Receiver upgrade ... coax S/PDIF output?

I'm in a market for a new receiver, 5.1 only so no problems there. I've got my eye on a Denon but the one problem for me is that I need a coax output. I have an Astro mixamp and two consoles both using HDMI. I don't want to be constantly unplugging/plugging cables to this mixamp because honestly its a little bit on cheap side when it comes to build quality.

I've yet to find a receiver with any type of coax/optical out. I'd prefer coax though because I hate the way the optical connectors fit, if I move the mixamp the thing falls out. Any suggestions would be helpful. I don't want to spend over $400 on the receiver as well.

Thanks!

That might be a problem because there just aren't that many AVRs that come with digital outputs anymore ... but if there are any someone on this forum will know about it.

That's going to be tough what with no HDMI to Digital audio downconversion. In the Denon lineup, an optical out starts with the 1910, however, only puts out what is fed in to the matching labeled optical input.

Sounds like I'll end up connecting it manually. All of the lower end models in my price range probably won't have it. I've seen it on a 7.1 surround model but paying like $150 more for an output seems a little hard to swallow. Just trying to be sensible about it. Even so, it may only put out what it's fed via optical.

That being said, is there any other solution I could use.. say if I take optical out of the PS3 and optical out of the Xbox 360, is there possibly a 2x2 matrix type switch for just optical that anyone knows about?

Thanks for the replies thus far.

I just found this, HDMI Switch. 4x2 with one S/PDIF out. I'm thinking this would work, sucks that I have to buy a seperate piece of equipement. So I could run HDMI out of the output with no coax to my receiver. And the other would be for my mixamp setup with the hdmi running straight to the tv, coax to the mixamp. Sounds right, I think.

Wish it was HDMI 1.4 but I don't think I'll be getting a new 3D tv anytime soon.

When someone must use multiple optical inputs, a switch similar to what you found is often what they end up using.

Monoprice has a nice optical to coax converter for cheap. Buy whatever receiver you like...
