No need to worry...I'm sure she bathed.

What's the old saying..."When the cat's away the mice will play...?" Well in this case I guess it was a bit of..."When the mouse is away the cats will play..."

Meow.....

"You're a flight risk!"
WTF? Eli is leaving on a jet plane? Bad metaphor choice there.

Great show tonight.

And sleeping with his mother wasn't even the most shocking thing Jimmy did with his family in this episode!

Nice catch, although Eli is way too twitchy to trust on bail.

The Commodore was on borrowed time....and Gretchen Mol Rules.

BTW, the whole "Is he or is he NOT dreaming" bullpoop is as old as the hills.
I am getting so TIRED of this plot device...

I'm not sure what you mean? It was obvious they were showing us Jimmy's past in those sequences.

That phrase has nothing to do with airplanes. It is used when someone might leave a situation.

Of course it is but I would wager that this expression was not used at that time.

I had a feeling that he had done that in the past

The point of sleeping with mom was to show the motivation for him to leave the country and join the army. He has mentioned in the past how he was somewhat disgusted seeing his mom in the nude.
no surprise there
they hinted about their incestuous relationship in the first season

Agreed.
Remember the kissing on the mouth thing?

I have to wonder if Mom will have a violent end....and rather soon.

IIRC, there was an early scene where he was in bed asleep or passed out.
Then the cuts back in time began, as though he was revisiting his past while sleeping.

The wife and I were both confused as to what these sequences were from a timeline POV....the here and now, or not.

Yes, and also to debunk (for the audience) Knucky's explanation for Jimmy leaving Princeton.

They also show him using the Heroin sample Lucky gave him. Heroin makes it difficult to distinguish between dreams and reality, it's part of the "charm". I think that they were using the properties of a Heroin dream as a device to both clue in the audience as to Jimmy's past as well as show his motivations for choking his mother and eventually killing his father. It's a nice tie in too because I doubt he would have done either if he wasn't still under the influence.

wow

Jimmy sure had a screwed up family life.
Incest with his mom, which was hinted at. I always thought his mom was, ahem, overly chummy with him, always close, kind of smuggly-wuggly.

Him taking orders from mom, kind of reminds me of serial killer movies, like Copycat, where the psycho has a "mom" thing of some sort. Angela turning to lesbian relationships is just another nail in his coffin for his warped behavior, trying to kill his mom, then killing his father.

The episode made it obvious why he joined the army, expulsion was almost certain and getting away from his mom.

All this made Nucky & Margaret almost seem normal
And if Margaret's not careful, she too could end up feeding the fishes.

And Van Alden finally getting his just rewards! The look on his face was perfect!

Great episode!! The finale should be exciting

maybe, maybe not. He finds out his wife has lesbian lovers, then killed, and mom acts like it's no big thing, sweep it under the rug, plus the knowledge that his mom encouraged him to incest, possibly more than the one time.

That's good provocation for "losing it" even without the heroin. People have murdered for less, jealousy, money, etc. To me it's obvious him joining the army, his life in crime, being buddies with an assassin, being the head honcho in the booze syndicate, was all to prove his manhood. Then finding out he "failed" as a husband - he's over the edge & tries to lash out at the 2 people who he has tried the most to please. I don't think he needed the heroin at all

Underneath turning into a gangster, Jimmy might have had a conscience and could have turned out a bright lad with a future. Under the influence of the corruption & morally bankrupt role models he had, plus killing in the war, probably drove him over the edge.

I believe his mom made a comment to Angela once...something along the lines of "I used to kiss Jimmy's little winky while changing his diapers".

There are so many layers to each character in this show.

And then the maid overhearing what Owen and Margaret were talking about...and then Margaret being unable to admit to Nucky what her "cheating" was. He's gonna blow if he finds out!

Agent Van Alden and his flight from the long arm of the law should be interesting.

I'm still waiting to see what Nucky does to his brother in prison...and what Chalky has up his sleeve to get even with the powers that be who killed his people.

And where and how Jimmy will get even with Manny Horwitz!!! And how interesting Richard Harrow will make that episode

Awesome stuff.

I missed that.
Now it all makes sense.

This was a great episode. It was interesting how they contrasted the major theme of conscience between Margaret and Jimmy's mom. Jimmy's mom might be the biggest nut on the show. I wouldn't have put it past her to try to get Jimmy to attack her to set up his killing of the Commodore. How scary was here demeanor after his death? "Hey you didn't mean it. Things happen." Wow.

I was disappointed to see Van Alden panic. It would have been more fun to watch him squirm a bit. Maybe that'll be next week. However I think he'll take his own life.

Can't wait for the finale.

Hope you're right. He's one of the more entertaining characters on the show. The show could do without Eli who always brings down a scene IMO.

Speaking of Van Alden I thought it was a nice look into his characters genesis when he explained his father/mother's giving away their land because of the expected coming of Jesus.

Explains a lot about the guy!!! And he's stuck in a quandry as far as his view of the afterlife and religious beliefs: He's been stealing...he's killed...he's been an adulterer...yet I wonder if he'd take the easy way out and take his own life....?

Nah, I think he'll go down with both guns blazing!
I agree about Van Alden. The only way he's off the show is if he wants to be off. He could "go all the way" and leave the Feds and work for Nucky. I think he's taken a shine to his nanny. And vice versa.

larry
Van Alden has almost no value to anyone unless he's a federal agent in good standing. As an outlaw he's nothing more than a target for assassination. He knows too much. I think he's gone from the show and a new agent comes in who's more easily bought.
Van Alden is a key character, hard to imagine him being deliberately written out of the show.
However, it certainly would be his style to blow his head off when his back is to the wall.

The actor leaving voluntarily wouldn't be a shocker.
His star is on the rise...didn't he recently get a plum part on the upcoming Superman sequel?
Another route they could have taken with the story would have been if Van Alden when confronted by the Feds with witness accounts of his own murder, was able cut a deal with them presenting surprise meticulous documentation in order to get Nucky.

However it played out differently; conveniently so for Nucky.

I was surfing through the channels yesterday and stopped on Bad Boys 2 and there was Van Alden playing some crazed white supremacist (?) prisoner being stuffed into the trunk of a caddy. Too funny.

Shooting in Australia. BE starts Season Three in Feb or March...and it's a loooong plane trip back and forth from Australia to Brooklyn (where BE is shot).
