

"I do have a sense of humor...."- George Mueller to Capone in the bread truck!

For me, at least, this season is very much hit and miss (mostly miss).

The Good:
1) Nuck is evolving into an elder statesman of organized crime (and SB has NEVER been better in the role).
2) Very little of Margaret.
3) The whole Florida thing...excellent subplot.

The Bad:
1) Who the f_ck cares about the Willie storyline?
2) Jeffrey Wright is being wasted in a character whose fate was telegraphed with the 1st sentence he uttered on-screen.
3) Does anyone really believe Van Alden and Agent Knox would be brought into these organizations without any real screening? Do anyone believe the Capones and Thompsons would REALLY have been that stupid?

From my perspective, this is eye-rolling stuff.frown.gif
When compared to previous years, the writing this year has been not up to snuff IMO.

"I wouldn't put anything alive in a box."

Awwwwkwaaaaaaard. LOL

"Did you squeeze it out of an alligator?"

Slow episode but some well written lines and good delivery - glad to see Richard back with the boy and possibly sticking around based on "He's coming." Not so subtle symbolism there with the boy taking interest in the stars and navigating. "There's Hercules". Indeed.

Tension between male and female characters = eventual hook-ups.

I knew Nucky and Chalky would end up with the new lady characters.

Agent Knox is awesome......
half way into this season and I still have no idea what the overarching theme is...there seem to be a bunch of separate storylines (even more so then usual) with no connection to each other...Nucky's travels to Florida, Chalky and Valentin Narcisse, Capone's story in Chicago, Eli's kid in college etc...the season seems a bit disjointed up to this point...I'm liking the Warren Knox story best but if the past is any indication everything will fall apart in the end due to some crazy twist...the show has told the same story in previous seasons with Van Alden almost arresting Nucky and the same with Esther Randolph

I'm glad to see less Margaret but this is mainly due to the actress being on maternity leave...hopefully the final 6 episodes will be a bit more cohesive

in last week's episode Knox gives Eli a handkerchief with some initials on it...what did the initials stand for?...it obviously got Eli's attention as he might start to suspect something is amiss with Knox...but I wasn't sure what the initials referred to

The initials appeared to be JIM with the I in the middle and largest. I'm sure Eli is wondering why someone who is named Knox is carrying a handkerchief with those initials....

I noticed that too.

Either way, Eli is an idiot.

I freezed that scene and the initials looked like JTM to me...Knox is not his real name so JTM is probably his real initials

Joe Masseria?

Just kidding -that's what I thought at first but then realized it's just supposed to be a hint to Eli that he isn't who he says he is.

I want someone else to read the damn letter in German cause I think he's lying about it and it probably tips Nucky off about him.

Could be.....

J.T.M. is a French acronym / abbreviation for "Je t'aime (I love you)".

Knox said he served in "The Great War", maybe in France- that would explain why he knows German.
