Upgrading home theater, is it worth it?

Hi all,

I currently have a
TV: Sony KDS-55A2000 55"
Receiver: Yamaha HTR-5950
Speakers: Front L/R Athena WS-100. Center Athena WS-60, Rear surround, WS-15's and rear center, WS-60
Subwoofer: Klipsch Sub-12
DVD: Older samsung hdmi upconverting dvd player
Blu-ray: Sony BDP-460 - hooked up via tos-link for audio to yamaha, hdmi output to TV

My problem (mostly my own fault this time) was I purchased the Sony BDP-460 in impulse, seeing that I have never owned a blu-ray player, and upon hooking it up I noticed the new format of DTS-HD and the other new codecs were not compatible with my current receiver. I don't sit and listen to lots of music, this is mainly for home theater.

Yesterday I was teasing myself by going to magnolia (big mistake) and saw a closeout model Yamaha RX-V 1900 receiver for under what the internet has listed for price by 150 dollars, and I jumped on it, but only after having my stomach going in knots having made an investment in something that could very well be not much of an upgrade sound wise.

I hooked the new receiver up last night and was shocked that I couldn't get the DTS-HD light to come on, and it said PCM, I was not noticing any major difference in sound quality, to justify the 800 I spent on it.

My wife (not very happy with me), said she did not notice a major difference and thought it was a waste of money. (Helps to note, she's the one who pushed for our current setup as I got rid of all my old gear, years back, yamaha receiver with dolby pro-logic, crt tv etc.)

I got even more confused, since I don't keep up with gear 24-7, that the sound difference from what I had, to DTS-HD or any other HD audio format is barely if at all noticeable.

So I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice, and should have stuck with what I currently have. Is it worth keeping for down the road or should I wait, keep saving my fun money till things settle down and become more stable with regards to audio formatting, 7.1 8.1 etc somewhat getting a bit crazy now as I have a 6.1 setup and the new receiver doesn't have a input for a single center rear channel.

Any advice or input, push in the right direction, or tell me to put on the brakes would be greatly appreciated. This is really beating me up, if i'm hung up on specs, numbers, being overly picky.

Go to your BluRay set up menu - its set up to output PCM by default in most cases - change the output to BitStream. Boom- everything should be fine.

I am just finishing up a basement and just last night hooked up the rear speakers - put in 2012 in Master HD and got the same thing you describe. once change your DVD to output the correct format your reciever will lock right on to it.

Remember that today most BluRay disks are still only in 5.1 format- very few titles are 7.1. there is a mode on your reciever to creat 7.1 out of the 5.1.

As soon as you get the DTS-HD running - your reciever will display it and you WILL hear the difference.

Well damn!

I goofed on the blurray model number, it's a Bdp-s470 and from what I can tell there is only pcm or auto as a selection.

I just returned a panasonic cause the upscaling on standard DVDs was sub par. Wonder if I have to bring this one back too, if so what to get now?

Set it to Auto!

PCM is an output you would use if you were going directly into a TV or an older reciever. DVD players come set with this as the default usually.

Done deal! Definitely a huge improvement, let alone the receiver upgrade, but details I haven't heard before are now coming through. Only thing I am running into now is the hdmi cables.

One came with an old samsung up-converting unit, another is a brand new best buy dynex cable. If I have the dynex plugged in from the bluray to the receiver, then the older sammy cable going from the receiver to the tv, the receiver tries to decode, and the tv screen flickers ever few seconds. If I reverse this, no problem. Right now I have it hooked up with component cables from the bluray. I thought HDMI cables (aside from the networking and other 1.3/1.4 BS were the same) ?

Hard to say for sure - sometimes the cables that come with the units are very low quality. and it is defintiely possible to have a bad cable with a bad connector that is not making good connection. Trash that cable.

But do not go to best buy - they will try to tell you that you need a $50 cable. Go to bluejeancables or monoprice and you will be amazed. $5 buys a cable that is probably of equal quality. Same is true for large screen brackets- the pricing and quality are great.

Two things I would recommend is posting your issues relative to the player in the BR hardware forum within that player's master thread. Second, the same would apply to the receiver within the receiver forum Both of the rec/BR player's have owners that spend time answering questions about those specific units and exchange info relative to those models. This area is really intended for construction of Home theaters.

Good Luck

The BR hardware forum has a sticky called "Help me chose a BR player" intended to help folks with the best choice for their set up. I would post there.

Sorry just thought that it was the right forum, and did not want to add multiple threads when I could be efficient and only add one. I'll split them up and post.
