Thanks for going through the trouble to post the pic.

Can't say for sure but the layout on yours looks different from mine. I've got my TV out at the camp and I'll be heading there tomorrow. I'll take a better look at what it's got. I know the optical out port/jack whatever it is, isn't like anything I've seen. I called the dealer where I bought it and they said it's got a protective cover or shield over it that needs to be removed. I'll find out tomorrow.

Well I went to camp and checked out the back panel of the TV again. I found the Toslink port. It was partially concealed by the wall mounting bracket. The port that I was looking at was for the RGB/DVI audio in. That's the one that I was mistaking for the optical port.

All is well now. Very pleased with the TV. HD is excellent and I really like the the menus/adjustability etc.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one. I too, was able to play videos just fine before the update on my 47LE5400. avi's, mkv's, all played with no issues.
Whereas after the update to 08.03.00, I'm having the exact same issue as you are. I can select my WD My Book USB drive, but the TV reboots a couple of seconds after bringing up the list of videos. In my testing, Photos and Music seem to work fine still.
Has anyone reported this to LG yet? That would probably be worth a shot.

I have found that this is only happening when the videos are in the root directory; when they are located in a folder, they play fine. In fact, the TV even defaults to inside the folder when it recognizes the thumb drive. I have not gone so far as to check file attributes (like the 448K audio bug, etc.), so I am not sure if the rebooting is limited to certain kinds of video or not. Have not yet plugged an external drive in other than thumbsticks, though.

That's interesting. Mine are located in a folder. I think I will try a couple more tests. I think I should try removing them and see what happens, and also try them from a thumb drive, as you have. We'll see. Thanks for the update!

LG released a software update yesterday that solves the problem of playing videos off a USB drive. Everything now works just as it should.

Interesting--first I'd heard of this. I was connected yesterday in the evening, and "checking for software update" didn't prompt me. What version number are we now?

Bizarre: Checking software indicates that I'm running v08.03.00, which is the same as before. I've no idea what downloaded and installed last night.

yea, i'm with you. I just got checking for updates and then it went right to the netcast apps. I'm still at v08.03.00

Same here, checked for an update last night to no avail. Playing videos off a USB drive is still not working for me.

For those of you who use Netflix..... I had some trouble getting connected to NetFlix the last couple of days. Not sure if this was a isolated issue with just me or more of a global issue, but I received this email from NetFlix this morning:

"We're sorry you had trouble watching instantly

Dear chundric,

Recently you may have had trouble instantly watching movies or TV episodes due to a technical issue on our end.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. If you attempted and were unable to instantly watch TV episodes or movies yesterday, click on this account specific link in the next 7 days to apply your 3% credit to your next billing statement. Credit can only be applied once."

So if this has happen to you, make sure you check your email to see if you can apply the credit to your account. Granted 3% is not much, but this is good customer service. I guess they needed to get back into our good graces with the whole splitting of DVD/Streaming fees.

Had problems as well it was a netflix issue, i also think LG sucks. Had a tech come out to replace my main board, put in the board and half the tv didnt work. Half was fine and the other half was just white. Called lg and going to try and have a new board overnighted to the shop. Such ridiculous crap.

Visit any other forum and tell me they don't have these kinds of problems. LG sucks for you to be sure, but it beats the crap out of anything I've ever had.

Through some various process-of-elimination tests, I was able to pin point what is causing the issue for me. I'll try to explain best I can.
It appears that the restart occurs when the TV tries to display the thumbnail for an mkv file. I can be navigating around in a folder, and as long as an mkv file is not in view, then I can navigate around just fine, but as soon as i scroll over and an mkv file comes into view, the TV attempts to display a thumbnail image for it, and then the restart occurs. There is one thing that makes me curious though: I had one mkv file on the drive before the update, which displayed a thumbnail and played just fine. The mkv files that I have added to the drive after the update are the ones not loading a thumbnail or playing. If I remove the mkv files that I added after the update, then the one that was there before still plays just fine.
So it would appear that the update may possibly have only been a coincidence. Either the update broke some functionality that has to do with playback and initializing of mkv files' and thumbnails but only on files that were added after the update (possible but unlikely)...or...there is something wrong with the files I added after the update (probably more likely).

well from my understanding seems like samsung is a lot better with there tvs. My LG bluray player crapped out after 6months of light use. Then they wanted me to pay 74$ to send it out and get it fixed which is more then what i paid for the player no thank you.

WAOH! Wait, your TV shows thumbnails? Mine has never showed thumbnails. It just has a question mark. It does show thumbnails when I have the external hard drive hooked up to the TV, but not through DLNA...are you talking about when you hook up your device directly to your TV?

I posted about this in the past, but I never found a resolution to the issue. I have a 47" 5400 and I have some lip sync issues. I notice it more when watching standard def, but it is there on other channels. I use an HD DirecTV receiver. When I turn on the the tv at first there is no issue, but if it is on for a while I will start to notice the the lip sync falls off it isn't large, my wife doesn't see it, but it drives me nuts!

This issue also is very present when I use the netflix that is on tv using ethernet. On Netflix the lip sync goes out even faster. I bought the TV in Febuary so it isn't too old. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I would hate to get a tech out and pay for them to tell me it is a cable.

I tried calibrating my 47inch 5400 last night using my WD Live Hub as the source player. I have several MKV high resolution test patterns that I was using that were causing problems. When I went to set set black levels using brightness I was able to get the flashing ramps to match true black, but when I went to set white level using contrast, I never could get ramps to disappear for levels above true white. I even messed around with backlight, thinking that may have an effect, but that did not change things. I have my player set to 8-bit, RGBLow (other options are RGBHigh and YBCR).

What test patterns are people using from a seperate source (ie not the internal test screens)? What am I doing wrong?

Same as you! I have thumbnails only with direct USB connection to my external HDD. No thumbnails over DLNA.

DLNA Confusion

I just purchased a 55LV5400 and everything seems to work great, except DLNA.

I have not installed the nero home as I have used it in the past and found it useless. I am running Plex though. My understanding of DLNA is that it can view my windoes shared folders where I store my video and audio files. The TV does see my computer, but it does not display the folders. My LG BD390 blu ray sees the folders, so why wouldn't this TV?

Also, when I try to start media link, it says that it could not find Plex Media Server. It is clearly running on my computer, but the TV doesn't find it.

Any ideas???

I don't think the ramps for contrast are needed to be disappeared. I use the 709 calibration DVD posted somewhere on these forums for the patterns. I use the ColorHCFR software and my PS3 thru HDMI to calibrate. Most TVs nowadays have great contrast ability. So I think seeing the gray ramps past acceptable white is normal. I try to get my contrast by putting up a windowed 100% white pattern and adjusting to 30-50 ftL depending on the viewing environment for LCDs. Hope this helps...

For anyone following the USB file crashing post- update saga, I did some more trial and error. Using mediainfo I noticed that the mkv file culprits were H264 / 5.1 AC3. so on a hunch I converted them to mp4 with passthrough for the video and a down convert to 2ch AAC. After that the file played with no issues. Not sure if the specific problem causing the TV to restart lay within the mkv container or the 5.1 audio. Will do some more trial and error to find out.

I have absolute horror stories about dealing with Samsung and 3 DIFFERENT model TV's over a period of 2 years so I don't subscribe to that. Notice how I am in the LG thread now.

Mine did as well. Checked Lg's site and of course, they don't have .06 available yet from the site. I didn't notice anything different in Netcast. Some information about what the update was for would be nice.

I've got a mild problem here. There is two movies I REALLY want to watch on my TV (32LE5400). They are Xmen:First Class and Trollhunters. Xmen at the very beginning has people talking German and Trollhunters has the whole movie in a different language. Of course my TV doesn't have subs for these movies when I play them, so I actually went out and downloaded the subs and merged them with both the movies with mkvmerge GUI and the TV STILL doesn't have the subs for the movies. Does anyone know how to get them to work? I'm pretty sure there isn't a button on the TV because I've tried EVERYTHING. Does anyone know of another program of how to hardcode these subs? If not I guess I gotta watch them on my computer that has no surround sound.


EDIT: OK so, I finally got the subtitles on the MKV 720p movie and now the file won't even play, what crap!

Any of you 5400 owners upgrade to another LG LED tv? I own a 42" 5400 and love it but now want to go to a 47" set. Thinking the 5600 series as it looks to be pretty good overall. Comments??
