Denon AVR-890 or Onkyo TX-SR608

Thanks in advance to all who can help.

Here's my problem. Last 2 receivers I've owned have been Onkyo. Went to buy the Onkyo SR608 but they were out of stock ($500). They had an open box on a Denon AVR-890 for same price but it's missing the set up mic for the audyssey. Actually it's missing everything except the remote.

Trying to decide...open box Denon with no mic or new Onkyo TX-SR608?

Thanks again for helping me decide!

Would really depend(to me anyway) how much the mic from Denon cost. Need it to calibrate Audyssey. If the mic is a reasonable price I would go for the 890 over the 608. Audyssey Multi-Eq would be worth the price difference IMO.

The mic is $65 from Denon. I think I can probably get them to replace the mic but I might have to wait a few days for them to order it. I've just never had any experience with Denon so didn't know if it was worth the trouble. Thanks for the insight. What do you like about the Denon over the Onkyo?

I like this model Denon over the 608 due to its version of Audyssey over the one in the 608. It has multi-EQ whereas the 608 has 2-EQ. Multi-Eq will calibrate for the sub and 2-Eq won't. Multi-EQis worht the difference. The sub is the hardest to get right. Also, welcome to the forum. Its a guarantee you will spend more money now on your equipment than ever before.

Why go with an open box when you can get a brand new Denon 2310 for the same price at Electronics Expo (authorized vendor)? It's actually a slight upgrade to the 890 as it includes a RS-232 jack that allows you to do your own firmware upgrades whereas the 890 requires you to send it in to a Denon Repair facility at your own cost. Check out the first post in the Denon 2310/890 Owner's thread for more information.

I never updated firmware on a reciever before. How often does this need to be done?

For the 2310/890 there have been 3 firmware updates (read about them by clicking on the 2nd link in my sig) of which the 3rd one is being released sometime this week. These updates fix problems only and not everyone necessarily have any of the issues. Although regardless of whether you need the update or not, the 2310 is still the better buy especially as the 890 is open box and doesn't even have a mic!
