If you dont mind me asking ISDEC what are your settings as far as brightness & contrast?
I agree that the level on low & brightness at 50 produces "inky" dark blacks. But it crushes the detail for example like on a newscasters black suit. It would just be solid black where when i raised it to black level "high" & turned the brightness down to 48. It remained black but showed the detail and pinstripe in his suit. Same goes for shadow detail. See this is weird if you ask me because i have the exact same settings on my LG 60PK750 plasma as my LE5300 but the black level on "low" on the plasma does not crush the blacks like my 5300 does. I do have the LE5300 model, im sure the 5400 and the 5300 have the same black levels.
I do however on my PS3 have the black level on "low" and it looks better. But i have only tried MLB the show 11, & Fifa 11. I have not tried any games with shadow detail. Maybe this is just a problem with direct tv?
Whats working for me with my Direct TV is this combo
Black level "high" with brightness on 46
Black level "low" with brightness on 58-60
Those seem to give me a nice dark black while retaining the shadow detail. I am using component on the LE5300 from my Direct TV HD DVR because i have the box split with the HDMI running to my LG 60PK750 plasma. I wouldn't think the component would effect the black level on the Direct TV box. I have put the LG pk750 & the LE5300 next to each other and have gotten the same black level with each TV on this setting
42LE5300 with black level on "high" brightness on "46"
60PK750 with black level on "low" brightness on "50"
