*OFFICIAL* Denon AVR 391 / 591 / 1611 Owner's Thread - Page 93

Can someone help me with figuring out how to select a certain audio input for a certain video input?

When I first set-up my 1611, I remember I was able to select which video source I wanted for each audio source.

I have my computer hooked up via HDMI (with a DVI adapter) to the 'Game' #4 input...and the headphone jack out of the computer into the dock RCA inputs. [I also use this RCA 'dock' cable for my ipod.

So, I want to watch my computer source through HDMI #4 (Game) and listen to the 'Dock' input.

Any thoughts?

Analog inputs are not assignable, so you'll need to assign the HDMI #4 input to the DOCK source name and then change INPUT MODE for the DOCK input to "Analog."

I know this may be a stupid question, but I am not very good at this stuff so here we go. I have a Denon 591, via HDMI cables it is connected to a Samsung UN46D7000, (an internet enabled 2011 TV.

For some reason the sound on some channels are higher/lower than the sounds on other channels which are sending the same signal, (Dolby). They are the same type of channels with the same type of programs. For example, I can watch a non-HD program on one channel and the sound, (voice level), is fine, change the TV to another channel and watch another non-HD program the sound is very low.

Any idea what the problem may be? Thanks

Not with your 591 ... rather with the broadcast signal itself as they may be different from station to station. Your best bet for TV viewing is to set Dyn EQ to ON, with the Reference Level Offset setting at 10 or 15, and to avoid the volume swings make sure Dyn Vol (p. 44) is set to "Evening."

That did it!

Thank you very, very much

OK, one more question and then I think I'm set. My Denon is setup so I can use it's standby passthru ability, (i.e. watch and hear TV with the AVR in standby mode). I have noticed while doing this that the sound completely drops out for a split second or two and then comes back. This happens about every 5 minutes or so. Any idea why this would be happening? Thanks

Could be the HDMI handshake having difficulty. If it only happens with your cable box, you may want to connect the HDMI from the box to the TV instead.

Which Denon receiver would be best?

I have a PS3, XBox 360, Wii, PC, Uverse, and IPod to hook up. I recentely purchased a pair of Energy CF-70's, CC-10 is on order, and a new sub and rears are to be purchased soon. I also just purchased a TC-P65S2 (not 3D). I'm curious as to which receiver the experts (you guys) think would be best. Pros and cons?

Awesome, thanks Smoothie...that worked!

Read the first post in this thread and follow the links. Really good info there, and concise, too.

It really depends on your budget and what features you require. With the sources you have, the 1911 or 2311 would be good models for you, although if you can wait another 1-2 months, the 1912 and 2212 will be released which will also include networking.

Thank you Herman and jdsmoothie.

Got a call from Bammel TV in Houston yesterday. My 591 is repaired! They said it would take 3 weeks so imagine my surprise when they said it's ready after only five days!! Picked it up this morning and installed. Thank you to whoever decided banna jacks would be a good way to hook up speaker wire. Running Audyssey now.

They installed two new IC chips, IC105 and IC108, if that means anything to anybody. They are third party parts: Tritronics part numbers 2630554005 and 9632390034205.

The tuner works now. It remains to be seen if the handshake issues remain.

Thanks jdsmoothie, it does work better that way. I really like just having one HDMI cable going from the AVR to the TV, and having everything go through it. however it may just be that the at&t uverse box simple cannot handle that setup well. I have reset the box and it after awhile the handshake issue returns, I may just have to keep the setup the way you suggested.

Hi gggbills, try setting cable box to output stereo instead of DD.

That did it JChin. Tested it for more than an hour and not one sound dropout. You folks have been very helpful, thanks a bunch!

I haven't tried this, yet, but I'm thinking about it. Run component video cables from the cable box to the AVR, along with an optical or digital audio cable. That should eliminate the handshake issues and still allow me to run only one HDMI cable to the TV. Don't know if the picture quality will suffer.

Is there any consensus that HDMI gives a better picture than component cables? I've noticed that it's so, but others have told me that they haven't noticed it. Yesterday the repair technician told me that he's heard of people getting a BETTER picture with component video cables!

I think it may be somewhat dependent on source and display devices, Herman. I've done side-by-side comparisons with my BD player and a high-end projector, and don't see any discernable differences, but that might just be my setup. HDMI and component, each have their own set of problems, and I've had far more with HDMI though I prefer it because it's a clean, one-cable connection for audio and video. I recently purchased a 1611 AVR and will be in the process of ringing it out with the HDMI feed one of these days soon. This column has been very valuable so far and I can't wait to get the 1611 going.

I've have my 591 hooked up without a problem for two weeks now. Starting today, the receiver has been shutting down and the standby light flashes. Is this protection mode? It has happened 4 times today. 3 times during one DVD viewing via the PS3.

Any suggested remedies would be helpful. Thanks.
^^
Yes, this is protection mode. More often then not, it's caused by a loose speaker wire from one post touching another post so check all speaker post connections both at the AVR and the speakers themselves. If you have in wall wiring, it's possible a nail may have penetrated the wire casing at some point.

As jdsmoothie said a speaker wire/speaker shortcut can be causing this. The other possibilities are overheating and low impedance speakers (4 Ohm, for example). Check all speaker wires (both ends!) and check whether the receiver is overheating (it should be very hot on the touch). If everything looks OK, disconnect all but the power and see whether the receiver will shut down again. If it does, you have to give Denon a call and have it repaired.

I'm a newbie here and to avr's. Just bought the denon 1611. I have to put my volume level to about 50 on the amp before I hear volume out of my speakers. Is that OK with this amp. Is it working to hard or do I need to make some changes to the settings on the amp? Any help is appreciated.

Seems a little high for minimal volume. Have you run AUTO SETUP yet?

Even when tuning in a well-powered local FM station?

hi just notice in a lot of the replies suggest a micro reset is this a common problem with the 591 does it have reliability issues
post #2786 of 4464
No more so than any other AVR. You're generally only going to read about problems on these boards and therefore rarely every hear from the satisified owners who have no issues whatsoever. The micro reset is similar to doing a CTL-ALT-DEL on a MS computer. Whenever something strange is happening, it's the procedure that generally resolves most issues.

Happy AVR591 owner here. No issues...yet

Thanks. Looks like it could have been an issue with my center channel wiring. So far, so good.

Is there a simple way to toggle the zone 2 speakers on and off without disrupting the sound in the main zone? I have my DVR set up with analog cables so I can listen to music outside on my deck. As I was watching TV last night I didn't realize the the sound was streaming through those speakers the entire time and I could not cut the sound to them. I ended up having to unplug the speakers.
Sure. Using your remote ... Zone Select (2) - Zone/Device (OFF).
