Hello, I've just set up the Onkyo TX-NR708 and am having trouble connecting to my home network.

When I enable Set-Up and scroll to Hardware Set-up, no options appear for either "Network" or "Firmware Update". Is there something I must do to see these options?

I have a hard line Cat 5 cable running to the receiver. It is running through a Netgear switch, which in tern is connected directly to my Lynksys Router. I've verified that the connection to the Onkyo is 'live' by hooking the line to a laptop and verifying that I have internet access.

My network is set up on Windows 7 and all the other computers on the network have access, including a wireless printer. When I open Network connections on my computers I see only the regular connections. Yes, the Onkyo is powered up and the ethernet cable is plugged in.

Update: after leaving the receiver on for 30 minutes, I checked my network connections on my office computer and see a new device listed. It is called "internet Gateway Device". So I did a Hardware Reset...still no "Network" or "Firmware Update" options in "Hardware Set-Up" menu

So far I'm at a complete loss as to dealing with this. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks:

A couple of us have had this problem.
If you unplug the connector and plug it back in just after connecting to the network you may be able to get it to work.

I returned mine, but you need to call Onkyo. It looks like a bug.

I didn't have to do anything special to see those options when I set my 708 up this morning. In fact, I went right to firmware update/start before I considered that this might be something I should think about first. Fortunately, it finished the process with no problems.

Ok, got my 808 hooked up today, replacing a 707. This thing is quite a bit heavier than the 707. Sounds similar to the 707 but with slightly more noticeable power. Couple of things if anyone can answer:

1. The PS3 that I use as blue ray player is noticeably lower in volume when hooked up than on the 707. I don't like that! I am having to increase the volume during blue ray playback in the PS3 display. Having to play 808 at reference level, 82 on the volume control, to get it at levels I like. Anyone experiencing this?

2. Do you guys turn on Dynamic EQ?

Thanks.

Rich, I followed the instructions you gave me by e-mail:
1. Turn on Receiver and then switch to the Net/USB input
2. THEN plug in the Ethernet Cable

Once I did this, the "missing" options showed up!

Thanks, Rich! Once again the AVS Forum comes to the rescue!

For anyone with a similar problem, I suggest you connect your Ethernet Cable BEFORE turning on the Receiver for the first time. Then turn on the Receiver and select the Net/USB input. You'll see a message telling you whether you are connected or not. If you don't see that you are connected, unplug the ethernet cable and switch the Receiver to another input. Then reconnect the Ethernet Cable and again select the Net/USB input. Once your connection if recognized, go to Set-Up/Hardware Set-Up/Firmware Update. Check for any Firmware updates before proceeding with the rest of your installation, and before running Audssey.

FYI, I'm usually pretty "tech savy" and have set up several computer networks and work with computers every day. In a previous life, I was a home theater installer, certified as an "advanced" installer by the THX Home Division of LucasFilm. I point this out because this network problem was not an obvious "fix" and the manual explains this very poorly.

johng,

I am glad you got it working.
You may want to check for tha firmware update.

Also, I would call them and report the problem.
This is a work around that should not be required.

If the tech tells your that they never heard of the problem, ask them if they were listening. Get a case number

Will do, Rich. Actually I'll take it a step farther. One of my Clients is an Onkyo dealer. I will go to them and have them call Onkyo. As they say, money talks....

I think the whole net/usb module is a bit buggy. I get the same indications and I think it coincides with another problem I have where I get stuck in "Now Initializing" when trying to do net/usb. Doing the above fixes it. Otherwise, my TX-nr808 has been working great.

The only other problem I had was when I first tried to plug in my iphone but I think that's just more of the USB/NET problem.

I hope a firmware comes out soon, this should be an easy fix. I've notified Onkyo myself to the problem. Currently listening to pandora but it involved me replugging the cat5 cable.

Same here with 808 and ps3. I have to increase ps3 hdmi output volume to +1 or +2 for different movies.

For those without network issues, what are your firmware versions?

My 808 firmware is 1001-0100-0010-0100 and I am experiencing network issues.

Calebju, are you increasing the volume during playback by accessing the options during playback and hitting the speaker icon? Or is there another way to raise the volume?

Yes and it is the only way I am aware of.

does the extra features warrant buying the 708 ($700) over the 707($450)? Does the heat shorten the life span? it will be placed in a well ventilated area btw, no need for 3d or ipod

Not worthy. As a 808 owner, with various network/usb/iphone issues, my advice is if you don't need those features, don't pay for it. (for $650 vs $500 - tough call, for $700 vs $450 - no brainer) You may find even better deal on 707 down the road.

Got my 708 yesterday and have the network connection problem that folks have reported in the other 708/808 thread, sent a note off to Onkyo to see what they say.

This is my 1st AVR that has HDMI on it and have connected all my hardware via that but have an issue with my Mits 73735 TV, the video settings keep getting reset back to the factory defaults if I:

- Switch inputs on the TV to something else and then back to the TX-NR708
- Turn the TV off and then back on.

All the hardware that's now going thru the AVR used to be HDMI connected directly to the Mits without any problems.

Does the 708 have the hdmi thru? I think thats what its called. I want to be able to have receiver off and still have the signal go to my tv. My 706 gets hot as hell and in the summer it really adds to the heat in a room. Would love to just have tv and cable on.

It does not. If you still get the 708, maybe you could also get an HDMI splitter to use on those hot days.

Hi mtnbiker, it does have HDMI pass through in Standby. Meaning the unit will not be completely Off so power consumption will increase (0.2w North American model) which translate some heat in Standby mode.

My 708 HDMI output turns off in Standby. What are you doing different?

Power in standby mode is used to run enough of the system to respond to the remote.

How would a receiver that is turned off, know which input to pass through?

Hey JChin, I think putting the AVR in standby mode makes it consume .2watts. it does not automatically have hdmi passthrough activate for you, nor at that .2wattage. .2watts is just the AVR standby mode energy consumption. I think when reading the manual, you have to go into the AVR setup menu to turn on hdmi passthrough specifically... where upon the HDMI passthru mini red LED comes on on the front left face of the AVR, and the energy consumption goes from .2watts to like 30watts (24/7).

check pg 56 if we're all talking about the same thing:

Yes I know and you are correct. Activate by turning On HDMI Control (RIHD) and Audio TV Out.

Thanks for the lesson. Since I use a universal remote, I had all that stuff turned off, except for the ARC, and never gave it a second thought.

Hey, mtnbiker, forget what I said before, the 708 does have HDMI pass through, as long as you don't turn it off with menu choices that don't mention that fact on screen.

Hi RichB, it uses the last HDMI Input before turning Off (Standby) the receiver.
