Just bought a AVR-891 today. Got it for $399, free shipping/tax... seems like it packs a ton for that. Hopefully it will last better than my Onkyo 606 I'm replacing that heated up like an oven and slowly baked the hdmi board. While it worked, it was a decent receiver but a terrible design, I'm through with Onkyo for awhile. I've had a Pioneer, Sony, and an Onkyo, but never have had a Denon...hoping they are quality.

I'm looking at the 891 because of the great price on it but can someone clarify if there is a bluetooth option for it? If not, which is the closest Denon feature-wise that also has a bluetooth option?

None of the Denon AVRs offer a bluetooth option; however, the network models 3311/991 and 4311 (or this year's 1912 and higher) can be operated via iPhone or other smart phone.

I just bought a 791... everything seems to work fine except the Audyssey auto speaker detection feature: after I started the test the AVR simply cannot detect the left front speaker even though I can hear the test tone from the LF channel.

I checked the connection and the L and R front speakers are connected properly. I tried another Audyssey microphone from my Integra pre-pro but I got the same problem. The 791 can start the auto test when I plugged in the microphone.

Any idea? Any suggestion on what I should try? Thanks.

I'd try a reset the microprocessor procedure. It's described in your OM (see table of contents or use search on downloaded PDF version)-watch for the FPD flashes to be sure it "takes".

I did tried the reset but it didn't help May be the microprocessor didn't "take"? What do you mean by 'to be sure it "takes"'? Thanks.

It's a feature I'd really like to have (bluetooth, networkable, and/or AirPlay... I just want to wireless stream my music) but I don't know if I can justify the significant cost increase just for that one feature. Dilemma...

^Quad, I should've said, it is a tricky set of button pushes, so note the FPD flashes to be sure the reset has been successful. The sxms initially pointed to a bad mic. Assuming the Integra mic is the same model Audyssey mic, it now seems to be an AVR issue. The AVR recognizes that there is a setup mic plugged in but has a problem processing the signal at some early point in the chain. Reset did not cure the problem so the next step is calling Denon CS in the am.

The 1912 (MSRP $529) just released last month is both networkable as well as includes Airplay.

The front panel display was indeed flashing so I guess the processor has been rebooted/reset

The Integra Audyssey mic looks the same as the Denon one except for the colors so I supposed they are the same model and it is working.

Guys,

I could use your help (hoping I'm in the right forum). You've been very helpful in helping me w/ my 1911 and now I need you to put a shopping list together for me.

This weekend, I got an iPad 2 and would like to use it as my portable music device (among a ton of work stuff). Here's what I'm trying to accomplish:

1) Find music on iPad
2) Hit play on the iPad through iTunes (regardless of where I am in the house)
3) Listen to music through my entertainment center or outdoor speakers - without having to hit remote for 1911 or TV (unless to turn up/down volume).
4) Get sick of music, hit a different track, and repeat.

What I'd like to know is a) can I use my iPad 2 as the controller for music wherever I am within my router's range, ie stream it over wifi with all controls over music selection being through portable ipad and b) what product(s) do I need to buy?

I appreciate all the help. Hope to hear back soon so I can put together my "grocery" list of cool new gadgets.

Yep, it's between the 1912 and the 891 at this point. Just weighing whether or not it's worth an extra $130 for AirPlay (as that's the only extra feature of the 1912 that I'd be interested in).

This is easy provided the computer with iTunes is connected to your 1911 and the computer and iPad are on the same wireless network. On your iPad, goto the app store and download and install "Apple Remote". Once the remote app is installed, open the app and follow the instructions to have the iPad and your iTunes computer wirelessly connect. Once they successfully sync, you are in business. You'll have control of your iTunes library and be able to control the iTunes volume through your iPad. I do this all the time with my iPod Touch and it works great! Hope that helps.

Either that or if the OP doesn't want to connect the PC to the 1911, just get an Apple TV 2 and connect it to the 1911 instead and then stream to the ATV2 from the iPad or PC.

Thanks for the great responses. My PC isn't connected to the 1911, but the Apple TV 2 looks interesting - though I'll need to get a DAC as it doesn't have analog outs (for zone 2 support).

The ATV 2 is actually even better than the Airplay feature offered as an upgrade to the 3311/991 and 4311 or already installed in the XX12 models, as it can both stream video as well as independently play to Zone 2, neither of which the Airplay feature in the upgraded XX11 and XX12 models can do. Also, you may want to look for the original Apple TV model as it has an analog output instead of the optical.

The Apple Remote will also work with Apple TV as well as iTunes. So either way you go, you're covered.

Hi guys. I'm going to update my HT to the Denon 891. Speakers ARE (sitting in office) Polk CSII center, monitor 40 front, monitor 30 rear, monitor 30 front high, 2 X psw10 sub, all speakers in cherry finish. I haven't bought the 891 yet, waiting for $350 price again. Yeah, I'm a cheap bastid. I bought the polks at newegg's dirt cheap sale a couple weeks back, less than $500 for all . The main reason I want the 891 is the multi eq to manage subs. Is there ANY reason I should not consider this receiver...... thank's.

Your title says Smart Audio, what do you mean by that?

You can't add networking to the 1911.

The best you can do is what we just talked about a few posts up ... the AppleTV 2, or Roku, or some other 3rd party wireless streaming device. However, without networking built in to the AVR you won't be able to control the AVR with an iphone, android or other smart phone nor will the AVR be able to receive firmware updates via Denon's servers.

I just used smart audio cause that is what best buy had on their page for the receiver like smart tvs.

I got the 791 about 2 months ago. Wish the 1912 was out then.

Just wanted to say thank you for the earlier advice. aTV 2 is EXACTLY what was needed. Had a DAC from a previous project and can now control Zone 2 tunes while out on the deck. Now I just need a remote beer pouring apparatus (wife politely declined request).

Hi there,

I own a denon avr 1911, but have it inside a closed furniture in my home lounge. The question is that i recently purchased a logitech harmony one, but the harmony 900 ir extender doesn´t work (the harmony one is only infrared remote). Anybody knows if its posible to buy or find an infrared extender (ir blaster or something similar) to control the denon with the harmony one and the door of the cabinet closed?.

OK, so I have had my AVR 2311 CI for just over a month now (out of warrenty since it was a refurb) and last night it just shut off about 20 min after I had turned it on. I noticed the light was flashing red about every 2 seconds or so. I looked into the manual and it tells me that it is too hot and shut down on its own. I said I should move it to a more ventilated area. So, I left it for about 30 min then plugged it back in and it did the same thing. I also tried it this morning and it gave the same results. What should I do? I dont have any warrenty on it from the manufacturer cause its a refurb. Thanks for your help.

You do not make it clear whether it was, or is now, in a well-ventilated area. Assuming it is, I suggest you reset the microprocessor.

Denon's warranty on refurbished AVRs is 90 days and if you purchased it from Dakmart, they add an additional 9 months for a total of 1 year. If you are outside of the 90 day period, give Denon a call anyway and see if they will still approve warranty coverage on it.

Yes. IR blasters/extenders will work. What about the Logitech IR extender?

I am not sure what "well ventilated" means, but I had it in my entertainment center which is not closed and it has about 2 inches on each side. When it happened I pulled it out and it didn't feel hot.

How do I reset the microprocessor?
