Wires and cables set up question?

Hi all,

Just a few questions concerning setting up my new living room. I am looking to get my various wires and cables from Monoprice and want to make sure I'm doing it right.

Which guage of speaker wire should I use? Right now I just have this really thin stuff that came with my HTIB. 12 AWG should be about right. And should I put Banana Plug connectors on them or leave bare wire?

For sub cable, I just need a single RCA correct? Monoprice cables are quality yes? Some other places wanted $75 for a 50 foot RCA. Yuck!

16AWG should be fine for < 40' runs.
14AWG if longer.
12AWG is overkill.
Use bare wire. No great benefit adding bananna plugs.
For sub cable, any RG59 will be fine.

Thanks for your input Ratman,

Ok, so I'll get 16 AWG for my front 3 and probably 14 AWG for surrounds. I need to find a way under or over my room to keep the wires out of sight. Saying that, do I need wire specific for in-wall installation?

Banana plugs are nice for the back of the receiver, as it makes it less cluttered and easier to install.

CL-2 rated wire is ok for in-wall installation - they sell that on monoprice as well.

As long as the receiver and speakers can accept 14AWG... use that all around. It's still easier to work with than 12AWG.

As for banana plugs, IMO it makes no difference other than expense and perhaps convenience if you expect to frequently move the speakers/receiver. Clutter is not a big issue since you still have the same amount of speakers wires connected to the back of the receiver.

Yes by code you need in-wall rated wire. Monoprice sells this, as does pretty much anyone selling speaker wire, but note that not all is in-wall rated.

I would recommend just getting a big spool of 14 (or 12 if you want overkill for peace of mind) and run that everywhere. Cheaper that way, simpler. I pull 12 everywhere in my own system, but to save a few bucks 14 is totally fine in most all normal home situations. Speaker wire is speaker wire. Monoprice is nothing special, but cheap and totally fine wire, I've used it.

No reason to use bananas unless you plan on reconnecting stuff with some frequency, then they're handy to have. Otherwise they're just expensive. IF you like the look of them or whatnot, or have difficulty accessing the back of the receiver and want to terminate the wire to bananas where its easy then just plug them in where it isn't or something, then sure go ahead. No real difference either way, just whatever you prefer.

Also, any basic coax should do fine. Dunno monoprice prices for terminated coax, you can also just get a big chunk of bulk and slap some F ends on there yourself, then just get f-RCA adapters and you're good to go, that may or may not be cheaper or easier if it's a particularly long run. Try to get solid-copper (anything audio or video should be fine) coax rather than commonly found copper-clad-steel RG6 that's used for broadcast/satellite (you'll find that at most hardware stores, solid copper A/V coax is usually relegated to specialty places that focus on AV cabling.)

Thanks for reinforcing what everyone had previously stated.

Post 7 kinda went overboard IMHO... he just needs sub cable.
