1. As per OM troubleshooting guide, if the power light is blinking red at 0.5 sec intervals it is may be the speaker impedence (what are yours?) or a stray or faulty speaker wire or connection. Particularly suspect are the tightly packed connectors on the back of the AVR. Is this an open box unit? I would consider resetting the microprocessor if we can't get this resolved.
3. Check that the correct antenna is connected to the correct posts.

Ha-ha, jd is beating me to the answers again!

...

You're probably right, those look like junk cables. Inexpensive but reliable cables are available from forum sponsors Monoprice (and also Blujeans), see the top of your page for links. For today, you may have to hit radio shack or BB. I would buy as short a cable as will easily do the job.

Quite right. I neglected to mention that we soldered RCA plugs to the ends of the speaker wires. I see now, that was a waste because unpowered speakers need to attached to the back sur posts and set to "Amp Assign=Zone2" Hopefully, this will solve the issue, but I still want to know why the menu item "Zone 2setup", which is Menu # 44, does not appear either in OSD or GUI menus?

Hi.
Is the Anchor Bay scaler on the 1911 the same one as on the Oppo BDP-83?
If not then does anyone know which one has better scaler the 1911 or the PS3?

Thanks for the replies. I am going to go and buy some new HDMI cables today (what a pain... anyone know of a good place to go in the West side of the Greater Toronto area?)

I am still having a problem though. The stereo seemed to work for the Xbox (as I mentioned yesterday) and everything seemed fine last night. I turned it onto the Radio today and it seemed to work. Then I pressed the play IPod button (which worked last night) and the power cut out again. The light is flashing again (maybe its once every second or two)

What's up with this? The speaker wire is in there extremely snug so I don't think that should be an issue. I have an old power bar that I'm using for this and pretty much everything is plugged into it (TV, receiver, Xbox, Ipod Dock, CD player, Blue Ray) is it possible that I'm overloading something here? Do I need to get a better power bar?

I'm starting to get frustrated and I don't want to have to return this receiver only to find out that I get the same problems with the next one.

Where's the best place to get a deal on a Denon 1911? Is Electronics Expo the place? $410 is the price I got from them but didn't really want to spend more that $375. That is what I sold my old AVR for since this is for the office only.

No, it's the lower level ABT-1030 chip (this chip is used in the Denon 2010 Blu-ray player). The Oppo 83 and the 23xx/8xx Denon models (and up) use the ABT-2010/2015 chip.

try it both ways and see; if you can't tell a difference, that means you don't need to waste time worrying about it

No offense, but I would certainly hope that home theater setups aren't part of your usual day job.

Unless Amp Assign is set to Zone 2 then the menu item Zone2Setup won't appear as listed on p. 58 of the Owner's manual.

So I called into customer service today, he told me it could be the speaker wire. I went out and bought new hdmi cables (which I needed anyway) new speaker wire (25 feet for 5 bucks) and a new surge protector.

Came home and started experimenting. Still having the same problem. The unit keeps powering down. So, I started removing cables to see what the cause is... I removed everything but the power cord and it's still having issues.

So I guess I got a lemon?
As SOM indicated, it's important to note whether the red power ring is flashing every 1/2 sec (amp failure) or every 2 sec (poor ventilation). If no ventilation issues, then yes, it's likely you got a defective unit if it's still shutting down with absolutely nothing (no sources, no speakers) connected to it.

In addition to jd's comments, I will again suggest a reset the microprocessor procedure. If that doesn't work, it's time to make lemonade.
The prolem is now solved! Thanks to jdsmoothie and also to batpig, whose FADQ guide helped quite a bit. See you soon, but not too soon!

Does the 1611 have identical sound quality to the 1911?
Isnt the 1911 soundwise just a 1611 with two moore channels and moore power?
read the 1st post of the 1611 thread where I list the exact difference: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt....php?t=1252688

1611 and 1911 are both 7.1

Im a little confused with terminology and HDMI features...I simply want to be able to turn of my Blue Ray DVD, then my Denon 1909 and the sound go thru the TV again..The 1909 does not go "Go back" to TV when in stand-by but maintains the last HDMI input such as the DVD, unless I change it back to TV before going into the Stand-by mode...Does the newer 791/1911 do what I would like to accomplish with the "ARC" ability...??

correct, on the xx09 models the "pass through" feature only works with the last HDMI input. On the newer (xx10 and xx11) models you can designate a specific HDMI input as the "standby source".

ARC is a whole 'nuther thing.

Hello from a new guy. I recently purchased a Denon AVR-791 receiver and Sony S570 blu-ray player. I have cable and blu-ray connected to receiver via HDMI and receiver to tv via single HDMI. Everything works great except the blu-ray menu and any online content accessed via the blu-ray (netflix, youtube etc.) has constant video static. If I connect blu-ray directly to tv via second HDMI thus bypassing the receiver, there is no video static anywhere. Playing a blu-ray movie through the receiver oddly enough does not have static once you leave the menu. Any thoughts on what could cause this?

Hi

is there anyway to dim the display on the avr 891 from the remote

thanks
I thought the european models were the same spec as us models.
My mistake.

Hi tommyboy1970, the remote has no button to dimmer display. If you have a Harmony remote you can download Batpig's Denon AVR Harmony Command List which may have this feature.
Thanks JChin

I do have a Harmony One but looked at the codes and it doesn't seem to be there
post #1524 of 4863
I returned the receiver and swapped it for a new one. And the results are...

Great.

Sound is great, it's easy to navigate, video is very good. I'm happy with what I got. I also love the fact that commercials no longer blow us out of our seats with the volume difference.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to answer my questions, it was appreciated.

ok guys was thinking of jumping ship to a onk 608 so here is my situation
HEY guys need your opinion.Iused to have a denon 1906 but wanted to upgrade to hdmi etc.Ive been very happy with the denon for sound qyuality .here are my speakers
cinema 220 - front left and right, cinema 330 - center, cinema ADP - surrounds, ps-1000 - sub.
my local dealer has a denon 1911 I looked at,and also this onkyo 608.pretty well the same money after my denon trade in.after looking at everything Ive decided to jump ship and I bought the 0nkyo.I havent hooked it all up yet but was wondering if i made the right call lol.is the onkyo going to sound as good as my old denon 1906 did?I bought thre 608 cause it has alot more hookups as well abit more watts. He said that if i wasnt happy i could exchange it for the denon 1911.Ive read most of this thread but still would like your opinion on my choice.also id like to ask if my speakers are good enough but that will be for another forum i guess.any comments are appreciated,
or would i be better off with the denon 1911?
I would take the Denon for two reasons:

1) full Audyssey MultEQ instead of the base level 2EQ on the Onkyo. This is a big difference as 2EQ uses low resolution filters and doesn't EQ the subwoofer, which is the most important part.
2) much better video processing (check out the Onk owner's threads as there are issues with video degradation when trying to use the GUI)

the 608 definitely has more inputs and options, a nicer GUI, THX certification.... that's kind of Onkyo's strategy (stuffing a ton of features and option into one box for a low price) but I think at this entry-level the Denon offers a much better "real world" package, mostly because of the full MultEQ.
yes iam starting to regret, would i be able to tell the little difference in power that the onkyo has over the 1911, is the 1911 95 watts? cause i think this onk is 110? I dont want any video degradation as this is why iam going to hdmi in first place,I might be running this 608 back to the store and grabbing th 1911
post #1528 of 4863
you already have it, why don't you hook it up, play with it for a few days, and see how it sounds and how you like it? Your own personal, first-hand experience will be a million times more valuable than some speculation from random people on the internet

ignore the power specs, they are misleading. You couldn't hear the difference between 90 and 110 watts anyway, even if that was accurate.
I called up the shop and he is sold out of the 1911, and too boot he sold my 1906 already lol .so I asked him now what as he gave me a choice of geting my old amp back if i wasnt happy with the 608 or takeing the 1911, so he said that he will take a hit and charge me a small bit and upgrade me to the denon 2310! he said i will be very happy with that amp. do you thibk the 2310 will do the job? I just had denon for so many years i hated to switch, but iam sure i will be happy with the 2310
post #1530 of 4863
The 2310 although only being HDMI 1.3 (ie no 3D or ARC) will offer the same version of Audyssey MultEQ as the 1911 and will also have an upgraded video chip which will allow for displaying a nicer GUI (rather than text based OSD) over the existing video display. Although before you pay more for it, I'd check around at your local Best Buys that still have them on clearance as they are going as low as $200 with the 3310's going as low as $400.
