I just ran audyssey but cannot figure out how to change the speaker size and cross over. I can view the setting but can't change them. I went into manual set up and changed them but audyssey settings did not change.

Do you change the setting before you save after you run audyssey?
You make changes AFTER you run AUTO SETUP and save the settings. There are two sets of settings ... (1) the AUTO SETUP settings reflect a snapshot of the most recent AUTO SETUP and will not change until you run AUTO SETUP again or reset the microprocessor and (2) the MANUAL SETUP settings which can be modified and will be the settings that the AVR uses.

Thanks. So if I change the settings in manual settings those will be settings when I use audyssey?

Yup.

Got it. Weird that the changes don't show when I check audyssey settings.

So I just got a AVR-391 receiver with the 5 speakers. I connected it to a PS3 and to my TV. I'm trying to watch a Blu-Ray with surround sound. For some reason when I'm in BD mode, it will not let me choose PLII Cinema mode from the surround sound options. It just shuffles between Virtual, Direct, Stereo, Multi Channel In, and Multi Channel Stereo.

How can I get it to go to PL II Cinema mode to watch my movies/play my games in, and how can I keep it there so I don't always have to switch?

Multi Channel In is what you want anytime you are playing back 5.1 source material. PL II would only be used if you had 2 channel stereo content which you wanted to be processed to simulate surround using the center and rear speakers.

PLII cannot be applied to a 5.1 source. Simply engage PLII when playing a stereo source and the receiver will apply it whenever it detects a stereo signal on that input. So, no switching will be required in the future.

Okay, thanks for the help, guys. So if I'm watching a movie with 5.1 sound, switch it to Multi Channel In? And if I'm watching a movie with stereo and I assume mono sound, I switch to PL II cinema? And after I do this once, it will be the automatic settings for these formats in the future?

Yes. However, if you have a PS3 slim, you can set the PS3 to "bitstream" and the PS3 will pass the audio to the 391 to decode and you will see it (eg. Dolby TrueHD) on the 391's front panel display rather than seeing "Mult CH In."

How do I set the PS3 to bitstream?
Check the PS3 "bitstream" vice "LPCM" setting as noted here.

Okay, so I went into the PS3 Video Settings and changed the BD / DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) from Linear PCM to Bitstreaming. So that's all I need to do to change it to bitstreaming, correct?

Thanks so much, by the way. I really appreciate it.

JDSMOOTHIE & BATPIG, thanks for the replies. My buyer had bought a different volume control than we usually use and we've had to replace all of them for various issues. I replaced it in this instance and the client has not had any issues since.

As for whether this is more than is required in this situation, most likely yes. This client wanted something that they could potentially use later in another room.

Again, thanks for the help! Kathy

Does the AVR-591 support 1080p 3d playback? I'm using TMT to play 3d content and while the HDMI is routed through the AVR it only allows 720p. If I plug the cable straight into the TV it's 1080p. Also if I run the Cyberlink BD Advisor tool it fails on the display for 3d if the AVR is plugged in.
Yes, the 591 is an HDMI 1.4 AVR and supports full 1080p 3D video. Try each of the HDMI inputs to determine if the issue still exists.
I'm still having the issue, I've also swapped the HDMI cable.
Then the TMT is apparently not supported. HTPCs are known to have connectivity issues, whether 2D or 3D. Make sure you are using the latest firmware for the video card.
But I'm having the issue with the Cyberlink program as well, if the TV is plugged in directly to the PC it's fine, if it's not the 3d test fails for display.
Understood .. both software applications are coming from the HTPC so you may need to change video cards or 3D video applications. You could also try resetting the microprocessor on the 591 (p. 70).

Swapped the video card for a 5750 problem solved, looks like the 6450 is too new at the moment.

Thanks for the fast responses jdsmoothie.
Great. Thanks for reporting back with the solution.

Anyone have a recommendation for up to ~$500 pair bookshelf speakers with an AVR591? Would it be able to drive these well: PSB Image B6s?

I'm currently using Polk Monitor 40s in the front and want to switch them to the rear. The Polks aren't bad, it just that they're not as "clean" as my headphones . Using an Emotiva 10" sub with 80Hz crossover; main focus on music.

Just wanted to provide an update to this for others with the same issue.

It turns out that it is a driver issues, for ATI cards if you add a custom resolution through it's Catalyst Control Center this causes the display to fall out of compatibility for 3d playback. The reason for enabling this for me was to fix an overscan issue (image wasn't filling the entire screen), after removing the custom added 1080p24 resolution everything tested fine and 3d played in 1080p.

I recently purchased the 591 and installed it at home - I was wondering if it was possible to make the tv speakers the center speakers and how to set it up - thanks!!!
If you don't have a center speaker, the better option is to simply set the center speaker to NONE and let the FL/FR speakers create a phantom center. However, if you still want to use your TV speakers you would have to connect an audio cable from the cable/sat box to both the TV and the 591.

I just picked up a 1611 for a great price today but I have not hooked it up yet. I was looking at an 891 but price was 160 more for the 891 vs the 1611.

My question is this, is the Anchor Bay upconversion/scaling really needed? My source components are a Blu-ray player that upconverts DVDs, Moto DVR cablebox, Xbox 360 (all of these are hooked up via HDMI) and a Wii that will be hooked up via component. Wii is barely used and the 1611 will convert the analog to digital so I can still only use one cable to tv, but just no scaling. My TV is a Sony HX800 1080p and I do not foresee any need for additional analog inputs since the 1611 only has one component in.

Will the scaling really be an improvement on watching TV when using the Moto HD cablebox? I don't think the scaling will affect Blu-ray playback correct? And if the BD player already upconverts standard dvds, is the Anchor Bay really necessary? I don't really play music from my ipod on my receiver so those perks are not needed.

I guess I am just looking for some opinions on the scaling, I don't mind paying the extra money for a great benefit, but I would rather keep cost down.

Thanks
The upscaling on the AVR will be no better than what the TV is capable of, unless you go for the premium models or a dedicated upscaler costing a few grand.

Sit back and enjoy your new purchase. Happy owner of a Denon 1610 here
post #3030 of 4464
hi everyone.

New to the whole thing so please excuse my dopeness..

I have a Denon 391 and Mac Mini all connected to it.

The Mac Mini is connected to SAT/CBL via HDMI and I have a Toslink from the 3.5 Jack and connected to the back of the AVR into the same input (SAT/CBL)

Now in the past I have used an Anolog (RCA) cable to get me my sound and when I went out and got the optical I get no sound.

On the Mac Mini the sound Icon on the top of the status bar to the right it is greyed out and when I use the volume buttons on the keyboard the status of the volume is again all greyed out and wont actually work.

Any Ideas? The Mac seems to KNOW that its connected by Toslink optical but does not like it too well and no audio seems to be going into the AVR.
