Anyone can recommend a good place to shop for the 791/891? I see it on amazon but full-price. Or maybe its still early thats y? Thanks

I am in a similar situation to yours. Have the Pana 65VT25 plugged into the Onkyo 608 and the Directv 3D issue (having to manually set side by side on the TV) is pretty annoying. I've read that the Denon does not have this issue and passes the signal correctly -- that is the VT25 autmatically switches the 3D mode.

I'm thinking of the 891 or 2311 (so I can do firmware updates myself) to replace the 608 -- the BIG question is does the 891/2311 pass the 3D signal from the Blu-Ray players correctly -- without having to manually set 3D mode on TV?? Thought I read somewhere that someone had an issue with that.

Any insight on above is appreciated. Oh, and also a good place to buy the 2311 -- is it even out yet?? Thanks.

Hey buddy:

Yes i am waiting to see if anyone has tested the Denon with regular 3D player but noone has responded. I was hoping someone named Craig would reply...

I have not seen the 2311 avail. Only the 891 (amazon)

Let me know what you'd do. We're in the same boat! I need to act fast since my Onkyo is almost 30 days old.

The Onkyo 508,608 do not pass the data correctly and the VT25 tvs will no go into 3d mode automatically. Its unbelievable how onkyo screwed the pooch on this one..

GO Denon !!!

My Onkyo is 14 days old so I have a little time -- if Craig or anyone else can confirm this then it would be a no brainer to switch to the Denon. Thinking about it anyway but having to set up and rewire everything again is making me think twice! Let me know what you do too. And PM me if you find a good dealer for these Denon's

Hi just a quick question doe the Denon AVR-891 have the option to leave the reciver of and still recive single from HDMi like the Onkyo thanks
post #337 of 4863
Yes, all Denon AVRs offer the HDMI pass through option when the AVR is in Standby.

Good question -- I'd like to know too. Does it do HDMI passthrough when on stand by and if so, which input does it give priority to? If I have Directv and Blu Ray connected to the Denon with HDMI passthrough enabled, will it automatically pass the signal through when on standby if any one of these connected components is on? Waht if both components (Directv and Blu Ray) are on? Thanks.

This only works with the 2311 as the 891 does not have a RS-232 jack.

There are two settings ... either the LAST HDMI source selected before the AVR goes into standby, or a specific HDMI jack.

Lots of folks find this to be the case and simply bypass the AVR (which is also why we always say choose an AVR for it's "audio" ability and not for it's "video" ability). If you find the TV (or the blu-ray player) does a better job of upscaling than the AVR, then simply turn the i/p scaler to OFF and let the video pass through.

Yes the 891 has HDMI passthrough when receiver is OFF (Standby). With HDMI Control set to On, you have a Standby Source choice setting of either Last HDMI or HDMI 1,2,3,4,5 or 6 (it can not have multi choice).

Thanks for the responses guys. Good to know. Sounds like the 2311 is the one for me to replace the Onkyo 608 -- is it out yet? Also, do any of you guys have 3D sets connected to this or have tried 3D on it yet? Thanks.
The 2311 is due out by the end of the month. Sorry, no interest in 3D.

You'd have to either deliver it or ship it off to a Denon authorized repair facility on your dime (although not all of them can do firmware installations so you'd have to call to confirm before shipping unless shipping to the factory warehouse facility in NJ). The repair facility would then install the firmware and ship it back on Denon's dime.

Thanks jdsmoothie So looks like i might have to go with the 2311c1 then just need to find out who sells it in canada
post #348 of 4863
As long as the price difference isn't that great for you, the 2311 would be my choice for the firmware update capability alone (the 2310 is already on it's 3rd update). Use the "Search This Thread" button in any of last year's Denon model threads using the keyword "Canada" and you are likely to find some Canadian vendors used. If you're close to the border, some folks have had it shipped to a PO Box on US side and then drove over the border to pick it up as the vendors most often used in the US (Electronics Expo, 6Ave, J&R) don't ship to Canada.

look i paid 1600 for my yamaha htr-6290b so as long as the sound is clear and crisp then paying 1000$ is well worth it

I can get the 2311C for 780$

I ordered an open box 891. I felt the ability to tweak video settings and the OSD overlay are probably worth the money. Hopefully the video setting ability is worthy whenever I hire a calibrator.

I received my Samsung BD C6900 player last night. My tv comes in today with 3d glasses. The 891 comes in on friday. I'll try out the 3d pass through... it better work because that's why I bought the damn thing. Though owlish did say ACR works how I wanted it to (blu ray -> tv -> sound back to AVR) so that would clear up any possible pass through issues, but will it pass Dolby HD or DTS MA?

I'll let you guys know about the 3d stuff on friday/saturday.

I have read everything that has been written. I also have the TC-P54VT25 Panasonic Plasma. I was all set to buy the Onkyo 608 but since everyone here says that is will not pass my Directv 3D properly then I will be buying the Denon 2311. I am buying Denon because they are the only one that still have a couple of Svideo connectors so I can hook up my Pioneer HLD-X9. Pioneer (except Elite but they dont support 3D yet), Yamaha and Onkyo have chosen to dump Svideo. It will be interesting to see what a laserdisc looks like upscaled by the Denon to 1080p!!!

Does anyone see any downside to the 2311? No THX but I dont think that will make a difference

Does anyone when and the best price for the 2311?

Thanks for all the info in this thread! All good info!

Bill

For that price you may also consider Pioneer VSX-1120. Pretty close match on features, but has THX. Not sure about S-Video though.

If will have Marvell/QDEO video processor, previously only available on top of the line Elite model.

It is too bad that neither is avaialble yet.

Believe me you won't use it, I have laserdisc and it looks like crap on a big panel upscaled to 1080p, DVD and cable tv, look 1000% better and bluray even better still. Once you compare all the choices you have to watch, laserdisc will be the last one or next to last, VCR being last. I only use Svideo to my DVD recorder which my 1909 will down scale HD cable movies and I can recorded them to DVD, it works good.

Looks like Crutchfield has the 2311 and the 3311 in stock, but the 1911 is still preorder.

Highdecibels says that have the 1911 in stock.

So tempted to buy the higher end models, especially if I can get no interest financing (like at Best Buy).
Keep in mind that you'll want to purchase from a Denon Authorized vendor or e-tailer unless planning on picking up a 3rd party warranty (eg. Squaretrade). Crutchfield doesn't generally discount too much, although regardless of the vendor purchased from, you'll generally always want to call in your order to see what the true sale price is (other than the MSRP listing on their website). The new Denon AVRs are likely to be discounted at least 15-20% off MSRP at the etailers (Electronics Expo, 6Ave, and J&R), if not immediately, then surely within a couple weeks.

I wonder where our friend "Craig" is now. He seemed very enthusiastic about Directv 3D issue but not as much on the bluray player 3D test???
If you're in that much of a rush, you could always just call him at his place of business as listed in his sig ....Theatermax LLC ....
Well im rushing because i cannot return the Onkyo after June 27th.

I plan on making a trip to local BB this weekend to see if the denon works for bluray 3D, however. Also someone else here has said he'd provide feedback this weekend once he got everything (on shipping i think).

Well I just bought the 891 and I have it connected to my Samsung. When I turn to channel 106 on my Directv receiver I get the side-by-side image, but the TV does not automatically activate the side-by-side 3D mode. I have to manually activate side-by-side. I think this is the same issue as with the Onkyo receivers.

I don't know what the real issue is on the Onkyo receivers, but I think the Denon suffers from the same thing. Could you explain the issue a little more?
