Hey Guys! Im new to Home theaters and audio setting and I really need your help here....thing is I bought an Onkyo HTS5100, 7.1 speakers with the amp and all the package...a couple of days ago I changed the front speakers and put 2 towers yamaha ns-50f.

My question here is what and which are the best setting for it to sound as it should? how do i set my amp? i dont have any idea about crossovers settings, or at which db to put each speaker...(between -12 and +12) or how to set the subwoofer or the speakers themselves for the bass and other sounds! could somebody help me with the basics settings? or as much as possible? thanks a lot guys!

Do you have the owners manual? I'd suggest starting from page 1 and read all the way through. Set-up as directed. Go through thoroughly, step-by-step, you'll learn by doing.

The HTS5100 has Audyssey 2EQ for Room Correction and Speaker Calibration. That should handle speaker/sub/crossover settings.

Your receiver has Audyssey 2EQ. Just use it according to the manual and it will set things up for you. If you didn't get a manual, here is a downloadable copy:

If Audyssey sets the new speakers to "Large", try reseting them to "Small" with an 80 Hz crossover and see if you like the sound better. You may actually like the sound of the bass from your new speakers better than the the sound of the sub that comes with the HTIB, but try it both ways and see.

thx guys...i prefer manual settings...for now what i did is set the crossover to 80hz and all the speakers to small...it sounds better...should i leave the cross in 80 or maybe 60 or less?

what i dont know how to set is the dbs in each speaker....which one i need to set higher and which one lower? i mean for example the center speaker is where the voice comes out...it should be +? -? what about the front sp and the surrounds? or should i leave them all in 0?

Let Audyseey do that for you. It *measures* the SPL's of each speaker and sets them to be equal. That is *very* hard to do by ear. If you don't like the EQ that Audyssey invokes, turn that off. And you can set the crossover manually too. As I said, try 80 Hz. But use Audyssey for levels and distances. It can do a better job than you can manually.

There is no "right" number for the above. 80hz is an accepted default number. Change it from 60-100 and pick the best sounding to your ear.

Good to start with speaker levels at 0. You can adjust to whatever levels sound best. Pages 77-81 of the manual explain how to do this. To do this well, you should use an SPL meter, setting the pink noise to 75db (on meter) for each speaker. Still, Audyssey will likely do a better job.
