It still might be hardware, but it is pointing to hardware.

I could not get the Pandora to work. It found my stations and then displayed "cannot play" on all stations.

Have you talked to onkyo about these issues?

I'm looking at the 708 to replace my old (SVHS era) Sony. I'm a little nervous because I bought and sold two Onkyo 606 receivers last spring because they wouldn't shake hands with my HDMI 1.0 JVC TV. New TV now but these reported network problems aren't making my decision any easier.

I had the Ethernet problem too. It was really pretty bad.
The unit would blink the network light and the Network menus were absent: indicating it could not initialize the network. However, Windows 7 could open the receiver's web page.

I wish I could find a xx8 owner who said the network worked. So far, none have done so.

When it worked, the sound of streamed CD rips was great.

No. I have a 5507 and an HT-RC180 and both work fine on the same network so I assumed it was defective and sent it back. I intended to get a replacement 708 but it would be nice if someone reported the networking was operational.

It was pretty tricky to get the network to work.
When I had it up, I tried to update the firmware and there were no updates available.

If this is a software bug, it is going to be loads of fun for users who will have to find the right combination of network plugging to get it working long enough to get the firmware.

I think we are all used to product shipped with the expectation of updates coming along to fix or improve them. That means, you MUST get the networking right

DSD (SACD) bit-streamed from the Oppo BDP-83 and BDP-80 work fine with my 5507.

I just called onkyo about this issue to see if they have any plans for a software update to fix it and they said they yet to hear about this issue????

That's what I expected.
I think that these guys only hear about RMA's.
That is why I decided to return mine. To get the message across.

Wow, this networking issue seems rampant with Onkyo and is very disheartening. IEEE 802.3 has been around since the early 80's and current ethernet phy's are pretty foolproof to design with, which normally points back to a software issue. I sell IC's for a living (including phy's from Broadcom) and have never seen issues at my customers related to hardware, providing design guidelines are followed.

That being said, Onkyo should be ashamed of themselves for their piss poor plug and play networking capability and will hopefully get these issues fixed with a future firmware update. My 708 is going to get unpacked and hooked up this weekend. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I don't have ethernet connectivity due to the rural area I'm in, so will have to rely on USB update or take into work to connect to the internet.

Do you have a Windows PC that your could rip a CD to?
That is all that is needed. You should be able to browse to it and play songs.

Of course, you will need a router or something running DHCP.

Rich, I was more referring to method of updating firmware vs. accessing a PC for music. But since you mentioned it, I do have a HTPC I built a few years back to use with my Mits RPTV that I plan to move downstairs and use with my AVR/new HT. Main goal presently is to get this thing done so I can watch some movies....it's been pushing 1.5 years in the making Will need to do some upgrades on the HTPC to enable it when I can get to it.
Thanks for the suggestion/feedback.

hey guys!
I'm considering buying ONKYO receiver and can't decide among ONKYO 708 and 807. Any advise? The price is almost the same, why should I go with 708?

Thanks.

The 708 has 3D pas-through while the 807 does not. If you need this feature then the 708 would be your best bet, if not I would go with the 807.

I have the 708..network features work great..not a single glitch since setting it up.

Got my 808 today. Set it up and tested the network feature the first thing. I didn't see any problem with it. Streamed music from Windows 7 media server, Tversity, and Pandora for 2 hours+.

Just out of curiousity, where did you order your 808 from?
Received a new Onkyo TX-NR708 yesterday from my local dealer. Since it was replacing a 707, I figured the swap-out/set-up to be pretty simple. It was, but there were a couple of surprises.

First, upon starting the Audssey set-up I noticed the on-screen speaker display shows 2 subs rather than 1 on the 707.

Second, the Audssey set-up now asks you to set your sub(s) to 75db and sends some test tones and measures them so you can do this without the need for a SPL meter. Cool...so I thought, but while setting the levels I couldn't help but think "volume is too low". The volume was significantly lower than it had been with the 707. My first movie-test confirmed my suspiscions.

Setting your subs takes time and Audssey (at least as used in these receivers) only gets you about 1/3rd of the way there.

That having been said, I did the swap and calibration in less than an hour. That included manually settting the cross over points and running Audssey. Of course, by personal default, I set the video output to "Through" and the video processor to "Skip". The (new) Onkyo manual still recommends this (though the recommendation is burried on page 22).

I'll be delving into the rest of the features and set-up over the weekend. I use external amps, so I can't say I noticed any "difference" in sound quality. It sounds great.

But did you try to turn off and then turn on again the 808 to see if it has the same problem like the 708??

Next time when you power on, do you need to unplug then replug your network cable from the receiver? I have to do it every time to connect to network.

I picked up my pre-ordered 708 from Abt last night. However, it'll be a bit of time before I am able to set it up. I decided to repaint my media room but I am having a carpenter rehang a few doors as well. As soon as the doors are rehung and the paint is done, I can move all my equipment back into the room for setup!

Just unboxed and set up my 808. Very nice. so far not running hot at all....very reasonable temps. I have sony playstation, cable, WDHD, and my apple hooked up to the receiver. I will play around with it some more tonight. Aud was very easy to set up and I have a significant difference from my old Yamaha in sound quality and balancing of the surround speakers. I have zone 2 (powered) also hooked up to my in ceiling speakers throughout my house which is very nice and can have a different source.

One question I have for the group related to HDMI passthrough. I had always understood this to mean that when the receiver was off, one source would continue to be passed through to the TV. If so which source and how can this be set up? I would like to have the cable pass through so that wife doesn't have to mess with receiver too much.

Let me know if you have other questions. I will post what I can. This was a huge step up in AVR for me and so far I'm loving it.

Congrats staiman, it uses the last source thats was On when the receiver is turned Off (Standby). Go into Hardware Setup > HDMI >Audio Tv Out and turn this to On, might have to turn HDMI Control to On also.

thanks JChin...you are the man. This thing has soooo many features to play with.

Pass-through means that when powered on, the original signal is passed without altering the resolution. My 5507 does not pass video when it is turned off.

I am trying to find folks who can try playing ripped files or Internet Radio/Pandora. Is that something you can try?

Thanks,

Rich

The 808 is passing through video and audio, but it will only do this when I have on RIHD, which my TV is not rated for...causing some odd interactions between the AVR and TV. I will play with the USB ripped audio tomorrow.

is everyone seeing this problem even if powering back on the avr from standby mode as well as completely powered off (actually unplugged from wall socket or power brick toggled off).

I'm getting really low volumes from my PS3 and cable box when hooked up to the 708 via HDMI. They are connected using HDMI 1.3 cables, does that matter? I really don't hear any sound till about -30db

If I try internet radio or mp3 from a usb drive, the sound can be heard at about -40db easily.

I didn't think I would have to set intellivolume for all my hdmi inputs. Any ideas? Anyone experiencing something similar

ps. no network problems for me, even when turning on/off

Pandora and iRadio are working perfectly. Took a little time to get them set up but works great. No messing with internet connection as some have suggested. The receiver was off all night and just powered up and Pandora is now streaming. I love it when stuff you pay for works!! I have downloaded some mp3, movies and lossless audio to a hard drive that I will try on USB. I will post back later.

Now just need to get a 55" LG 9500

By the way, I have the following connected:
Playstation 3
WDHD
Comcast Cable Box w/ DVR
Mits 65833 (DLP Diamond Sieries)
Apple Network
Streaming iTunes with Lossless Audio through Airport Express

This thread is confusing. Too many models with different features. Should be a separate
owners thread for each model!
