My guess is it has something to do with some kind of a re-design to address heat issues.

btw, if the avr is 8.8 amp or 11 amp, it means that's the max amperage, meaning it is no constantly burning 8.8 or 11 amp, is that right?

Yeah, hope others have theirs in route as well. I'm having quite a week this week (not typical of my luck)....had a traffic ticket reduced without even having to fight it, had an out of stock receiver ship within 2 days....thinking I should pick up a couple of lottery tickets.

It appears they got a bit dyslexic and are using LIFO in lieu of FIFO processing.

i guess they're telling the truth... the first ten they sequenced, then after that they weren't wasting their time sequencing and said f it it's a free for all out the door.

Just ordered 808. Great price. They did not have in stock but are expecting in 7 to 10 days. I'm upgrading from a Yamaha dinosaur and can't wait.

Haha, Lucky! Mine shipped too, but I have to wait until Tuesday 7/6

I have to admit I am not thrilled with this year's new offerings. It seems the 608 was the "balls out" unit of the bunch. Reminds me of the generation a couple years ago that started with the 806...

Oh well, I can take a break from Onkyo Receiver Reviews this Summer/Fall...

sdeboy - thanks for the info so far on the Zone 2 and streaming abilities.

I am somewhat of a newbie here, so maybe this is a silly question, but...

I want to purchase a cheap set of wireless speakers to put outside on my patio, and I was thinking the zone 2 input would serve this function?

I am looking at speakers like this and according to the directions for those speakers, to hook them up to your AVR:

1. Plug the stereo plugs on the provided Y-adapter audio cable into the AUDIO IN jacks on the back of the transmitter (make sure to match the colors on the plugs and jacks).

2. Plug the mini-plug end of the provided Y-adapter into a mini-jack to RCA adapter (not included).

3. Connect the stereo plugs on the mini-jack to RCA adapter to the corresponding left and right audio outputs of your A/V receiver, amp, or other audio source.

So I understand I would need a mini-jack to RCA adapter I can get cheap at Radio Shack. For step 3 above, where I need to hook it into my audio outputs, would that be the Zone 2 outputs? When I look at the back of the NR708 the Zone 2 stuff looks like standard RCA connections, right?

If my assumptions are correct, if I plug the RCA adapter into the Zone 2 RCA outputs, I would be able to stream Internet Radio or MP3s to my outdoor wireless patio speakers, but then use the receiver in the house to listen to something else or watch something on TV and use my 5.1 set up inside to listen to another source?

Many thanks to anyone who can help me confirm these ideas!

I got the same response about the 808 earlier when I called ABT. I guess for the price I can wait a couple more weeks.

Just noticed in the 808 manual Slacker radio AND Last.fm are listed!! Good news for any Canadians.

I am having trouble determining for certain what other receivers can do that.
Can the 1007? The "features" section on Onkyo's website only says "powered zone 2".
thanks for any info

This is exactly what I need. Except I want 7.1 in the living room. (I've been unable to upgrade my current receiver because a receiver that allows this is hard to find.) I think only the 1008 does this based on the manual and rear pictures. The lower models all require an amp for the 3rd zone.

Somehow I think you'll want to try out the 3008/5008. MultEQ XT32 might be fun to review

I got my 708 yesterday. It sparked off a major rewiring (and cleaning!) of all my components, as my last receiver didn't even have HDMI, and somehow I'm a couple of HDMI cables short, but that's another story. I've got D* HR-24, a PS3, and a DVD/CD disc changer w/component and optical cables all working through the single HDMI to my Samsung UN55C8000.

Without any calibration yet, the sound is very good. I don't even have all my new speakers wired or placed yet, just the left, right and center.

The 3D pass-thru works great. Played one of the PS3 3D demo games. For those rushing out for new "1.4" cables, you don't need to. I'm using two RCA 12' 1.3 cables, and they work fine. 3D started up automatically as it should.

I haven't got to the internet connection yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll hard wire it to test it out. Looking forward to Pandora. I now have 4 A/V components that use the internet, so I'll be putting in a wireless N bridge next week. The HR-24 will handle all of the video steaming, and it's hard-wired through the cable.

This is a whole new world for me as I'm not an audiophile, which is ironic because I've laid out PCB boards used in some very high end audio and video equipment. I've started reading these audio threads with about 10-20% terminology comprehension, and I'm maybe up to 30% now. Heck, I now have the Audyssey microphone for calibration that came with the 708.

As far as I can tell, you are right in all of your assumptions, although it looks like you can bypass the adapter with just a set of RCA stereo cables. I might even borrow your idea.

I am disappointed/confused. The 3008 doesn't seem to be a significant improvement over the 3007. Can the Reon VX perform noise reduction on 1080p material ? The 2010 high end Yamahas have the new HQV Vida (1900) which should be used in a video scenario with 1080p 3D content.

Yes, its a on demand thing.

Heat is a wast of power.

The biggest surprise to me is how "lite" the 708 is compared to the 808...27 vs almost 40 is significant....1007 is now 899.708 is 799 and 807 is 699 at JR.....Gun to your head which one would get members, bang for buck wise?

the early returns seems like the 708 is the best value out of the 08 series...curious to how would onkyo would create that? if the 708 gets this much pub as the 805 wound up getting when it was all said and done, this could be a classic.

yes the weight difference is big, everything else specwise seems to be the same. really dont know what the weight is that the 708 is missing, or the 808 gains.
