Lol, I was thinking that as an option. But man as a 36 year old man who has been with them over 10 years its really sad to have to even think of doing that.

Very sad indeed. But think about how sad they cannot even take an outdated receiver back and get you a new one (which i believe you need for your 3D viewing). I mean, what do they have to lose??? You're still paying the "lease" fee, which essentially is the cost/price of the receiver anyway!

I'm about to be a Dave customer and im already worried about their CS having read your story. My current cable company has been nice, but they have not had any updates on new/HD/3d channels. I just have to walk away. Oh well, with some money for "early termination".

I'm in the same boat. As I posted over on DBS Talk, I've been giving them $100/month for over 10 years, and they told me the same thing....if you want 3D, buy a new receiver. I have the protection plan, but the suggestions of calling with a broken receiver is useless, all they will do is send you a refurbed HR20.

However....they are offering MRV specials for $99. So if you go that route, the HR20 isn't supported, so they have to swap out the HR20 with something else. It might be an HR24...it might not, but at least it will be 3D capable.

The H20 will not do MRV because it has no ethernet port, but the HR20 does do MRV, at least via ethernet (I don't know for sure about DECA). I used the HR20 as a MRV server for about 9 months.

Same here, I'm using it now for MRV over ethernet. I guess it's not officially supported, that's why they'll swap them out.

I agree. They are not being flexible with this. I don't see why not sign up under your wife name. Sometimes you can think like that when the company doesn't stay professional with customers like you that have been loyal and stayed with them.

yeah, i am starting to believe they are all bad as well to some extend. Cables have their advantages and disadvantages, same with Satellite. But by the end of the day you make a judgment based on your needs and that could very well determine how to make a good judgment to pick a provider.

I haven't heard the term "Retention Supervisor" yet. I was a DTV customer for 13 yrs and usually got what I wanted by demanding to speak to the Retention Group Supervisor. I was on the DTV Forum for years and after awhile the direct telephone number was posted. Does this not work anymore? Haven't had DTV for a few years.

Turns out I am still under contract until Dec. Guess I will just buy one off ebay or I found a company called solid signal who sells the hr24.

I have been a D* customer since 1994 and got burned when I bought 2 new black HR21's a couple of years ago: I had issues with them and D* came out and confirmed they were defective : to replace my new HR21's they sent me two refurbished older silver HR20's units that had obviously been used/ abused: one unit would not even boot up

I called customer retention but they were of no help: even if they promise to send you a new box they will send you whatever garbage they have without refurbished boxes they have left over

This is a big issue for me and I have given up trying to get resolution: if / when FIOS become available I will cancel D* in a heartbeat over this specific issue

D* should offer an option to specify a specific replacement box under the protection plan: let them charge a fee so we can specify a replacement model: the current policy is unfair and unacceptable to many D* users: when will they listen and resolve this issue?

Thanks!! That settles it then, looks like I am buying a HR24 from them. So I will "own" this one correct? Or will I still have to pay the lease fee?

you will still not own it

when you activate it you have to agree to a new 24 month commitment: it remains a leased box because, as they explain it, they are supplementing the cost of the box in exchange for the 24 month agreement

This! They finally forced my to sign up for regular service to keep my NFL Sunday Ticket. It was the retention group that I somehow got to and they were VERY accommodating. If I ever have issues I always request that group directly. I think those CSR's have more leeway than the normal ones.

2 days ago I had a message on my TV Sreen that said my reciever was just updated for 3D, I have an HR20. Why would they tell me that when The Dam Reciever I have won't work with 3D?

I am going to call now and see if they will upgrade me to an HR21 or HR24. Will post a reply soon.

On hold now, the Rep did not even know what 3D is????????????

Just hung up; the Rep spoke with her manager and stated that my receiver HR20 is 3D capable.

I guess I will wait till Monday to call back to get someone who knows what's going on.

So I call Directv again, tell them that the last rep I spoke to told me that my receiver would be fine. I then read the above to the rep, she told me that my recieve would not work and that she would have to transfer me to an advanced rep. I told this rep the situation and she stated that the only way I would get an hr21 is if I bought one. She said she could give me one at a discount but not free.

I stated that Directv said that my current receiver was updated for 3D via on screen message; That was wrong. I then stated that the first rep I spoke to told me that my reciever would work and if it didn't Directv would upgrade for free, that was wrong. I said that this is not right, I have been a customer for 12 years and all I am asking is that directv give me a receiver I can use to view their programing.

After all of that, the answer was still no. I then said, I want to cancel my service and need to talk to customer retention. All of a sudden she says wait a minute, I think I found something. It says here that we have a special going on for people who need to upgrade their current receiver for 3D tv. The special is from June 4 to Jun 8th, they will upgrade you to an H21 OR HR21 at no charge. they have to email the info to the department that handles the 21receivers. She was reading this info to me.

So take it for what it's worth. Hope this info can help someone.

Good old customer retention. I thought that might still work. BTW, in today's newspaper there is a BB flyer selling the DirecTV/Samsung 3D/ESPN3D package. Available to new DTV subscribers or new 2yr re-up. Buy the package now and you get a geek(s) to come set the whole thing up and tune you into ESPNHD3D for the World Cup.--------But they can't get me a 58VT25

I had to use Customer Retention about 5 years ago and one other time. It's sad that you have to go through all of that; it's something that should be handled right on the spot. I am not out to get anything for nothing, and it really angers me that paying customers have to go through this crap!!!

This is the way I think they are handling this whole thing. The reps are being told by the powers that be when a customer asks to get upgraded to the HR21, flat out tell them they have to buy a new receiver. They are told to wait until the customer really seems like he is going to cancel service and then they pull the June 4th to June 8th Special out of the hat! After the 8th it will probably be the June 8th to June 12th Special. But you will have to talk to advance customer service which I think is another name for customer retention.

I was serious about ending my service with them and I am still thinking about it now.

I am looking forward to seeing the 3D Sports and Movies. To be honest, I would never want 3D to be the standard and hope it never comes to that. I would like to watch a Movie or Sporting event once in a while in 3D but not all the time. The whole thing for me is, they are offering it, so I want to be able to watch it if I choose too. And the big thing was that they sent a message to my TV screen stating that my receiver was updated to receive 3D?????? I think that would lead anyone to believe that they could receive the 3D signal.

We will see if I actually get the HR21; I will post back if and when I do.

Well after seeing the success of usmcss I decided to give it one more try (try #5 for those counting).
First guy I talked to I was just straight up with him, told him this was on try #5 and I just want to be able to watch 3d programming. He made me hold on for about 7 minutes, got back on the phone and he said he put in a order for me.

He credited me the $149 on the spot so no charge and the new dvr will be here in 2-5 days. If it is not the HR21 or higher he said send it back and try again. But he was pretty sure it would be.
Only thing I had to do was re-up my 2 year agreement.
Guess we will see what I get in 2-5 days!!

Also guys make sure you call and get your "free hd" for the next 24 months. That took me two tries!!
They just started that

when did you you call them i no you been trying real hard. so what day did they agree to upgrade you. also when you said make sure to get free hd for the next 24 mounths. is that for commiting to 24 mounths more? i just had them upgrade my h20 to h21. and i had to commit two 2 years more i got my reciever tuesday the 1st. had them program the reciever. so do i fall in this speacial? when did it start? thanks any imfo please have a nice day.

You need to call asap for the free hd. Looks like as of yesterday they give to all new customers free hd for life. Current customers get free hd up to 24 months.
Just depends on which csr you get. Some will say you need to sign up for auto bill pay to get the credit, and some wont. My 2nd try I got the 24 months free.
For my new HD dvr I did have to renew my two year commitment, which is no big deal.
All I wanted was 3d!
So today was finally a good day on the directv front for me. Three phone calls just today!

question on the 3d firmware upgrade on the hr21 and ups. I had the updated message on my hr20 before I received the hr21, but the hr21 has been hooked up a few days and not upgraded the software to the 3D version?

Is there a way to force the upgrade?...I thought you could hold something down during startup to get it to look for the latest version?

Thanks JayHawk, I just called today and got it taken care of. The first rep put me through to a "promotion" rep. She said she could do it but I would have to give them a credit card. I told her" I have been a customer for 12 years and have paid my bills on time since then, I don't want to pay my bill with a credit card." She said that was the only way I could do it. At this point I was so pissed off, I said "it's funny that when I call, you guys always tell me how long I have been a customer and Directv appreciates that, well apparently not if I have to call and argue about getting an upgraded receiver to watch 3Dtv and now have to fight to get what I deserve when it should have been taken care of on your end and an e-mail should have been sent telling me how much Directv loves me and is giving me HDTV free for 24 months!"

Anyway, I told her to put me through to Customer Retention. The rep answered and I told him I want to cancel my service. He asked why, I told him and he gave me the HDTV for 24months free without having to sign up for the credit card payment plan.

Why the hell do good customers have to go through this crap!!!!!!!!
