DirecTV says: "No 3D TV for you, sorry!"

After about an hour and a half on the phone with DirecTV, it has been determined that I can not get DirecTV in 3D period, end of story.
It seems that I need a HR21 and they will not/can not order one for me to replace my two Hr20s.
They even suggested I go to BestBuy and rent a HR21 from them. Of course they neglected to mention that they pulled all the receivers from Bestbuy.

Oh Well! I guess I'll have to be satisfied watching my own home made 3D video.

They are basically denying you 3D service then? That doesn't seem right.

Yes and Yes!

DirecTV is denying me 3D service but at least they were nice about it. They must have used the word "sorry" a hundred times or more.

Frank,

Im not sure this will work but i read somewhere that if you call Directv after you have a 3DTV and have it connected with an HDMI cable to your Directv receiver and tune to channel 106. That there will be a code, saying you cant receive this and call directv with code # XXX. When you call with the error code then they will troubleshoot the problem, as if you dont know what it is, and determine the box you have does not work, and then they will swap it.

IDK but thats what i read somewhere, maybe on satellite guys forum.

or maybe you should take that Directv receiver and plug it into the dryer outlet in your laundry room. Smoke it with 220V and then directv will have to swap it. Sounds like a lightning strike to me!!

you might consider a new HR24-500: they are faster and I believe they support 3D

cost is approx $200.00 but it is a leased DVR and you have to commit to 24 months more of D*

the HR24 box is very nice

The only thing I dislike about D* is their replacement policy: if your new HR24-500 DVR goes bad under warranty or service contract, D* will send you a replacement box at no charge...but they will not guarantee what replacement box they will send: it could be a refurbished HR20

That is almost exactly what I did.

Or tell them to come get their sh** out of your house. And the day after its removed have it re-installed. Then they would have to bring you a box newer than an HR20.

You can probably tell, I am pissed by how they responded to you.

I am so tired of companies like Directv, Comcast, etc. having no respect for their customers.

Nice idea except they won't swap it out for anything.
They made that very clear.

The person you were talking to on the phone didn't know what they were talking about. If you follow ccool96's instructions from post #4 they will replace your unit with a newer model that can do 3D.

I had tuned to channel 106, and followed the instructions on the screen including giving them the error code.
It didn't help.

You are VERY wrong. They can not and will not replace a hr20 dvr with a new model. Period, I have also spent hours wasted. You can buy a new leased one from them but they will not guarantee a newer receiver. You might still end up with a hr20

I just can't believe how unprofessional DirectTV dealing with their customers like that. You would assume they will give you higher receiver for buying a new leased one, just silly business if they don't guarantee a newer model. This is indeed was one my issues i had when i had DirectTV in the past. Comcast and Dish Network probably not any better!

(Just funny how they say all receivers need a simple update to watch ESPN 3D, but just to find out you need a newer model to make it work).

You probably got a CSR that doesn't know about the new program for updating the HR20s to newer models. Call back and try again. You have to follow the directions on the screen and have the specific code that shows up on your TV when you try to tune to the 3D channel. I guess that code is different for each customer somehow, so they don't have everyone with an HR20 calling in with the same code trying to get newer receivers.

Sorry, but you are the one who is wrong in this scenario. Normally DirecTV will not let you upgrade to a newer model. That is because they feel that all of the current HD receivers and HD-DVRs are pretty much equivalent. They don't consider differences in speed or hard drive size to be a difference worthy of allowing customers a free upgrade to a newer box.

However, the HR20 models are not able to do 3D, unlike the HR21 and up. Therefore they are allowing people with compatible 3D TVs to upgrade their HR20s to newer models so they can access the 3D content. They don't gaurantee that those customers will get HR24s, they just gaurantee they will get a model that is compatible with 3D (HR21 and up).

KUJ...,
What make/model 3D TV do you have connected to your HR20? Did you receive the alert to contact them with the code to update your receiver to a HR21 or HR22?

You need to tell DirecTV about this.
I was on the phone with these people for over 90 minutes and was transfered to three different departments and they all said I can not get a new receiver that is 3D capable from them.
They were all made well aware of the fact that I had a HR20 plugged into a Panasonic 3D TV and had the onscreen message that has been mentioned too many times to count.

Well I am not sure where you got your info but I have talked to at least 5 different people and they all tell me the same thing.
They would NOT guarantee a newer h21 or up. They all said it would most likely be a newer one and if I did not get a 3d compatible one I keep keep returning it until I get one.
Plus I had to pay $149 and renew my commitment.
I also tried saying one of my hr20's died (since I have had 3 die) and they just sent me another hr20.
That was last week
My TV gets here early next week FYI.

Sorry im confused. I just ordered Directv and they told me any HD receiver would get 3D signal just fine. Is that right???? What do i have to do to make sure they'd bring me a 3D-capable receiver when installation takes place?

Some people are having success at getting the replacement for free, some aren't. All I can say is to keep calling back and trying.

Fellas had sane issue I got someone from their ACE dept he said they could not select the model hr they would drip ship from their system..he was confident it would be 21 or higher due to pending launch 6/11, but said if I got a 20 I would have to send it back and they would not be able to guarantee 21 or higher until they tweak their system on 6/11. I went with it and 2 days later I had an HR-22. Have them send you an upgrade you should be good.

You will probably be taken care of. DirecTV loves new customers. It's the long time customers such as myself that seem to get the shaft.

"Have them send you an upgrade"?
I called again and pleaded with them to just send me "an upgrade" and they said flat out "NO!"

I know for a fact Frank you can "upgrade" by buying a new one. They offered me a discount of $50.

But you had to pay correct?
I called and got transferred to the protection plan department (which I signed up for two years ago so I could get a free replacement for an HR20 that died). Because I still have an HR10 in service (I use it for OTA), the CSR said she could send me a new HR2x. She said when I get it to call and deactivate the HR20 instead of the HR10.

So some CSRs will find a way, if they can.

How can you buy a new one when they don't sell them? They only lease them.
What am I missing here?

Can you not say your receiver is bad (*wink) and you need a replacement? You may have to pay some fees but they have to supply you with equipments as long as you're a customer, right?

You can go right to the website and buy a new one, they are $200. If you call with "our" problem they will knock it down to $149.
And yes you still lease them by paying another $5 a month.
How this makes sense is beyond me and I have been with them 10+ years.
