*Official* Denon AVR-1911/791 & AVR-2311CI/891 Owner's Thread - Page 95

I finally know what brand receiver I want. I have looked at the different brands and considered different models from those brands. I got hung up on some things I read and was concerned about some things that I didn't need to be. I also realize I need to get one home and set it up and listen to the sound knowing where the settings are. I want to thank everyone for their input. I know I want a Denon now I just have to be sure which one. I know choices are personal when it comes down to sound and what is worth what but I would like to ask, is what the 2311 offers over the 1911 worth about $180.00 in your opinion?

Thanks

^^
It's only worth it if you feel you need those features the 2311 offers that are not available on the 1911. Review post #3 in this thread for the differences between the models.

Yes I read that and I have questions. An independent dealer told me that the updates on the 2311 are done by usb but it is very difficult to do, so much so that you really need to have it done at a service center. On the 3rd post in this thread it says updates are done through the RS-232. Which is correct?

Are the color GUI menus available over HDMI on the 2311?
I found out the GUI is available over HDMI

Have you tried using the 'Search this thread' function at the top right of every page in this thread? Try searching 'gui' and you'll have your answer.

Excellent. The search shall provide you with 99.9% of answers to your questions.

Although 23XX models are designed to be firmware updated by service centers only, on the previous 23XX models, Denon has provided me with the updates to pass on to AVS member owners (ie. they are not readily available to the average consumer). Although there are currently no updates for the 2311 (and none expected as the 2312 will be released in a few months), if there were one, it would be updated using the RS-232 jack.

Howdy! Love my new AVR-1911. However, I've noticed while it is on standby and we watch DirectV via HDMI on older Sony KDF-E60A20 LCD the video and audio will drop for about 30+ seconds and then slowly return. The picture returns gradually starting with muted colors. Sometimes sound returns first, other times video returns first. We haven't noticed this problem while the receiver is "on" yet or using the PS3...I've replaced HDMI cables from DTV to AVR and AVR to TV, but no change. I thought perhaps the LCD bulb was going bad, but the audio issue says otherwise. Any ideas? Thanks!

First try it with the AVR 'ON' and see what the result is.

I just ordered the 1911. I liked the better color GUI over video of the 2311 but felt it was not worth the price differance. I felt I did not need the other improvements. But it is up to you.

Do not wait too long. The 1911 price just droped and I expect the new models are coming soon where it will be hard to get a good discount. I made the mistake of taking too long in getting new speakers. By the time I was ready to order, they were out of the 2010 models and I had to pay big bucks for the 2011 models.
What speakers did you get?
I was thinking of that. Wanting to wait for the best price but realizing if I get too greedy they could all be gone. I am thinking the same thing. If I look at the 3rd post and consider the differences that would matter to me I am not sure it would be worth it either for the 2311. OneCall has a good price for this weekend and Stereo Advantage is actually a hair better for the 2311.

So far...the problem doesn't seem to occur while the receiver is handling the sound for DTV. Thoughts? Thanks!
I called JR to see how low they would quote over the phone and that is only if you are going to place an order they will work on the price.

This is off topic but:
I got the Infinity Premus 2x P363, PC351, 2x P143, and PS38. Last year models were cheaper but they seem to be sold out now so I got the 2011 models. It is a long story why I pick Infinity. It was partly because I have 2 of the vantage Infinity Reference Studio Monitor with EMIT. I know Infinity is not the same company it was back then when I got the old speakers.
No, but Infinity is STILL a fine brand. And it is not "prEmus" but rather 'PrImus'. Also, I think you mean 'vIntage' and NOT "vAntage" since it is an entirely different word with different meaning.

I stand corrected.

Ok, now I am getting really bad lip sync issues with the 891 playing anything from my ps3 including nexflix, vudu and movies. I tried turning lip sync on and off and nothing works. Anyone have this problem with their PS3?

Last night was the first time playing netlix and a movie through the PS3

I was having handshake issues with DTV and my AVR 891 similar to yours with the sound and picture so I just bypassed the avr with DTV and went directly to the TV and works 10000 times better. I just use an optical cable for sound to the receiver.

On the PS3, set the to OFF. Then on the 891 set the setting to "Game" (p. 47) as well as adjusting the setting (p. 54) as necessary.

Hi fellas. I have a Ps3 hooked up via hdmi to denon receiver. Also have a Logitech Harmony One remote that turns on devices or switch activity to "Play PS3". Problem: When I switch activity to "Play Ps3", the video displays correctly but no sound is available until I turn receiver off and on again. Any ideas why sound for PS3 won't kick in unless I toggle the power on the Denon? Otherwise works perfectly

Try connecting the PS3 to each of the other HDMI inputs on the AVR to see if you get the same result. You also may want to try replacing the HDMI cable as well. In some cases, in order to make a successful HDMI handshake, the devices must be turned off and turned on again, TV, AVR, then PS3/source.
Thanks. I only have one HDMI input on the TV. Not sure how to handle the PS3 AND DirectV connection as you described bypassing the AVR 1911 with DTV and use optical...I watched a movie on DTV last night using the AVR providing the sound and it was without problems. This sounds to me like a problem with my AVR...right? Thanks.
^^
I was suggesting you try connecting the PS3 to each of the HDMI inputs on your Denon AVR (not the TV) to see if one of them works better than the one you're currently using.

I was in the market for a new AVR around this time last year and almost pulled the trigger on a 1910 or 2310, but was lured away by the bells and whistles of the Pioneer 1120 and bought it instead.

The Pioneer is solid and it does almost everything perfectly, with one fatal flaw (for me anyway) - it doesn't handle setups like mine very well that have both A and B main speakers in the same room. First, there is no subwoofer output when selecting the B speakers. Second, the only way to switch between A and B is using the speaker selection button on the receiver. So I'm not getting the best sound from my B speakers and the ease of use when switching between A and B is not there.

Here's the functionality I'm looking for:

Select Tivo/CD/AppleTV input and the AVR automatically:
1) switches audio output to the B mains + sub
2) switches to stereo output and downmixes multichannel input into 2.1 output

Select Blu-ray input and the AVR automatically:
1) switches audio output to the A mains + center + L/R surround + sub
2) switches to 5.1 output

I understand the 1911 made some changes in how it handles A/B switching compared to the 1910. Can the 1911 handle the A/B speaker functionality I'm looking for or do I need to move back to the 1910 to do it?

JDSmoothie...thanks for clarifying. In the process of experimenting I finally bypassed the Denon and connected the DirecTV via HDMI to the TV with a different cable. Within minutes of powering on, the screen went black and sound vanished. Picture returned gradually after 60 seconds and sound about 5 seconds later. When I hit the jump back button on the remote the DTV replayed what I had missed while the picture and sound were missing. Hmmm. I'm relieved my new AVR 1911 isn't the culprit, but now must determine if my DTV HR22 or 60" Sony have the problem. Any thoughts? Thanks as always!
I would say that if you connect another source to the TV directly and get the same result, most likely it's an issue with the TV.

Just set up my new 1911 last night and ran Audyssey.

Everything looked good, but it set my fronts (Polk R50s) as large even with my sub hooked up. I popped in Master and Commander and it sounded really nice, and I seemed to get good action from the sub, so I'm in no hurry to change anything, but I thought I had read that you generally set your speakers to small if you're using a sub?

Would that give me a better sound? (I realize the best way is to listen for myself, but just wanted to know if I was mistaken about the general rule of setting speakers to small with a sub)

^yup, try it.
